CALL FOR PAPERS Annual Conference MAFIAs Realities and Representations of Organized Crime April 24-26, 2014 JOHN D. CALANDRA ITALIAN AMERICAN INSTITUTE Queens College, City University of New York 25 West 43rd Street, 17th floor (between 5th and 6th Avenues), Manhattan The conference theme of "MAFIAs"--the first on the subject by this academic research institute--intends to cover a broad variety of manifestations of organized crime throughout the world and over time. This scholarly event seeks a comparative approach to the subject, from historical perspectives to contemporary realities. Contrasts in historical genesis, organizational templates, cultural expressions, and sociological influences will be examined. The conference is attentive to the defining features, boundaries, and ways to conceptualize organized crime, looking at it epistemologically and ontologically. The entanglements between organized crime and political and business elites, a defining feature of these illegal enterprises, form a particularly rich and complex field of inquiry. Mediated representations--from journalism to novels, from film to gaming--have contributed to the popular imaginative of organized criminal economies and cultural expressions. The manners in which organized crime have become integral to civil society, and even factors in national self-identification, bear continued and in-depth examination, as do their influences in national and international commerce. We are looking for papers that are grounded in serious academic argument both disciplinary-based and interdisciplinary. We are particularly interested in new approaches to the analysis of organized crime that draw from the social sciences and the humanities, discovering hitherto unexplored perspectives and expressions. SUGGESTED PAPER TOPICS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING: * Organized crime among diasporic communities (e.g., Russians in New York City, Nigerians in London) * Ways in which organized crime serves to reify emigrant notions of identity * Comparative discussion of organized crime in the United States (e.g., Jewish American, Irish American, Mexican American) as well as globally (e.g., Columbian Cartel, the Yakuza in Japan) * Anti-organized-crime initiatives and activists, e.g., Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino * Relationship of organized crime to global terrorism and influences in the global economy * The artistic expressions of organized crime, from "canzone di malavita" in Calabria to "narcocorridos" on the Mexico-U.S. border * Organized crime in film, television, gaming, e.g., Boardwalk Empire, "Grand Theft Auto" * Organized crime and the written word, from journalistic accounts (e.g., Roberto Saviano's Gomorrah) to memoirs by criminals and their descendants (e.g., Shoko Tendo's Yakuza Moon: Memoirs of a Gangster's Daughter) * Teaching about organized crime. The official language of the conference will be English. All presentations are to last no longer than twenty minutes, including audio and visual illustrations that accompany presentations. Thursday evening is dedicated to welcoming comments and reception; sessions and panels will take place all day Friday and Saturday. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: SEPTEMBER 16, 2013. Abstracts for scholarly papers (up to 500 words, plus a note on technical requirements) and a brief, narrative biography should be emailed as attached documents, by September 16, 2013, to calandra@qc.edu, where other inquiries may also be addressed. There are no available funds for travel, accommodations, or meals. We encourage the submission of organized panels (of no more than three presenters). Submission for a panel must be made by a single individual on behalf of the group, with all the paper titles, abstract narratives, and individual biographies. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION SEE OUR WEBSITE WWW.QC.EDU/CALANDRA.
IASA 2013 Conference Call for Papers Italian American Identity Politics New Orleans Marriott October 3-5, 2013 This year's conference examines the politics of the identifying term "Italian American" from multiple perspectives and in different time periods. The evocation of "Italian American" for political purposes and agendas has a varied history, e.g., to combat anti-Italian American discrimination, to rally allegiance to Mussolini's Fascist regime, or to support feminism. In addition to various ideological positions, the structures for conjuring and maintaining ethnic identity have also been myriad, including newspapers, the Catholic Church, commercial marketing, voluntary associations, and social media sites. What are the social conditions in which the ever-changing narratives of collective identity are formulated and perpetuated? How are ethnic symbols and practices mustered and re-invented at the service of "Italian American?" And ultimately, how do competing politics reveal and engender intragroup tensions but possibly also productive dialogue, both of which might re-configure understandings and enactments of the very term "Italian American?" Suggested paper topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Who gets to speak for Italian Americans, both within and outside of academia, political venues, cultural venues, etc.?; The use of identity politics by community leaders, the press, scholars, and others; The limitations and/or role of public policy in shaping and/or supporting Italian American identities/communities, e.g., public housing during the 1930s-1940s, suburban development during the 1950s and 1960s, the celebration of Columbus Day; The self-conscious development and use of cultural and expressive forms of ethnic identity; The co-opting of identity politics by consumerist culture, from reality television to Olive Garden commercials; Resistance to elite notions of Italian-American identity; The role of voluntary organizations in the formation of a politicized and political Italian-American collective identity; and Italian Americans as a political entity in electoral politics, in Italy's voting abroad, in relation to political activism or electoral politics in other countries with an Italian diaspora. The conference is interdisciplinary and inter-genre in its perspective and thus is open to scholars in different disciplines, creative writers (novelists, poets, and memoirists), and visual and media artists. The conference committee is open to papers not addressing this year's conference theme. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: JUNE 15, 2013. Abstracts for scholarly papers (up to 500 words, plus a note on technical requirements) and a brief, narrative biography should be emailed as attached documents, by June 15, 2013, to iasa2013conf@italianamericanstudies.net , to whom other inquiries may also be addressed. We encourage the submission of organized panels (of no more than three presenters and a chairperson). Submission for a panel must be made by a single individual on behalf of the group, with all the paper titles, abstract narratives, and individual biographies. The conference committee encourages organized panels that are interdisciplinary and inter-genre. All presentations are to last no longer than twenty minutes, including audio and visual illustrations that accompany presentations. An individual can be a paper presenter, a panel chair, a panel discussant, and a roundtable participant but cannot be any one of these more than once, eg., being a presenter and a discussant but not chairing two different panels. Individual paper and panel proposals should any audiovisual requirements (eg., computer projector). Prospective presenters may expect to be advised of their acceptance or otherwise by August 1, 2013. All presenters, respondents, and discussants must be members in good standing of the Italian American Studies Association by September 15, 2013.

"Cooking with Nonna" and Georgian Court University - A Recipe for Success Georgian Court University and Cooking with Nonna, the popular online resource and cooking show that features authentic Italian cuisine and culture, are working together to encourage healthy eating and celebrate the importance of family. Faculty and graduate students from GCU's M.A. in Holistic Health Studies program will soon provide additional health and nutrition content for www.cookingwithnonna.com, the site where host Rossella Rago focuses on Italian cooking and the extraordinary influence of Italian grandmothers, or nonne. Ms. Rago, who comes from a long line of foodies, was the 2010 winner of Food Network's "24 Hour Restaurant Battle: Battle Italiano." Cooking with Nonna, which has been in production since 2009, will draw on the university's expertise to reinterpret classic Italian recipes provided by grandmothers-many of them from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania-who appear on the show. Ultimately, holistic health is all about exploring the various dimensions of wellness, according to Sachiko Komagata, Ph.D., chair of the GCU Department of Holistic Health and Exercise Science. "Promoting health consciousness and wellness is critical to making the most of the mind-body-spirit connection. Together, GCU and Cooking with Nonna will do just that."
