Tiburon Baptist Church

January 2015

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

January is here and the annual signal to the coming of a new year. 2015 has arrived and as we learned in the Children's sermon on Sunday, most adults will keep their New Year's resolutions until roughly January 15th. Oh, we have the best of intentions and always want to hope to do better this year, but when the work begins and we have to commit to being faithful to the task, we let interruptions and excuses get in the way. We could always hope to lose a few more pounds, watch a little less television, and get up off the couch to go for a walk, but what about on the spiritual side of the equation.

Would you like to be more faithful in reading your Bible this year? Would you be able to be more sacrificial in your charitable giving this year? Would you be more open to sharing your faith with a friend during the coming year? We could ask a thousand questions that all have the same positive answer.

What about your time around the church? Do you simply show up at the designated hour and leave when the service is over? If God were to open the right door of ministry for you, what would it look like? When it comes to ministry in the church, we tend to see the same faces doing the same tasks year in and year out. Trust me when I say we are thankful for their faithfulness, but even the faithful few would appreciate a helping hand from time to time. Some of us play the "I've served my time" card. Trust me again when I say, no one can serve too much. It is our prayer that in 2015 you will find a new place of service; one that you have never considered and plug into the body of Christ in this place.

Let me end with an old story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. So Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Ida Times Leaving TBC - AA Search Begins
We received some distressing news this week that Ida will be leaving us to begin a new career in her chosen field of social work. We have been blessed to have Ida at the helm of our office for the past six years. She has truly understood that the person who sits at her desk is often the first line of ministry into the lives of people who write, stop by, or call on the phone. She leaves huge shoes to be filled, but we are certain that just as God brought her our way, He will bring another.

The Personnel Committee has already begun the task of searching for a new Administrative Assistant for the TBC office. We ask that you begin praying both for Ida as she transitions to a new role and for the person God brings our way. If you have any ideas or suggestions that you want to pass our way, please contact Don Comfort, our chair of personnel, by clicking here.
Golden Gate Bridge Closure
By now, you've heard that the Golden Gate Bridge will be closed this coming weekend beginning at midnight on Friday through 4 am on Monday. The Marin IJ reported that they will be installing some type of new lane changing device, but Pastor Glenn has it on good authority that they will be closing the bridge for other "top secret" reasons. Please plan accordingly as you travel on 101 this weekend and stay away from the bridge.
January Bible Study
You are invited to join us for three Sunday evenings beginning January 11th as ken eakins teaches from the book of Habakkuk. On any given Sunday morning, ken's Agape class is packed, but the whole church will have opportunity to sit under his teaching. Having retired as a pediatrician, Old Testament scholar, and archaeologist, ken provides a wealth of knowledge and experience as he brings this OT prophet to life. We will begin promptly at 5 pm on Jan 11, 18, and 25.
San Quentin Clearance List
If you are interested in getting on the clearance list for going into San Quentin for 2015, you will have opportunity on Jan 11th & 18th to sign up. We will have a table in the Gallery to gather your information. You do not have to sing in the choir to be a part of the group. Our Saturday dates for 2015 are Mar 7, Jun 20, Sep 19, Dec 4, Dec 12, and Dec 19.

Also, Kathleen Jackson will be speaking on her new book, Bind the Testimony, at Corte Madera's Book Passage on Saturday, Jan 24, at 1 pm. She is the teacher and mentor of San Quentin's Christian Creative Writing class and the book shares the testimonies of students from the class and their faith in Christ. She is pictured above with her students.
Gabrielle Benefit Event
As you continue to pray for Gabrielle, we hope you will join us on Friday, Jan 23rd beginning at 4:30 for a benefit event for her. This will be a fun event for the whole family. We ask that you to RSVP by clicking here.
Cookies, Cakes, and Pies - Oh My!
Calling all bakers! The Jan 23rd Comedy for a Cause Benefit for Gabby Gaskell will include a Dessert Silent Auction.

We would love to auction off your signature sweet treat! Please contact Susan Butler or call her at 388-7751 if you would like to bake something for the benefit.

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering Final
We are about ready to close the book on the 2014 LMCO offering. We want you to know that we received $29,165.00 to support our missionaries around the world. Many believe that this is the largest offering we have received for Lottie Moon. We are grateful to God for His movement in all of our hearts as we stand united in sharing the Good News of Jesus with the whole World. Thank you for your contribution.
TBC Building Update

Josh Felix, our representative from Dan Cook's Building God's Way office, met with Town of Tiburon early last month. Overall the meeting went well and the concept plans did not raise any immediate red flags. However, this project based on its location, is going to have a great deal of scrutiny through the entitlement process. We will need to be prepared to patiently jump through all the necessary hoops. It will be essential to meet with neighbors to remove or lessen any opposition as soon as we can.

As we knew, the project will require a conditional use permit (CUP). The Project will require an additional Environmental Review called a California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This is a surprise, since the project does not entail the usual CEQA triggers like creek beds, watersheds, critical habitats, historical structures, environmental hazards, etc. Unlike some other municipalities in the Bay Area, Tiburon will utilize their own environmental specialist for this review, at our cost. Also, TBC will be required to provide studies and reports required by the CEQA reviewer, such as surveys, soils reports, hydrology reports, traffic and noise studies, etc.

The CUP process in Tiburon does not include design review (DR). It simply approves the proposed use on the site. DR will encompass the details of the approved use. This would include building massing, elevations, materials, and colors. The DR process will be worked out at the staff level and then be presented to the town Design Review Board for actual approval.

After design approval, we may submit our building plans to obtain a building permit.

Overall CUP/DR/Permit process timeline is 11-18 months. We will plan on the full 18 months and be pleasantly surprised if permits are issued earlier. We should plan to be ready to start construction as soon as the permit issues, whenever that may be.

We are seeking an estimate of costs expected to be incurred up to the date the permit issues and will report on that when received. Please feel free to direct any questions or comments to Dan McLennon, building committee chair.

Raising Deep Roots

Raising Deep Roots is a website created to encourage and equip in RAISING up children with DEEP ROOTS in the word of God. This is a site for parents, grandparents, teachers, and all those who love children. This is an invitation to join us in the endeavor to be a bit more intentional in our parenting at home when it comes to teaching the things of God and doing what we can to make our homes more focused on the love Jesus. We'd love for you to subscribe and hopefully find some encouragement, some tried and true resources, and some ideas for making scripture memory, Bible reading, and family devotion time meaningful, fun, and fruitful. Even more exciting to us is the thought that you would dialogue back with us. Share your successes, your ideas, your frustrations, and your joys and aha moments with us. Many of you have walked this path ahead of us and we crave your wisdom. Please visit the new site and subscribe. If you are interested in writing a guest post please let Susan Butler know!

Super Bowl Parties
On Sunday, Feb 1st, you are encouraged to host a Super Bowl party for your friends and neighbors. Our evangelism team will be sharing ideas for sharing your faith during your Big Game event. We hope you will take this opportunity to share Jesus with folks who will come watch a game, but might not come to church.

One feature that we will provide is a 30-minute video to show at half-time. It will feature testimonies from current NFL players, interviews about faith in the NFL, and a gospel presentation by former NFL player and current pastor Miles McPherson. If you want to participate in using this video, contact Pastor Glenn.
GGBTS Missions Conference
The Nations Are Calling is the theme for the upcoming missions conference hosted by the seminary on Feb 20-21. The keynote speaker is our very own Todd Lafferty, Affinity Group Strategy Leader for South Asia. This will prove to be an important event in the lives of all who attend. We hope you will make plans to attend. Stay tuned for more details.
On Target Evangelism Event
A group from TBC will be heading to Tracy for the annual On Target Evangelism Rally on Monday, Feb 23rd. This is sponsored by our California Southern Baptist Convention. In order to get through rush hour traffic, we will be leaving early to mid afternoon. We will provide more details, but if you are interested in going with Pastors Glenn & Brice, let us know.
Mt Hermon Women's Retreat

On the weekend of Mar 6-8, you are invited to join several women from TBC at the Mount Hermon Women's Spring Reflective retreat.

As the winter season gives way into spring, new life begins to push it's way into view. Paying attention to what is growing beneath the cover of winter and nurturing it's growth often takes time; time to be quiet, time to listen, time to rest. The Mount Hermon Spring Reflective Retreat offers you the opportunity to spend time paying attention to your soul. Unlike other women's retreats, the Mount Hermon reflective retreats are designed to provide a quantity of time alone with the Lord.

While this retreat is designed to provide the space and quiet to nurture the soul, there are also ample opportunities for fellowship with like-minded women around great meals and free time. Mount Hermon's adventure facilities and popular recreation options like ocean kayaking are an option as part of your program.

Word of Encouragement

My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding-
indeed, if you call out for insight
    and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.

Wisdom

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.
