The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

Today, we share some thoughts from Dr. Russell Moore, President of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the SBC, in his Reflections from the Supreme Court Sidewalk.

I walked this morning with two of my ERLC colleagues from our office around the corner to the Supreme Court building. The scene there was circus-like. Rainbow flags were waving, as protesters on either side lifted aloft contesting signs. A man screamed through a megaphone about how "God hates queers" right next to men in stiletto heels and nun's habits. The whole scene drove me to pray, and almost to tears.

I am a conscientious dissenter from the Sexual Revolution. I don't think the Court should redefine marriage, because I don't think the Court invented marriage in the first place. The action of finding some illusory Fourteenth Amendment right to same-sex marriage in the Constitution will have deep and wide consequences, for the stability of families and for freedom of religion. I hope the Court does the right thing. Even so, the scene at the Court reminded me that, as important as the legal questions are, there are even more important issues still.

As I was standing on the sidewalk, the man next to me was painted in garish makeup, wearing a dress. He, too, was talking to a reporter. He and another man in a dress were carrying signs for "Marriage Equality Now." I overheard him call the reporter "ma'am," and then quickly apologized. "I don't mean to make you feel old," he said. "I was just raised to call everybody 'sir' and 'ma'am.' I'm from northern Alabama."

Over this man's voice was another man, on a megaphone, screaming about how God would delight in sending the "sodomites" to hell. "And don't expect me to cry for you!" the man with the megaphone bellowed.

I can't get that scene out of my mind. On the one hand, here is someone from the Bible Belt, maybe even one who grew up in an evangelical church, who is in touch enough with his roots to know how to speak to his elders, but estranged enough from the gospel to be far away from the old paths. On the other side is a man with a megaphone, who knows what the Bible teaches about morality, but who does not know what the Bible teaches about the gospel.

If we are going to be a gospel people, however the Supreme Court decides, we cannot hate the people who disagree with us. We cannot give up on the power of the gospel to change minds and to regenerate hearts. We also cannot fear the Sexual Revolutionaries so much that we capitulate on the truth of the only gospel that can save them, and us. The gospel is a call to repentance, and we must stand on that, but it is also a call to mercy for all those who repent.

We then must have enough confidence in our gospel to stand with conviction, even when the world thinks we're crazy. And we must have enough confidence in our gospel to stand with kindness toward those who disagree with us. God loves the world. Jesus saves sinners. No one will enter the kingdom of God who does not repent of sexual immorality (1 Cor. 6:9-10). But God takes no delight in the exile of the lost. He has sent us not to condemn the world but to point the world to a curse-bearing, sin-canceling Christ. Our good news is only good if it's true, and that means telling the truth about the Judgment Seat. And our good news is only good if it speaks with an invitation to life for all who repent and believe.

Let's stand with the ancient truth of God's word-about marriage and sexuality and everything else. And let's stand with the truth of God's word-that Jesus delights in saving sinners, any sinners who will come. Let's speak that gospel to the men in the dresses and to the men with the megaphones, and everyone in between.

Pastor Search Committee Formed
On May 3rd, TBC voted to select a pastor search committee to begin the process of discovering our next lead pastor. At publication time, the members of the committee had not been determined, but will be announced as soon as the group is final. We ask for you to begin praying for this important process in the life of our church.
Women's Spring Tea
Our ladies will gather for their annual Spring Tea at TBC on Saturday, May 16, from 1-3 pm. The guest speaker for this year's event will be Ida Times. We are also sponsoring a gift basket collection for the families in which Ida now works. Stop by the sign-up table in the Gallery and select a gift from the tree. These gift baskets will be presented to Ida at the Tea.
Spring Music Festival
Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 17th, at 5 pm and make sure you are present for our spring musical offerings from all of our musicians from preschool through adults. This will include all choirs including the hand bells groups. This is a wonderful opportunity to invite friends who also have young children to see what our music program has to offer for them.
Pastor Glenn's Last Sunday at TBC
You are invited to join us for a celebration on Sunday, May 31, at 12:30 pm honoring Pastor Glenn and Janet for their eleven years and ten months on our ministry staff. We will have an old fashion BBQ with fun & fellowship for all. He will also be preaching that day. We hope you will be able to join us as we say goodbye to the Prescott family.
FTWFU Fiesta & Training
We hope you are making plans to be a part of this year's event at the Migrant Farm Center in Davis. In final preparation for our week, we will have dinner together and some evangelism training provided by Joel & Melissa Williams from the IMB. Join us for dinner & training on Sunday, June 14, beginning at 4:30 pm. We want the entire FTWFU team to be present for this final countdown for our special week.
Youth Happenings!
The Youth Pastor search continues
and is in the interviewing stage, but the big news relates to our current youth pastor Tyler Sanders. His marriage to Hannah will take place in Hawaii on June 26th. Congrats to Tyler & Hannah! Woo Hoo!
Kid's Sports Camp Volunteers Needed
Each summer over 200 kids participate in this week of camp (June 22-26) and between 20 and 30 campers will make their profession of faith in Jesus during this week. Your help is needed more than ever this year!

The college team that has helped the past two years cannot come this summer. We are looking for small group leaders who are known as assistant coaches. There are other ways you can serve also. Don't' let the name fool you! You don't have to be a sports enthusiast to make a big impact. You do need a love for Jesus and a willingness to work with children.

This Sunday more information will be shared. Would you pray about how God might lead you to be involved this year? Please contact Pastor Brice to learn more.

Are your kids signed up for Sports Camp? If not, click here.
Children's Camp at Cazadero
Are your 3rd through 6th graders signed up for Children's Camp? It's July 19-23 at Camp Cazadero. Our kids will experience four nights of sleep-away camp in the Redwoods with opportunities to develop talents in the arts and sports while growing in faith.

The cost is $225/camper and you can register by clicking here. Camp Caz is located near Guerneville on the Russian River in Sonoma County about 90 minutes from Southern Marin. Contact Pastor Brice to learn more.

BGR Responds to Earthquake in Nepal
By now you are aware of the devastation that took place as a result of the earthquake in Nepal. Thousands have died and the infrastructure is in ruins. Southern Baptists are on the ground assisting in the clean-up and helping people put their lives back together. You can be a part of that support through Baptist Global Response. 100% of the money you give goes to support the people of Nepal. If you want to donate, click here.
Susan's Windmill is Pumping Water
We give thanks to God for his gracious provision of both the clean water from this well and for the Living Water that is shared by the faithful servants who have made this well possible. Thanks for your generous support! Pray for the team that will be a part of the dedication service this summer.
What The Avengers Says about Family
Also from Russell Moore. On Friday, I kept my promise to take my little flock of sons to see the movie they've been waiting for all year, Avengers: Age of Ultron. I was expecting to have to explain some things, as I do with almost every movie, and I did. There were a few profanities. The villain had a messiah complex, complete with some cribbed lines from the actual Messiah. But what surprised me the most was the jarring centrality of the family in this film. And by family, I don't mean the elastic, redefined concept of "families" but an undercurrent of pining for the stability of the natural, nuclear familyTo read more, click here.

Word of Encouragement

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

God's whole purpose is to bring us to the point where he can walk with us quietly, calmly & constantly, leaving us space to grow to be his (often fumbling) colaborers.
