Tiburon Baptist Church

September 2014

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

School is back in session. We have new first graders, middle schoolers, high schoolers, and we've even sent some new freshmen off to college. Transitions are always before us and never easy. As a parent, I remember each of these firsts in the lives of my children. At each level, there were successes to be celebrated, adjustments to be made, encouragement to be shared, problem to be solved, and always plenty of tears to go around.

Growing up is not an easy task. Each new adventure brings its own set of challenges and they hardly ever seem easy. As believers in Christ, hear these words from Paul's letter to the church in Philippi. If you have an encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interest, but also to the interests of others

When trouble comes our way, we tend to focus on ourselves. When praise comes our way, we tend to focus on ourselves. When anything happens in life, we tend to focus on ourselves. This passage encourages us to take that focus off of ourselves and put it on others.

We were created by community (the Triune God) to be in community (the world we live in). We must clearly understand that life is a team sport. There are too many examples in life of people doing their own thing. When my son was in first grade, he came home to tell us about a bully on the playground. After a long talk about this boy that was terrorizing the monkey bars, I asked my son what he thought this kid needed most. After careful thought, he responded by saying that his greatest need was probably a friend. And we turned our attention towards how that might be accomplished.

This little boy's actions on the playground only highlighted the focus on himself. It's time for all of us to move that spotlight to others around us and see about making a difference in our community. Whose life can you touch today with a kind word or a helpful act? Believe me, there are so few words and actions of this type in our world today, yours will be noticed. And it may even provide the opportunity to share the kindest words and most helpful action of all in sharing what Jesus has done in your life.

Look around and see who needs a friend today!

Ministries For Our Children
There are three ministry opportunities THIS WEEK in which you will want to take part. Pastor Brice will send out a more detailed email blast to parents, but here is the quick rundown of items for your attention:

1. Pr
ayer for our Children - Thursday, Sept 4 - Are you a parent? Do your kids attend private or public school or are they home schooled? Do you have preschoolers, elementary, middle, high schoolers, or kids in college? This is a time of prayer for our children, their teachers, the school environment, and parents. Are you a teacher? We would love to be able to pray over you and bless your year in the classroom. Everyone is welcomed to the Butler home, 23 Strawberry Circle in Mill Valley. RSVP's are welcomed by calling Susan at 415-388-7751. Hope you can make it.

2. Sa
fety Training - Saturday, Sept 6 - TBC is developing the safest possible environment for our children. To assist in accomplishing this goal, regular trainings are essential. For any volunteer in preschool, children, or youth ministry who has not yet completed this training, or if you would benefit from a refresher, please join us. Please RSVP by emailing Pastor Brice.

3. Worshipping with ChildrenSunday, Sept 7 - If you're like many parents or grandparents, worshiping with children or grandchildren of any age can be a complex challenge. We'd like to encourage you and to help you discover ways to maximize TBC's inter-generational worship.

This Sunday, parents and grandparents are invited to discuss worshiping with your young ones. You will learn about resources that are available (some new to be introduced this fall) to help you, as you help your child enter the joy of worship. This will take place during the Bible study time 9:40-10:40 am, in the sanctuary.

Sign-up isn't necessary, however, please inform your Adult Bible Study teacher that you will be joining this one-Sunday event this week.
FTWFU Report Night
On Sunday, Sept 7th, we will gather at 5 pm for an evening of reporting and sharing from our summer project in Davis at the Migrant Farm Center. You will get a taste of the activities that brought together members from four different churches as we ministered to the families who make up the Migrant Farm Center in Davis. Over 70 TBC folks participated again this year. We hope you will join us on Sunday for this time of celebration.
What's Happening in the Youth Group?
As school is now underway, Ben and the rest of the youth welcome the new 6th graders as they enter the youth group. Pastor Steve will be announcing a parent meeting very soon to unveil the youth program for the school year. Pray for all of our youth and leaders, especially the new ones moving up from the children's department.
Mission Opportunity Night
We will gather on Sunday, Sept 21st, at 5 pm to learn about mission activity and project opportunities that are available through a variety of relationships that we continue to nurture. We will hear from several of our missions touch points and learn the ongoing needs and prayer concerns on various fields of service. We can then begin praying as to how the Lord might use groups coming out of our church to work alongside these missionaries in the future. We have been called to go into all the world. We will hear from different portions of our world on this night and we hope you will join us for this evening.
Building Plan Update
At the family meeting a couple of weeks ago, the church elected the Capital Campaign committee. It is made up of Elizabeth Liu, Dan McLennon, Madeleine Lee, Ben Skaug, Steve McKinney, Nancy Rehkopf, Andrew Gillmer, Barbara Kreissler, and chairman Jerry Lewis.

The next step is to take plans to Tiburon for approval. As developments happen, we will share updates with you regarding progress. Stay tuned.
Deacon Selection Process Is Underway
You have nominated people from our congregation to serve as new deacons to begin in October. That process is underway with contacts and invitations taking place. We ask that you be in prayer for this process during this time. Remember, that we are not making deacons, but we are calling out those from among our ranks who already exhibit the qualities that are required for deacon service. We will vote on those whom you've nominated and have accepted the invitation on Sunday, Sept 28. Then on Sunday night, Oct 5, we will gather to commission these new deacons.
California Mission Offering
cmo
September is the month for our California Mission Offering emphasis. The theme for this year is Be Bold. We are called upon to join with other SBC churches across CA to Be Bold in our efforts to minister and reach Californians for Christ. The state goal is $475,000 and our TBC goal is $1500. This offering supports FTWFU, church planting, Disaster Relief, state-wide evangelism efforts, and a variety of other ministry efforts focused on sharing Jesus with the 33 million unsaved residents living in California.
Big God Ministries Thanksgiving Turkeys
For the past several years, Big God Ministries has provided turkeys at Thanksgiving and toys at Christmas for families across Marin County. Last year, they gave out 1,000 turkeys and this year, they hope to give away 5,000. They cannot do this without our help. Pastor David Hall is a trusted friend of TBC and we hope you will help with this ministry effort right here in our county. You can make your donation out to Big God Ministries (they are non-profit) and mail it to:

Word of Encouragement

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Colossians 1:15-20
