Some fun new crops in the box

The coming week represents a few firsts for our CSA, either for this season or in the 20-year life of the farm.

                        Watermelon Radishes

Red meat (watermelon) radishes turn traditional red red meat radish in the ground radishes inside out. Round, and with a greenish-white skin, there's nothing about the plant from the outside that gives a hint of what's inside.  But slice it open and and you'll see the resemblance to a watermelon with the magenta-pink center. The taste is crisp and sweet, red meat radishes with a little bite at the end. Those you'll be receiving will be on the large side; you can use the whole thing to make Radish Chips or use bits of thin slices to add a colorful zing to a salad.

                     Fennel

No doubt some of you are familiar with fennel, but it's a new one for Tomato Mountain. It was slow to germinate so we weren't sure what we had gotten fennel ourselves into, but the results are pretty cool. We'll be giving you both the bulb and the spidery leaves, so you're essentially receiving both a vegetable and an herb. Fennel has a mild anise (licorice) taste and lends itself to grilling, sauteing, creaming and baking. If you have a favorite recipe for fennel, please share it via email or Facebook and I'll share it with the class on Monday.

We hope you enjoy trying out these more unusual items as part of your CSA. Let us know what you think!
