Common Thread Farm seeks Apprentices and Seasonal Workers for 2014!
Come join us, two farmers with 18 years experience each, on our second year at Common Thread Farm and help us bring our new farm to the next level while bringing your farm training to the next level! Common Thread Farm grows vegetables using organic methods on 12 acres in Madison, NY for both on site and off site CSA members and three farmers markets. Wendy and Asher, the farmers at Common Thread, have been training apprentices for eleven years now and consider training future farmers to be one of the most rewarding things that we do.
Our apprenticeships start in March or April and run through October or mid-November. Our positions are geared towards individuals who are interested in managing a farm. The apprenticeship includes training, produce, and $8.50/hour for 40-45 hours/week for first year apprentices. We have on site housing for rent for one or two apprentices and can also help apprentices locate other housing options in the community.
Apprentices learn how the farm works from seed to distribution by participating in greenhouse seeding, transplanting, cultivation, pest control, harvesting, farmers markets, CSA distribution and more. Apprentices will have responsibilities for greenhouse management, irrigation, and other farm tasks on a rotating basis to ensure a well rounded training for all apprentices.
In addition to hands-on training in the fields, we hold weekly education sessions. Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn about soil fertility, crop rotations, business planning, budgeting, marketing, crop planning and more during on-farm workshops as well as have opportunities to take field trips to other farms.
We are also planning to hire for several other seasonal positions during the summer with some extending into the fall. We are looking for field crew members to help with harvesting, weeding and other field work as well as assistants at our farmers market booths. These positions can work well for people interested in getting involved with our organic farm without the commitment of a full season apprenticeship.
