Prayer Line
At Pope John, our school community lifts each other up in prayer during times of need. If you have a prayer request, or to join the prayer line, please email atm8789@sbcglobal.net.

We are shocked and saddened by the terrible tragedy that unfolded at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. As a Catholic school, we rely on the consolation and support of our faith and our community. GALA ITEM OF THE WEEK
Wondering what great items we will be presenting at our gala this year? Make sure to check this space weekly for our Item of the Week!

This week's featured item is a gourmet dinner for eight adults, prepared by our very own Mrs. Betsy Barry! Come to the school and Mrs. Barry will provide you with a delectable multi-course meal, served to you by the finest waiters - some lovely Pope John students! This will be a great evening out with some friends, as well as an enjoyable way to get to know a favorite teacher better!

Make sure to come to the gala on February 9, 2013 and bid on this amazing evening!
1. Raffle Tickets
We only have two ticket collection days remaining (Tuesday, January 15 and Tuesday, February 5) so make sure you get your tickets and money in, Lions! You won't want to miss out on the two spring raffle holidays!

Families will also be able to sell extra raffle tickets to go towards their family commitment credit. For every ticket/book that is sold above the 15 that are required to receive all of the raffle holidays and incentives, the family will receive family commitment credit. For example, if you sell 20 books, you would get credit for 5 for your family commitment (or $100). If you have any questions about the raffle and family commitment, please contact Julie Koch, Gillian Kruse, or Candace Brawner, raffle chairs.
2. Year-End Gift Procedures
Year-end gift procedures have been posted to the school's website. If you have not made a tax-deductible donation to Pope John in the current calendar year and would like to do so, it must be submitted to the Advancement office before December 31, 2012 to count for the current tax year.

A current list of our 2012-2013 school year annual fund donors can be found on the school's website on the Giving page. The 2011-2012 Honor Roll of Donors can also be found on the website. Thank you to everyone who supports our mission and our students - we could not be what we are without you!
3. Aloha! Gala
ALOHA!  This time has come to start with preparations for the 2013 Gala.  Now that holiday shopping is in full swing please consider picking up something to donate to the Gala and Auction.  We are ready to start taking donations!  Thank you in advance for making this a successful event!

We are looking for an assistant silent auction coordinator to work with our current Silent Auction Chair, Ann Fontenot. If you are interested in this position, or would like more information, please email Ann at ann.fontenot@earthlink.net.

You may underwrite a portion of the event (or solicit an area business to do so), solicit or donate an item (the amount it sells for is the amount you will receive in credit), or solicit an advertisement for the gala program. The deadlines for these are in late January to early February, so you've got some time to start working on your family commitment credit!
4. Garage Sale

The Sr. Class of 2013 is hosting a community-wide Garage Sale; we would like to invite your club, team or group to this fundraising event.

Event will be Saturday March 2nd, 2013 from 7:30 am to noon in our school gym. The cost is $30.00 for a 12X12 size booth. Booths will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Please contact me as soon as possible to reserve your booth.

We will also be inviting outside vendors to participate starting in Jan, so act fast to guarantee your spot. This is a great way to clean out your clutter and raise money for your organization.

5. Campus Ministry News

Freshman service hours and papers are due January 7th. Please check the information on the Campus Ministry page of the PJ website for current opportunities. There are several projects available over the upcoming holidays.

We will not be hosting Mass on Christmas Eve as we have in previous years; the diocese has requested that we cancel the service as it takes a priest away from their home parish during the busy Christmas season. We hope that everyone enjoys Mass at their home parish!

Pope John XXIII is very blessed have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament a couple times per month, usually on the first and third Fridays. Parent volunteers are needed to sign up to adore Christ in the Eucharist for hour time slots, allowing the students to come and go to adoration as fits their schedules. Volunteers sign up as fits their schedules throughout the year. If you would like to be on the email list of volunteers for adoration, please email Becky Neeson at atm8789@sbcglobal.net.

Just a reminder - Mass is offered in the school chapel on Mondays at 3:20 p.m. and Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m. All students, parents, and teachers are welcome to attend.
6. Electronics Recycling
Don't toss out those old cell phones, laptops, or ink cartridges! This year, Pope John is collecting used electronics, ink cartridges, and jewelry for recycling and will receive fundraising dollars for the technology department for every item donated. Bring your items to the business office and drop them off in the marked box! Every little bit helps both the school and the environment. Contact Gillian Kruse at gkruse@pj23.org for more information.

8. Semester Grades
Access to the gradebook portion of NetClassroom has been disabled for all students while teachers finalize grade entries and evaluate the semester exams. This portion of the website will be reactivated after Christmas once report cards are mailed. For any questions, you can contact Registrar Brenda Nitsch at bnitsch@pj23.org.
9. Yearbook
The 2012-2013 Lion Pride Yearbook staff is hard at work completing this year's yearbook, and they need your help! We are in need of candid and staged photos from all clubs, sports, events, and just general life at Pope John! You can upload photos straight from your smartphone or computer into the yearbook's design program with ReplayIt! The Pope John password to register is letsgolions.

10. Spring Break Mission Trip

Pope John is taking a mission trip to Eagle Pass, Texas over spring break with several other Houston area Catholic high schools.  The week will be filled with service and prayer. While on the mission trip, we will be primarily helping those who cannot help themselves in various ways: home repair and maintenance, vacation bible school, visits to the home bound and more. Girls will be staying at a nearby Ursuline house and the guys will be staying at the local Catholic Church.  Space is limited.  For more information contact Mr. Catalanotto at pcatalanotto@pj23.org or Mrs. Demois at sdemois@pj23.org

11. Biology News
Biology class is in need of any old magazines like Nat Geo, Ranger Rick, or Big Back Yard, or other magazines that would have pictures of animals (hunting, birding & fishing too)  OR any really old reference type books that feature animals.  These will be cut up for the pictures as students work on various projects throughout the year, so the condition does not matter.  I don't need housekeeping magazines or news magazines, just animal magazines or books.  Send them to Mrs. Osterman in room 216.
12. Chick-fil-a Breakfasts
The senior class will be selling chicken breakfast biscuits from Chick-fil-a before school on Tuesdays. Make sure to support the class of 2013!
13. Senior News
The parents of members of the class of 2013 had a very successful meeting last week! If you were unable to attend, the notes from the meeting can be found here.
14. Steps for Students

Steps for Students is an annual archdiocesan-wide event where all school and parish communities can come together as one to support Catholic education. The goal of Steps for Students is to raise awareness of the importance of a Catholic education and provide much needed resources for our Catholic Schools. This day of family fun includes a 5k USA Track and Field Association sanctioned race, the David K. Guite Memorial 1k Family Fun Run, Catholic School Parade and Post Race Party. By registering to run and joining the Pope John XXIII team you can designate your registration fee and any pledges you collect to benefit your school's team. The race this year will be on February 2, 2012. More information about the race and registration can be found at:
