Don't forget to get your five books of tickets sold by November 6 to earn the first raffle holiday (on Wednesday, November 21). For more information, email Julie Koch at jkoch8654@gmail.com.

If you were unable to attend Back to School night, please email Gillian Kruse at gkruse@pj23.org to arrange for the pickup of your 2012-2013 Student Directory.

Below are your announcements for the week of October 29, 2012.

1. Open House
We are asking for the help of our families to make this year's Open House the best ever! If you would like to donate refreshments for the evening, please bring them to the school on October 30. We have divided up the refreshments by house:

Aquinas - Fruit for fruit trays
Borromeo - Veggie sticks
Lisieux - Bottled water and/or canned soft drinks
Loreto - Cheese (boys) and crackers (girls)
Neri - Desserts

If you have any questions or would like to help in a more substantial way, please email Gillian Kruse, Ann Justus, or Brenda Nitsch.
2. Counselor's News

FOR THOSE STUDENTS PLANNING TO APPLY TO COLLEGES BY THE NOVEMBER 1st EARLY DEADLINE

Please touch base with Mr. Tesone to see which teachers have already turned your teacher recommendation letter in to him and which are still outstanding.  Teachers may not always know that you are planning to apply early so polite requests and gentle reminders from you will be much greater appreciated now as compared to the finals days leading up to November 1st.

If you have not talked to teachers about letters yet AND you are planning on applying early, you must do so ASAP in order to ensure that the letters will be completed in a reasonable amount of time.  Please see Mr. Tesone with any questions or concerns pertaining to this matter.

3. Family Commitment
The next opportunity for you to help take care of your family commitment is here! We will be producing another sports program for our winter sports (basketball, swimming, and soccer), and you may pay off your family commitment by soliciting advertisements in the program. Advertising information is due Friday, November 16, so make sure you take advantage of this extended opportunity to raise money towards your family commitment!

Families will also be able to sell extra raffle tickets to go towards their family commitment credit. For every ticket/book that is sold above the 15 that are required to receive all of the raffle holidays and incentives, the family will receive family commitment credit. For example, if you sell 20 books, you would get credit for 5 for your family commitment (or $100). If you have any questions about the raffle and family commitment, please contact Julie Koch, Gillian Kruse, or Candace Brawner, raffle chairs.
4. School Lunch
Please go to your lunch account at www.myschoolaccount.com and update your account status. Many accounts are currently overdrawn and need to have more funds placed in them. To avoid this issue in the future, you can update your settings so the service will automatically email you when your account is low on funds. Overdrawn accounts hold up the lunch lines for everyone as they require special administrative permissions to receive their lunches. Please make sure you maintain a positive balance in your account to stop this from happening in the future!

The menus for lunches will be posted on the school's website soon.
5. Campus Ministry News

It's almost Kairos time!! For all those who will be attending our Kairos V retreat in January, we will have a mandatory parent meeting Thursday, November 1 at 6:30PM. If you are unable to attend, you must contact Ms. DeMois as soon as possible.

Next Wednesday evening, we will be heading over to the Catholic Charismatic Center for an Adore night of praise & worship. See Ms. DeMois for permission forms.
6. Electronics Recycling
Don't toss out those old phones, computers, or ink cartridges! This year, Pope John is collecting used electronics, ink cartridges, and jewelry for recycling and will receive fundraising dollars for the technology department for every item donated. Bring your items to the business office and drop them off in the marked box! Every little bit helps both the school and the environment. Contact Gillian Kruse at gkruse@pj23.org for more information.
7. Kudos
The winter sports program is being worked on right now, and we have extended the deadline for kudos! If you'd like to honor your favorite basketball player, swimmer, or soccer player, you can make them a kudo in the back of the program to let them know how proud you are. Forms are available online and in the front office of the school.
8. Roar Store News
New school spirit items are being developed and should be available in the next couple of weeks. The Roar Store also offers a limited selection of school supplies such as composition and spiral notebooks, index cards, pens and pencils, binder and graph paper, as well as microwavable lunch items, snacks and drinks. Stop by and check out the Roar Store. The store is open every day before school and during lunch.
9. Football News
The Board of Directors invites everyone to join them at the last home football game of the season against Northland Christian. The Board will honor Ms. Meagen Jones with a prayer and moment of silence before the game and would love it if all of the Lion Nation helped them take part.

Also, as a reminder, the use of alcohol on campus before, during, or after athletic contests is prohibited by TAPPS.
10. Band News
The band recently received a $25,000 grant from the Madison Charitable Foundation, which will be used to purchase badly needed instruments and equipment for the marching and concert bands. For more information, or to help the band in purchasing additional equipment, you can contact director Wendy Elko.
11. Swimming Team

The PJ23 swim team kicked off the 2012-2013 season Saturday Oct 27 at the Lamar Consolidated Private School Invitational  in Rosenberg.  The girls team took first place and the boys took third - both improving on their placement from last year.

The swim team has been practicing since late September, and is progressing well, according to Coach Abbott.  "We have the largest swim team we have ever had at Pope John, and perhaps the strongest." With the girls team ready to defend last year's State Championship and looking even stronger, and the boys team looking good as well, it should be another great year for Lion swimming.

12. Chick-fil-a Breakfasts
Starting Tuesday, August 21, the senior class will be selling chicken breakfast biscuits from Chick-fil-a before school on Tuesdays. Make sure to support the class of 2013!
13. Katy Gift Market Fundraiser
The Lion Pride Band is selling tickets to the ever popular Home For The Holidays Gift Market, which will be held at the the Merrell Center in Katy November 16th - 18th. Tickets cost $6.00 each and proceeds will go towards purchasing new instruments for the band. So grab your friends and plan to shop til you drop! Contact Patti Smith at pattismith@consolidated.net.
14. ITS Food Drive

The International Thespian Society at Pope John is holding a food drive from now through Wednesday, October 31. Please bring your nonperishables up to school and support hungry families in the Katy area.

15. Volunteers Needed
We are in need of two parents who could work the chains along the sideline for our football game against Northland Christian on Friday, November 2. These volunteer hours can be counted towards any work-study requirements your family may have. To volunteer, or for more information, please email Don Lupton at dlupton@pj23.org or Coach Mills at smills@pj23.org.
