Coaching the Multi-Generational Workforce | |
Question: How many of you have been to a workshop or lecture regarding the generation gap? The gender gap? The cultural gap? Today's work environment requires more than ever that we understand and adapt to diversity and differences in the workplace in order to achieve shared goals. However, how does one navigate around different perspectives and values to avoid a "clash and crash"?
A difference in perspective and values are easy to see when you take a look at generational gaps. The world is much different today than it was 70 years ago and there are obvious shifts in values, opinions and viewpoints that are showing up in today's workforce. Managers now have the task of coaching past these differences and must learn how to do so if they expect their organizations to succeed.
Years ago I was interviewed by Business Inc. on to how to coach Baby Boomers to bridge the generational gap between themselves and Generation X. Now Generation X is asking the same questions about the Millenniums - How can we work with this new generation is a constructive way to accomplish our shared goals? The Generation Xers are now middle aged, and entering their prime earning years, moving into upper management positions. Whereas the Millenniums are the youngest generation stepping into the workforce introducing a 24/7 "connected" mindset.
We Boomers are at the brink of the elder years, rapidly aging, still working and saving money for retirement - myself the exception of course! This makes for three generations trying to work together within the workplace. To fully understand the different perspectives of each generation, here is a breakdown of significant events within each generation's lives that helped shape and define how they choose to live:
- Traditionalist Born before 1945, Pearl Harbor
- Boomers JFK, Bobby Kennedy, MLK Jr. Assignations
- Generations X Watergate and the Challenger Explosion
- Millennium 9/11
Each generation has its own view on life and priorities. The traditionalists were exposed to harsh political and economic times resulting in a need for security but always stood by the value of "Do the Right Thing!" The Boomers made their work a defining part of their lives and lived to work and many still do. Influenced by the Boomer's "live to work" philosophy, Generation X sparked a "work to live mantra". They are comfortable with change and have an entrepreneur spirit, having started almost 70% of all new business in the U.S. The Millenniums were raised during the "empowerment years" with constant praise, the belief that everyone is a winner, and are not afraid to express opinions. They flourish in a team environment, and are in a constant state of multitasking and being "connected".
Diversity is becoming more important to all of us as the world gets "flatter and smaller"; 24/7 connections are now the norm and the opportunity to have an opinion about anything any time is possible. The Millenniums have embraced diversity and do not see conflict in the same ways that previous generations have.
So, how do leaders in business coach to avoid the clash and crash?
- Remember . . . everyone has a positive intention and their own perspective.
- Look at the different generations and acknowledge what motivates them.
- Boomers -"Get it done"
- Generation Xers - "Invent it"
- Millenniums - "Do it with high value and real time"
- As in any diverse environment - education and understanding is important. Don't make assumptions, check it out, and get to know what each person's real thoughts are and what motivated them.
- Speak so that they know "What's in it for me?" We all want to see our contribution in a project and with others.
- Recognize when it is good to slow down, know when to give it some time and when it is time to get in motion with a "get it done attitude".
- Stop spending time defending your point of view - make it the number 1 priority to understand another point of view. Two perspectives are always better than one.
Bottom line, just remember that each of us will ultimately move through life richer when we appreciate each other and one day we will all look at the next generation with the same level of confusion and ask "WHAT's THAT??" And the beat goes on . . .
