Tiburon Baptist Church is a family of faith in Jesus Christ committed to vital worship and personal devotion that finds expression in ministry and missions.
Farewell to Beth Singleton and John Shouse

Respectively on Sept. 6th and 13th, our church bid a fond farewell to our beloved Minister of Music, Beth Singleton, and our beloved Lead Pastor, Dr. John Shouse. The church celebrated what God has done through them with a special time of music, sharing of memories, and presentation of gifts. It is with mixed emotions that we watch our longtime pastors and friends move away into the next chapter of their lives. We will, of course, greatly miss them and their wonderful spouses and partners in ministry (Dr. Craig Singleton and Stephanie Shouse). And we praise God for allowing us the time we had with them and for His leading them into a new calling in ministry and life. Let us all continue to pray for God's richest blessings and guidance for them. We love you, Beth & Craig and John & Stephanie, and look forward to when our paths will cross again.

Youth Ministry: A faith that sticks

"I just don't believe the same things that you do anymore," said 18 year old Tom, sitting across from me. "I just can't believe you Christians run around pointing out each other's faults."
"So what do you believe?" I asked.
"String Theory. If there is a God, he is just a higher extra-dimensional being," responded Tom. I sat there stunned as Tom described an impersonal being whom he had created in his own image. Tom had been a regular member of our youth group since the age of 13. He was well-versed in the Bible but alcoholic parents and emotional brokenness had taken its toll. He could give you the right answers but his faith hadn't penetrated his heart. My heart was broken by the plight of this young man. In discipling a young person it is my hope to impart a faith that sticks.

In 2007, the Fuller Youth Institute combined the data of four separate research initiatives, and their findings were published in a book called Sticky Faith by Dr. Kara E. Powell and Dr. Chap Clark. Although the book has a lot to say, the biggest takeaway for me is the importance of relationships in the identity and faith formation of a young person. In gauging high school students who keep their faith through college, the study concluded that these young people had at least five "heart relationships" with quality Christian adults. Young people experience Jesus when adults in the church give them grace, time, and genuine love with no hidden agenda. Sticky Faith admonishes its readers to intentionally form a web of sticky relationships. One thing I love about Tiburon Baptist Church is that we are an inter-generational "family of faith."  As Christians we have a responsibility to be involved in each other's lives, and our young people crave it. With your help we can impart a faith to them that sticks.

Interim Lead Pastor: Don Dent

Praise God for His goodness and faithfulness! Dr. Don Dent answered the Lord's call to be our Interim Lead Pastor. The church voted and unanimously affirmed Pastor Don's call on Sept. 9th, and he began as Interim Lead Pastor on Sept. 14th. One of his first acts in office was to draft a document entitled Ten Amazing Assets for our Future; please take the time to read it.

Pastor Don currently leads Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary's intercultural studies and mission preparation program. He is a native of Mississippi, and worked in large Asian cities for thirty years. His cross-cultural experience includes time in a variety of cultural environments, including Buddhist, Muslim, and Hindu. Pastor Don worked for the IMB and later led a training team for an international corporation. He has developed communities in urban high-rises, created strategies for penetrating new markets, provided leadership for a hundred expatriate teams, developed leaders, and overseen the on-boarding process for new corporate personnel.

Since Pastor Don's college days, his wife, Anne, has been the love of his life. Together they have two children. Both their daughter, Chesed, and their son, Rob, are wonderful servants in a variety of Christian ministries.
TBC Kids Ministry

On Sept. 13th, the church began a brand new format and curriculum for our Children's Ministry's Sunday School hour. The new curriculum is called The Gospel Project and it systematically takes our kids through the entire Bible (from Genesis to Revelation) and shows them that God's Word is not just a random collection of stories but one unified story - God's story of redemption.

The Children's Ministry also moved entirely to a central location downstairs near the Fellowship Hall. Now all of our children (from birth through 5th Grade) meet downstairs. A new space for parents to check-in their kids is also located in the Fellowship Hall. So, parents, please bring your kids to the check-in station and someone will lead them to their new classrooms.

The Children's Ministry could really use your help! Please prayerfully consider serving in our Children's Ministry where all types of skills and personalities are needed. You don't necessarily need to work with kids; if you have an interest in music, teaching, crafts, or being a greeter, please contact Pastor Brice right away at brice@tiburonbaptist.org.

There are still plenty of opportunities to serve in our Preschool Ministry as well. The Preschool Ministry Schedule of Servants can be found on the church's website. Please sign-up there to invest your time and love with God's precious children!
Home Bible Study: Surprised by Hope

On Sept. 20th, our church started our Fall Home Bible Study series. The 6-week series, Surprised by Hope, is authored by N.T. Wright and looks afresh at the biblical concepts of heaven, resurrection, and the mission of the church. We pray that, through God's Word and the formation of lasting relationships, we will gain an exciting new vision of God's final new creation and how it can transform our lives and bring hope to our community right now! A total of 9 groups were formed with nearly 80 participants that represent a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and generations.
Lead Pastor Search Committee:
Questionnaire results and seeking nominations

On Sept. 27th, the Lead Pastor Search Committee presented the results from their questionnaire. The full presentation can be found on the church's website. The website also contains a form for submitting nominations for our new Lead Pastor. If you have any questions or comments for the Lead Pastor Search Committee, you may email them at lpsc.tbc@gmail.com. We are so grateful for the dedicated work and many hours given by this committee: Ken Burns, Andrew Gillmer, Eric Kwok (Chair), Jay Liu, and Martha Saul. Please continue to lift them and our church up in prayer.
New Deacons

On Oct. 4th, the church commissioned six new deacons. These include Jeannie Bader, Charles Kvanvig, Lenora Kwok, Gilda Stabler, Alice Torres, and Nadine Watts. Please continue to pray for these and the entire deacon ministry as they extend loving care to and fervent prayer for our church family.
Stewardship Committee: Commitment cards needed!

Your Stewardship Committee is working hard to form the 2016 Budget for our church. In order to do this, though, they need to have everyone prayerfully submit a stewardship commitment card for 2016. These commitment cards are crucial in helping the committee to accurately determine our budget and be faithful stewards of God's blessings and resources. Your commitment card is held in the strictest confidentiality - we respect that it is a very personal decision between you and God.

If you have not already done so, please help the committee (and our church overall) by turning in a commitment card as soon as possible. You may place your commitment card in the offering plate during the Sunday worship services, or mail or hand them to Pashia Greene at the front office, or hand them to Stephen Aoki. If you need a commitment card, you may download one from the church's website or pick one up at the church.
California Mission Offering

Praise the Lord for your faithful support for the California Mission Offering (CMO)! We have raised $2,060 for this offering - more than twice our goal of $1,000. Your gifts to the CMO support church planting, evangelism, church health, disaster relief, and prayer in California. Follow this link to learn more about the CMO and how the funds are used for God's glory.

The Music Minister Search Committee is pleased to present a candidate for our new Minister of Music. Please be here on Oct. 11th at 5:00 p.m. to meet Steve Howell and his family. And then members of the church will have the opportunity to vote on Steve Howell during both worship services on Oct. 18th.

We praise the Lord for the wonderful work put forth by our Music Minister Search Committee: Ray Jackson, Jennifer Gillmer (Co-Chair), Judy Good, Leslie McCarty (Co-Chair), Amanda McCormick, and Morgan Patterson. We are also extremely grateful to God for Barbara Dabney, Susie Erin, Jennifer Gillmer, Christian Lopez, Leslie McCarty, Amanda McCormick, Ian Fraser-Thomson, and other special guest musicians who have given their talents to lead us in worship during this interim period. Please pray in earnest for Steve Howell and his family and for our church so that we may all seek God's perfect will for this important decision.

Dennis Pratt is being presented for ordination to the Christian ministry. Members of the church are invited to participate in this important process. Dennis will give a short testimony on Oct. 11th during the worship services. He will then present the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the Prayer Meeting on Oct. 14th at 6:30 p.m. The Ordination Council will meet on Oct. 25th at 2:00 p.m. And an ordination service is scheduled for Nov. 15th at 5:00 p.m. Please pray for Dennis and his wife, Barbara, as they seek God's call for their lives.
Evangelism Event: Trunk or Treat on Oct. 31st

TBC will host a Trunk or Treat event on Oct. 31st from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. This is a family-friendly and safe way for kids to enjoy Halloween as well as a great opportunity to engage our community. Be sure to invite your friends, co-workers, neighbors, and classmates.

Here's how it works. A section of our parking lot will be set up with cars, food, and games. Folks from TBC will decorate the trunk of their cars with fun and non-scary themes. Kids will move from trunk to trunk and collect a prize, play a game, or receive a treat from each car. There will be lots of other activities for the whole family to enjoy!

There are many ways to help! Stop by the informational table at church for more information.
  1. We need people to decorate their cars
  2. We need people to help with other games, food, decorations, and more
  3. We need people to donate candy/treats or other small prizes for the event
If have questions, please see Pastor Brice (brice@tiburonbaptist.org) or Michelle Parsley.
