"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." - Ps. 119:105

Do you know how amazing the Bible is? We become so accustomed to having one, two or ten around the house, we forget how precious the book truly is. We toss it around, leave it at church or in the backseat of the car, or we neglect it on the bedside table. But a brief backward glimpse through its history can help us recover the respect it deserves.

The word "Bible" means literally "little papyrus books". It's a collection of manuscripts, written by around forty different men over the course of 1600 years. The first was Moses who recorded his contributions around 1500 B.C. and the last author was the apostle John who wrote "Revelation" around 95 A.D.

The Old Testament is composed of 39 books, assembled as a unit by the leading Jews of eons past who recognized those writings as being inspired by God. This collection of texts was considered complete and closed around four hundred years before Jesus was born. The New Testament covers the period beginning with the birth of Jesus and continuing for a period of about ninety-five years, as the apostles spread the Gospel throughout the known world. The church gradually came to an agreement that the current 27 books of the New Testament were truly inspired.

The Bible's original manuscripts were written in three different languages. Most of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, but some sections were written in Aramaic, another Semitic language. When Greece became a world power, the Old Testament was translated into Greek by 70 Jewish scholars and was called the Septuagint (meaning "seventy"). And then the entire New Testament was written in Greek. From there, the Bible was translated into Latin. Unfortunately, the text was altered significantly by religious leaders with an agenda. So when attempts were made to translate the scriptures into English, there was much resistance, turmoil and persecution. John Wycliffe and William Tyndale are credited with helping the English Bible gain acceptance and credibility as the better translation from the original Greek and Hebrew. From there, we've seen hundreds of translations in English as well as other world languages.

The Bible is truly a treasure, preserved by God through centuries of work and the dedication of His workers. So as you read those words of life today, know that God has orchestrated all these events of the past so you could have a revelation of His will and ways. Through the Bible, God can teach you, render fatherly discipline, change your beliefs and priorities, and even alter your life. Don't take the Bible lightly!

If you have not seen this video, click here to watch some Chinese Christians receiving Bibles, many for the first time. Here is what the woman in the video is saying: Looking at this book, I literally see those brothers and sisters who have been helping us with their blood and tears....This is exactly what our church needs the most. This is the very book that we need the most.

Feed Those Who Feed Us
During the next three Sundays, May 11, 18, & 25, we will gather for a brief meeting in room 24 in the Gallery immediately following worship for an opportunity to let you know what's coming this summer and for you to tell us your interest in being a part of this special missions event. God has brought a portion of the world to our backyard as we minister to the migrant farm workers serving in Davis on July 7-11. We hope you will join us.
This Month with the Thursday Lunch Club
Are you the adventerous type? Our over 50 crowd will have their last event of the spring on Thursday, May 15th, at 11:30 am. Bring a potluck dish, join in the fellowship, and make some suggestions for what you would like to do when the group reconvenes in the fall.
Spring Music Festival
Join us on Sunday night, May 18th, at 5 pm for the climax to a wonderful spring of music from our preschoolers to our adult choir. This proves to be a seasonal favorite as we hear praise from every age group in the church. We are grateful to Beth and all of the other adults who faithfully work with our kids every week.
Sports Camp 2014 - SIGN-UP NOW!
Your children ages 4-11 will not want to miss Sports Camp this summer. Camp will include Bible study, great music, testimonies from the Uncharted Waters coaches, snacks, and of course sports. Your child can choose from soccer, basketball, cheerleading, and this year flag football will be added to the choices. The 4-5 year olds will have their own special time of play and activity time. Camp is Mon - Fri, June 23-27, from 9:15 to 12:15 each morning. Please visit the information table in the Gallery on Sunday for more information. Scholarships are available.

Stay tuned for Children's Camp info coming soon.
What's Happening in the Youth Group?
On Sunday, May 4th, our youth led us in worship. If you were not here, you missed a real treat. We hope you will share with your friends and neighbors that the Lord is doing a great thing in our teenagers and our youth leaders take serious their calling to serve our Lord through ministry to our youth. If you did not hear Pastor Steve's message, go to the TBC website and listen. It is a clear and compelling message. Pray for our youth as they gear up for a busy summer working with the FTWFU project and go to Centrifuge. And don't forget that Pastor Steve and Tyler Sanders graduate on May 23rd at the Civic Center. The big deal starts at 7:30 that evening.
Women's Prayer Event
Called to Deep Prayer is a women's prayer emphasis led by Joan Corron on Saturday, May 24th from 9 am till noon. This will be an investigation to gain deeper intimacy with the Lord through meditation and prayer, as well as creating an atmosphere that is conducive for contemplation. Ladies, we hope you will set aside Saturday morning May 24 to take part in this special prayer event. Sign-up in the Gallery beginning this Sunday.
Cecile's Craft Sale
Be on the lookout for Cecile's Craft table to be up for business in the coming weeks. You will find gifts for everyone. The proceeds for this event will go to help defray costs for Gabby Gaskell's travel to her daily treatments at Stanford and for our Feed Those Who Feed Us project at the Migrant Farm Center in Davis this July. Be ready to support Cecile's hard work and these great causes when you see her table.
Gifts of Love
The Sanctuary/Journey Bible Study class in which Doug and Leda were members will be sending a gift of love to support their ministries and personal needs as they make their move this summer. We would like to include anyone interested. Checks may made directly to them, will be sent to their son who manages their U.S. account, and can be given to Pastor Glenn or Joanne Stubblefield. We hope you will join us in this gift of love.
California Southern Baptist e-Edition
Here is the May e-edition of our CSBC paper. Read about what Pastor Glenn and others said about Camp Cazadero and see the article on TBC hosting the All Nations prayer conference for Bay Area language churches. Simply  click here to begin reading.

Word of Encouragement
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
II Timothy 3:10-17
