GALA ITEM OF THE WEEK
Wondering what great items we will be presenting at our gala this year? Make sure to check this space weekly for our Item of the Week!

This week's featured item is a X-day, X-night stay in a lovely 3-bedroom, 3-bath condo in Breckenridge! Just steps away from the slopes, this condo sleeps up to 10 and has all the amenities you could need for your dream ski vacation, including a private hot tub, full kitchen, and a balcony with stunning mountain views!

Make sure to come to the gala on February 9, 2013 and bid on this amazing item!
1. Raffle Tickets
We only have two ticket collection days remaining (Tuesday, January 15 and Tuesday, February 5) so make sure you get your tickets and money in, Lions! You won't want to miss out on the two spring raffle holidays!

Families will also be able to sell extra raffle tickets to go towards their family commitment credit. As of December 2012, MORE THAN 50 FAMILIES have received some credit towards their family commitment for raffle sales. For every ticket/book that is sold above the 15 that are required to receive all of the raffle holidays and incentives, the family will receive family commitment credit. For example, if you sell 20 books, you would get credit for 5 for your family commitment (or $100). If you have any questions about the raffle and family commitment, please contact Julie Koch, Gillian Kruse, or Candace Brawner, raffle chairs.
2. Pope John 5K Fun Run
Mark your calendars and put on your running shoes! The Pope John Get UP! And Glow 5K Fun Run will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 4:30 PM. A Family 1K race will start at 5:00 PM, followed by the 5K at 6:00 PM. The Get Up and GLOW 5k Fun Run supports the athletic programs at Pope John XXIII High School. Participants in this chipped evening race will run the course accessorized with glow sticks to make a visible, glowing show of how important athletics are to our school and community. Entry fees are $25 (over 10) and $15 for the Under 10 and Family 1K. Registration is available online. For information or sponsorship opportunities please contact Claire Hein Blanton, cblanton@pj23.org.
3. Aloha! Gala

Invitations have been mailed! Please be on the lookout for yours and make sure to RSVP by Jan 25th. There are several options this year on how to RSVP. Make sure to get yours in soon so you can be counted!

Silent auction items are currently being collected. The deadline for submitting your items is January 25, 2013. Donation forms can be found online or available at the front office. Any questions should be directed to our Silent Auction Chair, Ann Fontenot. Ann's contact information is as follows; ann.fontenot@earthlink.net or 832-212-5204.

Our decorating committee leaders are in need of some volunteers to help assemble table center pieces. Please contact Norma Noonan @ nnoonan1@comcast.net if you are interested in lending a hand.

There is also a need for volunteers to help set up the 2 days prior to the actual event. We will be working the day and evening of Friday, February 8th and the morning and early afternoon of February 9th. Please contact Sue Bruno at SBAloha13@gmail.com if you are interested.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to another successful event.

>> Kristi Rogers & Sue Bruno

You may underwrite a portion of the event (or solicit an area business to do so), solicit or donate an item (the amount it sells for is the amount you will receive in credit), or solicit an advertisement for the gala program. The deadlines for these are in late January to early February, so you've got some time to start working on your family commitment credit!
4. Garage Sale

The Sr. Class of 2013 is hosting a community-wide Garage Sale; we would like to invite your club, team or group to this fundraising event.

Event will be Saturday March 2nd, 2013 from 7:30 am to noon in our school gym. The cost is $30.00 for a 12X12 size booth. Booths will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Please contact me as soon as possible to reserve your booth.

We will also be inviting outside vendors to participate starting in Jan, so act fast to guarantee your spot. This is a great way to clean out your clutter and raise money for your organization.

Thank you,

5. Campus Ministry News
Pope John XXIII is very blessed have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament a couple times per month, usually on the first and third Fridays. Parent volunteers are needed to sign up to adore Christ in the Eucharist for hour time slots, allowing the students to come and go to adoration as fits their schedules. Volunteers sign up as fits their schedules throughout the year. If you would like to be on the email list of volunteers for adoration, please email Becky Neeson at atm8789@sbcglobal.net.

Just a reminder - Mass is offered in the school chapel on Mondays at 3:20 p.m. and Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m. All students, parents, and teachers are welcome to attend.
6. Electronics Recycling
Don't toss out those old cell phones, laptops, or ink cartridges! This year, Pope John is collecting used electronics, ink cartridges, and jewelry for recycling and will receive fundraising dollars for the technology department for every item donated. Bring your items to the business office and drop them off in the marked box! Every little bit helps both the school and the environment. Contact Gillian Kruse at gkruse@pj23.org for more information.
7. Fine Arts News

From the Fine ARTS DEPARTMENT teachers-

Thank you to each and every Fine Arts student and family for your generosity regarding our 17th departmental service project for the Krause Teen Center.  We delivered numerous gifts and over $600 in gift cards brought in during the Christmas Fine Arts Showcase! Our NAHS artists also designed 3 dozen wooden ornaments to go along. We will collect again at the Spring Arts Showcase! The Krause Center director was most appreciative for her teens and their needs!

We have two exciting art competitions coming up - KAA/LSAG (deadline Jan. 16) and TAPPS ART Division 4A(deadline Feb.8). Students need to check in with Ms. O'Donnell ASAP regarding categories and jurying. You need NOT be an art class student to enter. Computer-rendered art and graphic arts entries are both needed. Our PJ artists continue to do quite well in these competitions!

Congrats to Emily Gary, class of 2013, whose Christmas card art design was chosen for the annual Pope John XXIII Christmas card this year. Thank you for sharing your talents, Emily!

Personal comment from Ms. O'Donnell, art teacher - How exciting it was to see so many Pope John alumnae at the first annual Christmas get-together! Many of their artworks grace our walls today! Many fond memories of art classes and events were shared with them from over the past 9 years!
8. Volleyball News

There will be a volleyball meeting on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 3pm in the foyer of the new gym. All 2012 members of the Lady Lion volleyball program need to attend as well as anyone interested in trying out for the 2013 season.

9. Yearbook
The 2012-2013 Lion Pride Yearbook staff is hard at work completing this year's yearbook, and they need your help! We are in need of candid and staged photos from all clubs, sports, events, and just general life at Pope John! You can upload photos straight from your smartphone or computer into the yearbook's design program with ReplayIt! The Pope John password to register is letsgolions.

Senior ads for the back of the yearbook are now for sale. Honor your favorite senior with a message, photo, or blessing. Ads can be ordered with this form, turned into yearbook advisors Claire Hein Blanton or Gillian Kruse.
10. Scrips Fundraising
We have begun a new way for parents to earn their family commitment credit just by doing their everyday shopping! All purchases of gift cards from shopwithscrip.com will give a percentage of the card amount back to Pope John - half towards the club or activity of your choice, and half to your family commitment! Our next order will go through on Thursday, January 17. Call or email Ann Justus at annjsts@netzero.net.
11. Biology News
Biology class is in need of any old magazines like Nat Geo, Ranger Rick, or Big Back Yard, or other magazines that would have pictures of animals (hunting, birding & fishing too)  OR any really old reference type books that feature animals.  These will be cut up for the pictures as students work on various projects throughout the year, so the condition does not matter.  I don't need housekeeping magazines or news magazines, just animal magazines or books.  Send them to Mrs. Osterman in room 216.
12. Chick-fil-a Breakfasts
The senior class will be selling chicken breakfast biscuits from Chick-fil-a before school on Tuesdays. Make sure to support the class of 2013!
