Tiburon Baptist Church

March 2015

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

Pastor Thomas Helwys and twelve other congregants founded a new church in 1612 at Spitalfields, near the Liverpool Street Station in London today. This church was the result of the Bible being translated into English directly from the Greek manuscripts by a Catholic priest named William Tyndale in 1526. It exposed the corruption of the Catholic Church and its leaders. Tyndale would be defrocked, strangled at the stake and then his body burned by King Henry VIII and the Church Bishops for his crime of translating an "unauthorized version" of the Bible on Oct. 6, 1536. Unfortunately for King Henry, a new technology called the printing press could not be silenced and Tyndale's translation flowed into the island, igniting an English reformation.

The teachings of this first Baptist church were revolutionary and provoked great persecution by the Church and State. Helwys would be imprisoned for his beliefs by King James, (King James of the Authorized Version), dying in Newgate prison in 1616. He was 40 years old. We ought to take pause and consider the price paid to establish the Baptist church for our benefit. They were sacrificial leaders willing to die to advance three major biblical teachings.

First, the Baptist church would recognize the Word of God as the sole authority for all faith and practice in the life of the church. This was a direct attack on the spiritual authority of the King over the church. This belief proved to be costly.

Second, they rejected infant baptism as having any spiritual validity and found that the New Testament only provided one model for baptism. It was to be practiced only by a believer and they saw only immersion being practiced, advocating this as the biblical model. This sent shock waves throughout England as almost no one had received this kind of baptism. It invalidated the baptism of the King. This insistence on re-baptizing those who had been baptized as infants became their brand name, the "Baptists."

Third, they rejected the rule of the bishops and clergy over the congregation and stated that each congregation was responsible for itself. They had experienced firsthand what happens to the church when just a few privileged individuals ruled. Seeking to rule over God's people by power, the pulpit, personality, or governance structures is a sin. It contradicts the teaching of Jesus in Mark 10 and is expressly forbidden in 1 Peter 5. Christian leadership becomes truly great when it seeks to serve and lead by example. The difference between ruling and leading is that the followers are allowed to say no.

These teachings are just as biblical today as in 1612. They were not trying to fit in with the world rather they were calling the church back to God's Word. I believe that we are at the turning point of what being a Baptist really means. I also believe that churches and pastors who articulate these beliefs in clear terms to their community will find a compelling interest. Let's not hide who we are but advocate for what the Bible teaches us to be. We are a church under God's Word, an immersed and regenerate people and serving God and each other with a belief that God's church has equality for all.

BASS Conference - March 5-7
We are registered as a church for the Bay Area Sunday School Conference. Don't let the name fool you. There is no fishing required. There will be workshops for virtually every type of ministry and committee in the church to help us do a more effective job in doing what God has called us to do. Since we are registered as a church, you pay nothing at the door. We hope you will review the schedule and take advantage of this once-a-year opportunity to be better equipped for the ministry in which you currently serve. Click here to check out the workshop listing. When registering, the code for TBC is UBWXR. Click here for directions.

Ordination Council
Ordination is one of the true privileges and honors in the life of a church as we witness the next step of God's call to ministry service in the life of one of our members. As TBC members, you are invited to join us as we convene an ordination council on Sunday, March 8th, at 4:00 pm to examine Adam Christman for the gospel ministry. Adam & Rachel have been a valuable part of TBC since arriving to begin their training at the seminary. We have watched their family literally grow up before our eyes. We hope you will be present for this sacred moment in their pilgrimage.
Annie Armstrong Easter Offering
The annual offering that supports our national church planting and evangelism efforts across the United States comes each year during our Easter season. The national goal for this year is $60 million. Our TBC goal is $2000. We will be sharing stories during the weeks leading up to Easter related to our efforts to share the love of Jesus with America. Begin praying for our home missionaries and for what the Lord will lay on your heart to support this offering.

Men's Retreat at Camp Cazadero
Recreated in God's Image is the theme for this years men's retreat at Camp Cazadero on April 17-18. Our speakers will include Rich Johnstone, the Send City Director for the Bay Area, Pastor Glenn, and some testimonies from some of our guys. Worship will be led by Tyler Sanders. This is the men's primary event for the year, so we want to encourage you to come and bring a friend who needs to get out of cell phone range and relax for a few hours in the Redwoods.

We will depart Marin at 5 pm on Friday, Apr 17, and end with dinner on Saturday, returning home in a little over 24 hours. This always proves to be a valuable commitment of time as our guys are able to receive valuable teaching, worship our God, hear the testimonies of fellow travelers on the Christian journey, and enjoy the beauty of God's marvelous creation at the camp.

We hope you will join us. The cost is $95, but don't let money be your issue for not coming. Scholarships are available. For more details see Eric K, Dan M, or Andrew G.

Tapestry Women's Conference
Golden Gate Seminary will host this years women's conference sponsored by our California Southern Baptist Convention. The dates are April 24 & 25, beginning on Friday evening. Lotsa Helping Hands
A website account from Lotsa Helping Hands has been set up for Madeline Engelland. She is the 8 year old daughter of Ryan & Marian Engelland who are a part of our Wednesday night fellowship. They have four daughters and are all part of our Children's Music programs. Madeline has been diagnosed with cancer and she finished her first 3-day session of chemo last week. She is home but cannot attend school. Lotsa Helping Hands is a way to support the family in many ways. Get there by clicking on the link at the bottom.

Once there, click on the JOIN THIS COMMUNITY tab and follow the simple steps to register. Your request to join will come to us and we will "approve" your request (required by the website). You will be able to log on anytime to see what needs the Engellands have. On this Lotsa Helping Hands site you will also find links to their Caring Bridge site and to the Take Them A Meal site (in the blue tab bar at the top).

Thank you for remembering that Maddie's immune system will be extremely compromised during her chemo treatments. If you sign up for something involving the kids or their house and you become sick, please don't hesitate to cancel! We all agree that Maddie's health is the top priority!

Click here for Engelland Helping Hands. And put Maddie on your prayer list and pray for her every day.
Pastor Glenn's Announcement
At the January Leadership Council meeting, Pastor Glenn announced that he has been invited to move south when the seminary relocates to Ontario. This announcement was made public at the Feb Family Meeting.

Having served as Executive Pastor at TBC since Aug 2003, he began teaching at the seminary as an adjunct in 2005 and was elected to the faculty in 2009. He is the director of the Theological Field Education program, coordinating internships for all five of Golden Gate's campuses. This has been a part-time position while continuing his full-time duties at TBC.

While the seminary at the Mill Valley campus will continue through the spring semester of 2016, the exact dates of the Prescott's move have not been determined.

Word of Encouragement

"The days are coming," declares the Lord,
"when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.
This is the name by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.
