Prayer Line
At Pope John, our school community lifts each other up in prayer during times of need. If you have a prayer request, or to join the prayer line, please email [email protected].

We are proud to announce that Brendan Jones, Hannah Krusleski, and Alan Lasater have been recognized as Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Below are your announcements for the week of September 30, 2013.
1. Raffle Tickets
Raffle tickets for the 2013-2014 school year were distributed to the students after Mass last Wednesday. This year, we are raffling off a 2014 Jeep Wrangler OR a 2014 Dodge Charger (the winner's choice) as the first prize. Second and third prizes are a $1,000 gift card and an iPad Mini, respectively. For more information, please see the informational packet that went home with the tickets.

The students this year will earn their raffle holidays and free dress holidays collectively - that is, there will be an all-school goal to reach and either all of the students or none of the students will receive the perk. We will keep the students appraised of how they are doing as the school year progresses. The first deadline is $55,000 raised by the whole school by November 19 in order to receive the first raffle holiday - the Monday after the Thanksgiving holidays.

The first raffle ticket turn in day will be Tuesday, October 1 during lunch. Students can turn in their sold tickets and money and pick up more blank tickets to sell during that time.
2. Homecoming Mums
Homecoming is October 18! Homecoming mums and garters are now on sale. You can fill out this form or pick one up in the front office and return it by October 9. For more information, you can contact yearbook advisers Gillian Kruse and Claire Hein Blanton.
3. Theology for Parents

Mr. Baker is once again having a parent's theology class this year.  The classes are held on the first Gold day of the week at 8:00 a.m. in Room 214.  This year will be a study of the Gospel of Mark.  He will be using the Catholic study guide Come and See.  You do not need to have the study guide to attend.

4. 2014 Gala
Our 2014 gala, Prom: The Retro Romance, will be held on February 8, and we are very excited for the 10th anniversary gala for the school! If you would like to volunteer to work on this amazing event, especially in the areas of item solicitation and attendance, please contact gala chair Sue Bruno at [email protected].

Those who purchase a table at the Gold Level, to go with this year's theme, will receive limo service from their home to the gala and back! If you want to arrive in style, this is the way to go! We also will be kicking off table sales with a fun contest - the first table sold will receive a special 80's themed gift basket along with their VIP table perks!

We are looking for all sorts of great items for the silent auction portion of the event. If you have an item to donate or know of a local business who does, please return this form to the Advancement office. We are especially interested in items in the men's, collegiate, beauty, and evening-out categories.
5. Counseling News

Mrs. Cox visited all tenth grade English classes last week and distributed applications for the upcoming Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) Conference. This opportunity is only open to current high school sophomores interested in representing Pope John this summer at the conference at UTMB in Galveston and developing good leadership skills. Applications are due to Mrs. Cox in the front office by Wednesday, October 23rd. Finalists will be chosen based on the strength of student essays and interviews will be held to determine a representative. A copy of the application is available online in the "Documents" section of the counseling website.

15. Cross Country News

The Cross Country team took a short trip east on Saturday morning, 9/28/13, and competed in the Houston Christian High School Meet held on the campus of the school.  The Varsity boys raced 5000 meters and were led by Seniors Cameron Guice and Alan Lasater who finished in the top quarter of racers in a very large field.  The Varsity girls raced 3200 meters and were led by Junior Emily Yoder's very impressive 4th place overall finish, the first top 5 finish for a Lion runner this season.  The JV boys and girls teams further showed that their hard work is paying off with everyone running times that improved by a 33 second average from their last official race.

Next up, we travel just down the road to The Faith West Academy meet this Saturday, 10/5/13 starting at 8:00am.  This would be a perfect opportunity to come out and cheer on our Lion runners!
