Tiburon Baptist Church

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter
Let us reflect upon a devotion about the strength of the Lord from Dr. Lloyd John Ogilvie, which is drawn from Ogilvie's book entitled Silent Strength for My Life (Eugene, OR: Harvest House Press, 1990).

The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you in His love, He will rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17).

Silent Strength

Strength is an inside secret. It comes from the Lord's Spirit in
the well of our inner being. Because His strength is limitless, our wells need never be empty. His strength is constantly surging up to give us exactly what we need in every moment. His strength gives us supernatural thinking power beyond our IQ, it provides emotional equipoise when under pressure, it engenders resoluteness in our wills and vision for our imaginations, and it energizes our bodies with physical resiliency.

Zephaniah gives the secret of lasting strength. It is received in silent receptive communion with the Lord: "Be silent in the presence of the Lord God" (Zephaniah 1:7). What we discover in our silence becomes the source of our strength. Note the glorious progression in our verse today. First, the Lord rejoices over us with gladness. In spite of our failures, He has chosen to be our God and to cherish us. Think of it! God and all the company of heaven are rejoicing over us! This gives us the confidence of silent strength. We belong to God - He's redeemed us in Christ and placed His Spirit in us. He'll never give up on us.

Alone with Him, next the Lord quiets us with His love. The unqualified, indefatigable love of the Lord gives us silent confidence, security, and peace. There's no need to prove ourselves or blow our own horns. We can live with calm, winsome joy. And knowing that the Lord rejoices over us frees us to rejoice in Him. The Hebrew word for "rejoice" means "to spin around." Our hearts pirouette with praise as we hear God's song, more profound than audio sound: "This is My beloved person in whom I am pleased." Have you heard the song of silent strength?
Pastor Search Committee
The Pastor Search Committee has been meeting regularly since its formation. We feel very strongly the search process must be covered in prayer to seek God's will for Tiburon Baptist Church. To this end, a prayer guide has been developed to help everyone know how to pray for this endeavor. The guide was distributed at the Sunday worship services and incorporated into the prayer time during the services throughout the month of July.

In addition, the committee will be distributing a questionnaire to help us learn, with your input, what God is saying to us and what path Tiburon Baptist Church should follow to fulfill His purposes. God speaks to all of us, so please answer the questions thoughtfully after reading and praying through the prayer guide.

Our church will be facing many hurdles as we prepare for a new staff and also the departure of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary next year. This is God's challenge to us to remain faithful and obedient to His Word.

From the prayer guide:
According to E.M. Bounds, "What the church needs today is not more machinery or better, not new organization or more and novel methods, but people whom the Holy Spirit can use ---- people of prayer, people mighty in prayer."

New Interim Youth Minister
On June 14th, Chris Harrold was elected to be the church's Interim Youth Minster. We praise God for Chris and ask that you continue to pray for Chris and our youth group as they begin this new journey together.

Here is how Chris describes himself: I am a home-grown Bay area resident who can be described as being introspective, cooperative, informative, compassionate, and empathetic. In 2009 I graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English: Creative Writing and, in 2015, from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity with an emphasis in youth ministry. I have been able to do mission work in Hungary, the Philippines, and have co-led multiple trips of teenagers to Mexico. I have been ministering to young people for over 10 years. My passion is building mentoring relationships with students and seeing God work through them. I enjoy reading, writing, backpacking, board games, video games, comic books, and other nerdy endeavors. Secretly I am athletic but don't tell anyone.
Tyler Sanders
On July 26th, our church said a fond farewell to our former Youth Minister, Tyler Sanders. Tyler served faithfully with our youth group for over 3 years and as the Interim Youth Minister since November of 2014. Tyler and his new wife, Hannah, have moved to Southern California to begin a new ministry opportunity with Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. The church is grateful to God for Tyler and the time that God gave to us with him.
Beth Singleton Announces Retirement
Beth Singleton
On July 26th, Beth Singleton, our Minister of Music for over 30 years, announced her retirement. Words alone cannot express the deep and enduring love that we feel for Beth and all with which God has blessed us through her. We dearly love you, Beth, and have hearts full of joy, gratitude, and worship to God because of you. Beth's last Sunday with us will be on September 6th. Please be in prayer for Beth and her husband, Craig, as they move into the next season of their lives. Below is the letter that Beth read to the church on July 26th.

Dear Tiburon Family,

For 30 years we have worshiped together; we have served together, we have prayed for one another, we have gone on mission together, and we have reached out to our community with the Gospel. It has been a wonderful 30 years of being family together. You have seen our boys grow up into young men, and have interceded over and over again for Will from the time he was born until now. Craig and I are so grateful to have served alongside you here at Tiburon for these many years.

But I have come to feel over these last several months, that it is time to end my service with you. I have had the blessing of serving with two of the best pastors anyone could ever pray for: Pastor Barry and Pastor John. Both of them have given unwavering support of the music ministry and are truly brothers in the Lord. I am so grateful to have served over these years with both of them.

With the church searching for a new pastor, I have sensed that  it is time to retire and begin a new season of life. My last Sunday as your Minister of Music will be September 6.

Thank you for your love, your prayer, your encouragement and your support over these years. I am especially grateful to the choir for their commitment and faithfulness to the worship of God, and the seriousness with which they have taken their responsibility. Our worship together have been some of the holiest moments of my life.

Craig and I will always love you, pray for you, and be grateful to God for the years of ministry we have shared together.

In Christ,
Beth Singleton
Deacon Nominations

We move into that time of year when God calls out people from our membership to serve our church and our Lord as deacons. Our membership will begin the process by nominating persons to serve as new deacons. The Deacon Nominating Committee will consider your nominations. That committee will bring their recommendation back to the church for approval.

Deacons at TBC are servants. Our deacons are responsible for the spiritual health and well being of our church family. The deacons of TBC minister primarily through the Family Ministry Plan and assisting with baptism and the Lord's Supper.

We are currently praying that we will add up to 10 new deacons for the coming year to join our current deacon group. Please pray about the process and nominate those people that God lays on your heart. Those elected by the church will begin a three-year term beginning October 5th. Please be in prayer for the calling of new deacons to serve in this very important ministry.

Summer Picnic at Hoog Park - Aug. 22nd
The annual summer picnic is Saturday, August 22nd, beginning at 11:00 AM. It will be held at the same spot as last year: Josef Hoog Park, located at 558 Marin Oaks Drive in Novato. Please come early to help set up! The church will provide the meat and drinks and you are asked to sign-up to provide a salad or dessert. Sign-up sheets will be available at the church. Be sure to bring a lawn chair or mat to sit on and don't forget your sunscreen. This is also a wonderful event to invite a friend or two. If you have any questions, please contact Anne Comfort. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
Promotion Sunday - Aug. 23rd
jumping_schoolkids.jpg
The church will hold its Promotion Sunday on August 23rd. This is a time when the children move into their respective new Sunday School classes. In particular, we will celebrate those who are moving from the Preschool Ministry to the Children's Ministry, and those who are moving from the Children's Ministry to the Youth Ministry. If you have any questions, please see Pastor Brice or Stephen Aoki.
Family Camp at Mt. Hermon
Mt. Hermon
Labor Day weekend is rapidly approaching and it will soon be time for TBC families to enjoy a blessed time at Mt. Hermon Family Camp! Here is more information about Mt. Hermon Christian Camps. If you are registered for the camp or interested in going, please see Pastor Brice right away.
Wednesday Activities Resume on Sept. 9th
fellowship dinner
Please plan to be a part of the church's Wednesday activities which will resume on September 9th. Come join us for dinner and fellowship at 5:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. There will also be activities for children and youth as well as our prayer meeting at 6:30 PM.
Family Meeting & Potluck - Sept. 13th
Join us on September 13th at 5:30 PM for our quarterly potluck meal before we consider the current business affairs of the church. This is a great time of fellowship and an opportunity to see exactly how the church functions. As a member, you can make your voice count and have the privilege to vote on important issues. Please make plans on being there with your favorite dish.
Home Bible Study begins on Sept. 20th
Beginning on September 20th, the church will offer N.T. Wright's
Surprised by Hope for its Home Bible Study series. Award-winning author N.T. Wright outlines the present confusion about a Christian's future hope and shows how it is deeply intertwined with how we live today. Wright, who is one of today's premier Bible scholars, asserts that Christianity's most distinctive idea is bodily resurrection. He provides a magisterial defense for a literal resurrection of Jesus and shows how this became the cornerstone for the Christian community's hope in the bodily resurrection of all people at the end of the age.

We encourage everyone to either host a group in your home or join a group and engage in this thought-provoking study. We are looking for those who want to host and/or lead a group. If you are interested in doing so, please contact Stephen Aoki right away.

Word of Encouragement

But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Wisdom

God's whole purpose is to bring us to the point where He can walk with us quietly, calmly & constantly, leaving us space to grow to be His (often fumbling) co-laborers.
