We've got news . . . chickens!

Tomato Mountain has made a foray into raising chickens. Scott, an employee who came to the farm this past summer, has extensive experience raising chickens and offered to help us do so for our farm. I've always been overwhelmed enough without the responsibility of also taking care of animals, which is quite the chore--especially to do it responsibly. Having animals around the farm improves the atmosphere and "feel" of the farm, and offers our employees varied experiences and opportunities to keep things fun and interesting.

We're in the middle of our first trial effort having purchased 100 chicks that arrived on December 6. As is standard practice, we received a few extra chicks, so we started with 104. It is expected that a few will die in the first week, so we anticipated ending up with 95 to 98 birds to make it to maturity. Currently, we have 101 birds, all of which look healthy, and that we expect to grow to around 5 pounds. This is an ideal size for most people, and is when we expect to harvest them. While these birds are not yet certified organic, we are buying organic feed, following all organic rules, and will work to organically certify our chickens come our normal inspection time, usually in mid spring.  Read more...

Winter delivery schedule. To make deliveries as efficient as possible, we'll be delivering on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the Winter Season.  This will result in a change of delivery day for about 2/3 of our customers, with the first deliveries on January 15 & 17. We'll let you know shortly when to expect yours. With the anticipated addition of a larger truck, we hope to carry this more efficient schedule into the rest of the season as well.
