Dear Common Thread Members and Friends,
| Astrid helps to close the caterpillar tunnels and keep the peppers warm |
Planting season continues! Recently we've put in peppers, strawberries, celery, herbs, flowers, green beans and a fourth planting of beets, lettuce, spinach and broccoli. Our hoophouse and caterpillar structures are all constructed
and we'll finish planting them to tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and cukes in a day or two.
We're very glad we have those structures... after many days in the 80s recently, it went down to 26 the other night. We lost some sleep but with protective structures and row cover (doubled up in several spots) we didn't lose any plants.
We think we will have enough veggies ready to go ahead with the CSA start date of June 2 but we'll make the final call at the end of this week

and let CSA members know by email and phone at that point. We'll also be sending out emails with pick up logistics for each site.
We still have shares available! It's not too late to sign up - please email us to make sure we get you on the list asap. There are a few sites that can only run if we get several last minute shares including Norwich, UU Church of Utica, Manlius, Cicero and Camillus. We hope to try a different form of distribution at the UU Church in Utica that would allow more social interaction and vegetable flexibility but we need quite a few more shares to be able to run the distribution that way. If you are interested in joining or switching to the UU Church of Utica site, please let us know asap. If we decide we can't run a site, we'll contact the folks signed up there later this week.
Please continue to spread the word about the CSA this week - filling the CSA this season will make a big difference to the economic health of the farm. Please share or forward this email or facebook message and tell your neighbors and co-workers about the CSA.

In other exciting farm news, we were recently awarded a NYS Grant to help us purchase a much needed tillage tractor and some equipment that will improve our soil management. You can read more about the grant at https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-recipients-new-farmers-grant-fund-support-agribusiness-across-new-york
Thanks to many of our CSA members for donating toward our sponsored share program. We have been able to subsidize nine CSA shares for folks who would not otherwise be able to afford to participate in the CSA this season. We still have several folks on the waiting list for a sponsored share, so if you are interested in donating, it's not too late.
We can't wait to eat lots of fresh veggies very soon and to share them with many of you!
Yours in the Field,
Wendy and Asher
