The 10% Solution

Every year our Stewardship Committee works diligently in putting together a budget that represents all facets of ministry in which TBC is involved. We ask committees and ministry groups within the church to voice their desired needs for the coming year. We bring the new budget before the congregation, asking for approval of the budget and giving our congregation the opportunity to make their commitment toward meeting that budget. By doing this, you support TBC dthroughout the coming year without having to pick and choose where the money is spent since that is determined in the budget formation process.

The real secret to making the budget process work is a simple 10% solution. We have been told that if the US government abolished all loopholes and every citizen and every business gave a straightforward 10% of what they made, we would have no more financial worries on the national level. Whether this is true or not, it is absolutely true on the church level; any church, any size. But we seem to be held captive to the 80-20 rule; approximately 20% of the people providing 80% of the income for most budgets. Those figures will vary from place to place, but they are pretty accurate across the board and TBC's numbers are not far off.

The problem comes in the fact that the average person who makes a million a year cannot fathom giving $100,000 a year as a tithe, while at the same time, the average person who makes $10,000 a year cannot fathom giving $1,000 a year as a tithe. The key word in that statement is average. The people who tithe are not average. God does not call us to be average. While tithing was required under the Mosaic Law, Scripture for those no longer under the law, but under grace does not impose the tithe as an ongoing obligation. Paul says, rather, that the Christian should give "as he has purposed in his heart" (2 Cor 9:7).

Some of you cannot fathom giving 10% of your income to God. Well, maybe he does not want 10%. For some of you he may want 15% and others maybe 5%. However, God may not require you to plunge in over your head. I suggest that you "test God" as Malachi 3:8-10 encourages. Start with 2% or 3% or 5%. Pick a starting point and trust God to enable you to increase it a percent or two each year. And remember, you don't have to stop at 10%.

Are you ready to stop being average? Are you ready to start moving toward the 10% solution? Go ahead and test God. He is up for the challenge.

Deacon Selection Process Extended
You have suggested people from our congregation to serve as new deacons. Due to committee travel and illness, we have adjusted their timeline and new deacons will begin in November. The process continues with contacts and invitations taking place. We ask that you be in prayer for this process during this time. Remember that we are not making deacons, but we are calling out those from among our ranks who already exhibit the qualities that are required for deacon service. We will vote on those whom you've recommended and have accepted the invitation on Sunday, Oct 19. Then on Sunday night, Oct 26, we will gather to commission these new deacons.
Capital Campaign Committee
The newly formed CCC had their first meeting this week. Regular updates of their progress are planned. This is an exciting time to put our trust in God's faithful leadership and guidance as we undertake a God-sized task. Please pray for your CCC: Jerry, Dan, Barbara, Nancy, Andrew, Steve, Elizabeth, Jim, Ben, Madeleine, and the ministry staff.
What's Happening in the Youth Group?
A new crop of 6th graders have arrived and the annual adjustment to the youth group is underway. We had a great night at Open Door last Friday with many exciting things planned for the fall. Join us on Sat Oct 11th at 6 pm for dinner and game night. On Fri Oct 24th, we head to Petaluma for the life-size Maze. No maps this year and families are encouraged to join in the fun. We hope you will be with us each Sunday morning and Wednesday night for a challenging time of study and fellowship.
Membership Class Begins October 12
The next installment of our 3-week membership class begins on Sunday, Oct 12, at 9:30 am in the sanctuary. If you are not a member and have questions about what it means at TBC, this class is for you. We will explore aspects of what is expected of members and what members can expect from TBC. If you've been thinking about joining, have questions that need clarification, or simply want to learn more, we hope you will be a part of this upcoming course taught by Pastor Glenn.
Women's Jewelry & Craft Night
The ladies will gather on Friday, Oct 17th, at 7 pm, for a night of making jewelry and crafts. Cost for the evening is $10. This is a perfect time to bring a friend. Sign up in the Gallery beginning on Sunday.

Men's Fraternity: 33 The Series
Men of TBC, we will come together to focus on being husbands, fathers, sons, and friends in this 6-week series from the producers of Men's Fraternity. We will begin on Sunday, Oct 19, at 3:30 pm and finish by Thanksgiving. You will have opportunity to sign up electronically or at the table in Gallery. Be an encouragement to one of your friends in the church and challenge them to join you in this study. Ladies, encourage your husbands to join us. More details coming soon. See Eric or Dan if you have further questions.
Creative Ideas for Halloween
It's October friends! Let me guess... your kids are already wearing their Halloween costumes around the house? Costumes are ordered but we await shipment, so my boys are instead squeezing into one size too small costumes and running around roaring like lions, squeaking like bats, wielding swords as noble knights, and rattling their skeleton bones! I'm not a trained educator but I've noticed over the years that teaching using themes works really well! So please, take some time during the month of October to explore some fun ideas and suggestions on how to turn some common Halloween themes into a fun time of exploring the truths of God together as a family! Click on a links below to learn more.
World Hunger Sunday
October 12th is World Hunger Sunday. Our missionary partners are in sight of so many examples of people who go to bed each night hungry. We have been blessed to be a blessing to others. We are invited to contribute through Global Hunger Relief. Go to this site to learn how you can help.
California Mission Offering
cmo
We are grateful to God that we exceeded our goal for the 2014 California Mission Offering. Our total offering received to date is $2467. This gift will support church planters, evangelism events, Feed Those Who Feed Us, and a variety of other efforts to touch the lives of Californians for Christ. Thank you for your generosity toward this offering.
Big God Ministries: Thanksgiving Turkeys
For the past several years, Big God Ministries has provided turkeys at Thanksgiving and toys at Christmas for families across Marin County. Last year they gave out 1,000 turkeys, and this year they hope to give away 5,000. They cannot do this without our help. Pastor David Hall is a trusted friend of TBC and we hope you will help with this ministry effort right here in our county. You can make your donation out to Big God Ministries (they are non-profit) and mail it to:

Word of Encouragement

Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel  I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.

I Corinthians 15:1-5

The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one's life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.
