Tiburon Baptist Church

June/July 2015

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter
Today, we share some thoughts from John Ambra, Director of Development for GuideStone Financial Resources and the director of Mission:Dignity. It prompts us to think about what we are and are not doing with our hands.
---------------------------------------------

Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas is known as one of the top medical facilities in the country. In the lobby of its Truett Hospital building there is a fascinating display of over 100 bronzed hands. This is the work of Dr. Adriann Flatt who is the former chief of orthopedic surgery at the hospital and a professor who specialized in anatomy and hand surgery. In 1962, Dr. Flatt began a hobby of creating plaster molds of hands which he later cast in bronze. At first, he focused on surgeons' hands to show the diversity of physical features among doctors. But later, Dr. Flatt's work expanded to include famous people like Walt Disney, Louis Armstrong, Dr. Suess, Winston Churchill, and Dwight Eisenhower.

Seeing this exhibit not only evokes memories of well-known persons but also causes you to think about the incredible gift of your own hands. At the end of your arms and mine are God-given tools that can cut mighty trees one day and perform intricate work the next. We cradle children and grandchildren with our hands but also use them to protect ourselves from danger. We can hurt, heal, build up, or tear down.

If we need assistance, we ask if someone can lend us a hand. In honoring an individual, we often are encouraged to give them a hand of applause. Some hands are soft while others are rough and work-worn. Either way, or hands are magnificent instruments for a multitude of purposes.

One of the ways we use our hands is to help others in need. In remembering the virtues of a godly woman, the writer of Proverbs 31 noted, "She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy." That's not just a noble quality for women but for all of us who are part of God's family.

May God multiply the blessings from the work of your hands and pour His favor out on you as you touch the lives of others.

Pastor Search Committee Formed
On May 3rd, TBC voted to select a pastor search committee to begin the process of discovering our next lead pastor. The members of this committee are: Eric Kwok (chair), Ken Burns, Andrew Gillmer, Jay Liu, and Martha Saul. We ask that you please continue praying especially for these people and for this important process in the life of God's church here in Tiburon.
"To infinity and beyond"
- Buzz Lightyear, Toy Story (1995)
On May 31st our church family celebrated the amazing work that God has done through Pastor Glenn & Mrs. Janet Prescott. We thank God for blessing us and our community with 12 years of faithful service on the TBC staff, friendship, and fathomless love from our dear Executive Pastor, his lovely wife, and their wonderful children and grandchildren. Pastor Glenn will continue in ministry at his new position as the Director of Theological Field Education and Internships at the Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Please continue to pray for the entire Prescott family as they make the many transitions to a new journey in their life.

Pastor Glenn usually attaches movie quotations to the closing of his emails. And so we would like to send him off with the fitting quote above from the movie Toy Story (1995), because this encapsulates one of Pastor Glenn's lasting sentiments: what matters most are the things that have eternal significance in God's kingdom. We wish them well and fondly look forward to when our paths will cross again here in this life, into infinity, and beyond.
Interim Executive Pastor
On June 1st, Stephen Aoki began his new role as the Interim Executive Pastor. Following the recommendation of the search committee, the congregational vote affirmed to call Stephen to the position on May 17th. Stephen is currently the Minister to Children and has served at TBC in a number of capacities. A graduate of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, Stephen also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Hawai'i and has a background in banking and office management. He and his wife, Pauline, and their two children, Melanny and Cory, live in Mill Valley and are excited to see God at work through this opportunity.

FTWFU mission: June 28th - July 3rd
As we gear up for our third summer of Feed Those Who Feed US (FTWFU), it is our prayer that you will plan to join us for a wonderful week of ministry with the migrant farm workers living in Davis from June 28th to July 3rd. There are lots of needs from helping with Bible & sports camp, crafts, music, the eye clinic, clothes & food sorting, clothes & food distribution, the medical clinic, and the week-ending BBQ and evangelistic service. We hope you will set aside part or all to join us. There is a table in the church gallery with more information and many opportunities to serve.

Contact Jennifer Adams and let her know of your plans to participate. We will put you on one of the teams of your choice.

Mission:Dignity emphasis on June 28th
Many retired Southern Baptist ministers, workers, and widows who have faithfully served God's people now find themselves struggling to meet even basic needs. Many served small, rural churches that paid only modest salaries and couldn't afford to contribute to their pastors' retirement. Often, these servants had to work extra jobs just to make ends meet.

Mission:Dignity currently helps almost 2,000 people with extra money needed for housing, food and vital medications. It has also ensured a well-deserved dignity, independence and, often, the ability to continue serving.

On Sunday, June 28 you can join others across the nation to support those who rely on Mission:Dignity.

Children's Camp at Cazadero:
July 19th - 23rd
Are your 3rd through 6th graders signed up for Children's Camp? It's July 19-23 at Camp Cazadero. Our kids will experience four nights of sleep-away camp in the Redwoods with opportunities to develop talents in the arts and sports while growing in faith.

The cost is $225/camper and you can register by clicking here. Camp Caz is located near Guerneville on the Russian River in Sonoma County about 90 minutes from Southern Marin. Contact Pastor Brice to learn more.

Youth Adventure Week: July 26th - 31st
The TBC Youth Group will be heading to Lake Tahoe for a week of adventure and exploration in God's creation and in Scripture! There will be trail hikes, paddle boards, ropes courses, and swimming at the lake. This event is open to all TBC Youth, who may also bring a friend. Please contact Tyler Sanders, Michelle Parsley, or Andrew & Jennifer Gillmer for more information.
Mission Team to the Horn of Africa
Please pray for a mission team from TBC who will be traveling to the Horn of Africa at the end of July. God is doing incredible things through the missionaries throughout the world, and also in the lives of our TBC family members who have answered in obedience to God's call to join them in the international field. Here is a prayer thread at the International Mission Board website that focuses on the Horn of Africa. Continue to lift these requests and our team up in prayer as they experience God on this mission.

Wisdom

God's whole purpose is to bring us to the point where he can walk with us quietly, calmly & constantly, leaving us space to grow to be his (often fumbling) colaborers.
