The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

Here are some U.S. statistics for the year 1907: the average life expectancy in the U.S. is 47 years; 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. have a bathtub; 8 percent of the homes have a telephone; a three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11; there are 8,000 cars in the U.S. and 144 miles of paved roads; the speed limit in most cities is 10 mph; Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa and Tennessee are each more heavily populated than California; 1.4 million people live in California - the 21st most populous state; the tallest structure in the world is the Eiffel Tower; average wage in the U.S. is 22 cents per hour; average U.S. worker makes between $200 and $400 per year; more than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. take place at home; 90% percent of all U.S. doctors have no college education - they attended so-called medical schools, many of which are condemned as substandard; sugar cost four cents a pound; eggs are fourteen cents a dozen; coffee is fifteen cents a pound; women wash their hair once a month using borax or egg yolks for shampoo; a Canada law prohibits poor people from entering their country for any reason; the five leading causes of death in the U.S. are: (1) pneumonia & influenza, (2) tuberculosis, (3) diarrhea, (4) heart disease, and (5) stroke; the American flag has 45 stars - Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii andAlaska haven't been admitted yet; the population of Las Vegas is 30 people; crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea haven't been invented; there is no Mother's Day or Father's Day; two out of every 10 U.S. adults can't read or write; 6 percent of all Americans graduate from high school; marijuana, heroin, and morphine are all available over the counter at the local drugstore -  pharmacists say heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is a perfect guardian of health;there are about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.A.

Here is some reality for the year 2014: we have made staggering progress in so many areas in the 107 years since these statistics were produced. The technological advances of the last quarter century continue to boggle the mind. And yet our world is still filled with tragedy, pain and despair. Headlines are filled with atrocities from every continent and we continue to be shocked again and again. Matthew wrote about this when Jesus said, for many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places (Matthew 24:5-7).

We can draw encouragement by these words from Jesus to his disciples. A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:32-33).

TBC Summer Picnic at Hoog Park
The annual summer picnic is Saturday, August 16, beginning at 11 am. The church will provide the meat and you are asked to sign-up to provide a salad or dessert for the picnic. Get your favorite hat, dust off your lawn chair, find that frisbee, don't forget your sunscreen, and bring a friend. If you have questions, see Anne Comfort. Make plans to be with us.
What's Happening in the Youth Group?
As school gets ready to start, the youth will say good-bye to Tyler Fort as he heads to Texas to start college. We are grateful to God for the young man he has become and it is our prayer that he will continue to grow in his walk with the Lord.

Tyler, blessings as you head to the Lone Star State.

New Deacon Nominations Begin Aug 17
We ask that you begin praying now for whom the Lord might lay on your heart as we begin the process of selecting our new deacons. We will have an insert in the bulletin on Aug 17 & 24 for you to nominate our next group of deacons. Remember that deacons must be members of the church. As you consider those who might be ready to serve TBC in the capacity, read again the qualifications of a deacon in 1st Timothy 3.
Potluck & Family Meeting
Join us on Sunday, Aug 24, at 5:30 pm for our quarterly potluck meal before we consider the current business affairs of the church. This is a great time of fellowship and an opportunity to see exactly how the church functions. As a member, you can make your voice count. If you are not yet a member, you can join us for dinner and observe. See you on Aug 24.
Family Camp at Mt Hermon
Labor Day weekend is rapidly approaching. If you're interested in going to Family Camp at Mt Hermon in the Santa Cruz Mountains, see Pastor Brice right away. There are scholarships available.

Word of Encouragement

But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, "In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires." These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear-hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Jude 17-23
