Mother's Day is celebrated in 46 countries around the world - many during the month of May.   Celebrating mothers everywhere causes us to stop and reflect on our life and their contribution - and knowing that it was our mother who started our life's journey.  If we are lucky, we have that love as we grow to support us in life's challenges.  Many times we take that gift for granted.  Than later, when we are older, we begin to appreciate all that was required to be a mother.  And if we are lucky we get to be one.  Only then do we begin to understand what it means to love unconditionally, to feel the pain of our children and the joy for when they are happy and successful.

There are many famous mothers in history:

  • Marie Curie - the only woman Nobel Prize recipient with Nobel Prizes in two fields; andthe mother of Irne Joliot-Curie, also a Nobel Prize recipient
  • Mother Teresa - who guided so many through poverty
  • Jaqueline Kennedy  - the strong mother and widow of President John F Kennedy
  • Granma Moses - who at the age of 70 became a famous painter
  • "Mother Hale" Clara McBride Hale - started Hale House in Harlem to care for infants born to drug-addicted mothers

When I was working with parents and teens at risk in early 2000, I had the privilege of guiding parents on their journey of change in the relationship they had with their children.  As a tribute to my mother, I would read the book The Giving Tree by Shel Siverstein that started with "Once there was a tree and she loved a little boy...." This is the story of unconditional love and it speaks so powerfully of a mother's willingness to give to her little boy all through his life so that he could be happy.

My mother is gone now and yet this Sunday, I will spend time with her in spirit, in her garden, being thankful for the legacy she left and the gratitude that I still hold for all she gave me.

We can never choose our mothers, but for most of us - we would not have any other.  However you choose to celebrate Mother's Day, be grateful - you would not be here without her participation and commitment.

Happy Mother's Day !!

Warmest wishes,

Barbara
