Tiburon Baptist Church

April 2014

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

During my first 8 years as a member of the ministry staff at Tiburon, I served on campus at Dominican University with college students. From my years of collegiate ministry, it was a natural inclination to venture out to the campus and plug in. It was not a part of my job description, just something that I loved.

I showed up one night at a small meeting of the only Christian non-Catholic group on campus. When it came time for introductions, I shared that I was a pastor from Tiburon Baptist Church, that I loved students, and I was here to support them and pray for them in any way I could. I believe they were puzzled by this, but after my faithful attendance at their meeting every Wednesday night at 9:00 for a year and a half, they understood that I did not have a personal agenda and they began to look to me as their campus pastor and sought counsel on how to expand the ministry.

After four years together and a significant name change that more accurately communicated who we were and why we were on campus, the group grew from 7 students to an average of 50-60 students in attendance each week. This growth was not without the normal growing pains of ministry. There was a time early on when individual students wanted to take the ministry in a different direction.

My response to them was that I was a busy pastor and did not have time to work with the group unless we agreed upon one thing. Since we were an interdenominational group drawing students from a wide variety of faith backgrounds and some with none at all, we had to stay focused on Jesus Christ and the authoritative Word of God. The student leadership embraced this and it proved to keep our singular focus on track. It would serve to form and shape our identity as a campus organization.

I often think of how TBC has been, is, and will be known. If we took a poll of our members and regular attenders, we would undoubtedly receive a variety of responses. The list might include that we are a missions church or we are known for our music or in past days we would have been known as the seminary church. If we included the input of visitors, someone would invariably mention our incredible view. And while all of these might be good and true to an extent, I believe they would all be wrong.

We are called to speak up for those without a voice, care for the poor, visit the incarcerated, and this list could go on and on. It could include ministry to families and children and senior adults and women and men. But again, I believe these would all be pointed in the wrong direction.

As a church, we have been called to two things and two things only. And if we fail at these two things, we will certainly fail at all of the ministries mentioned above because these two things are the secret ingredients upon which everything else we do rests. We have been commanded by Jesus to Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All of the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Do we really love God with all our heart and soul and mind? If that was true, we would place the highest priority on Him alone and forego any selfish ambition understanding that if he is in first place, our needs will be met.

Do we really love our neighbor as ourselves? Oh, we might acknowledge that next door neighbor who waters our flowers when we're on vacation or picks up our mail, but what about that neighbor who cuts us off in traffic or that neighbor who acts as if he or she is entitled to something that we wanted. What about all the times when we think in our heart life is simply not fair?

Loving God or our neighbor in the way He requires is not as easy as flipping a switch. It has to start in relationship with God. We have to know His heart and understand what He desires for us. We must spend time with Him and develop an intimate relationship that requires a daily routine visit with Him. Do you set that time aside each day just for Him?

I hope each of us will spend that time with our Savior and that we as a church would be known for our passionate love for God and our intentional love for our neighbor.

University of Life Comes to an End
This spring's University of Life classes were attended with much passion and enthusiasm. We had about 90 adults and children involved during the two sessions that come to an end this coming Sunday night. A special thanks to all of the faithful hands and hearts that cared for our children during the adult session, particularly Lori B, Amanda J, Melanny K, Sara L, Karis C, Beth S, Brice B, & Stephen A . And a big thanks to our adult leaders: Susan Butler, Craig Singleton, Martha Saul, Glenn & Janet Prescott, Paul Wegner, and our team of Starbucks Evangelists (John F, Willis & Linda R, Samuel M, and Jerry R). Stay tuned as University of Life returns next spring.
Our New Minister to Children
We overwhelmingly voted to call Stephen Aoki as our Minister to Children. He has accepted that call and begins the task of bringing our preschool and children's ministries under his leadership. Please pray for Stephen as he learns the ropes of blending with the ministry staff, gets to know all of the folks on the preschool side of the ministry (he has already been intimately involved on the chidren's side), and as his family (Pauline, Melanny, Cory) makes the adjustment to life as a minister in the church.
Join Stephen Aoki for Lunch
Parents along with preschool & children's ministry leaders are invited to join Stephen Aoki one of two Sundays, April 6 or 13, for lunch after the 11:00 service in the fellowship hall to get to know one another a little better. Stephen wants to share his love and vision for our children and the overall ministry. This opportunity will allow for Stephen to get to know both parents and volunteers a little better. Bring your children downstairs for the international lunch and have 30 minutes of conversation with our Children's Minister.
Potluck & Family Meeting
We will gather on Sunday, April 27, for our potluck and family meeting beginning at 5:30 pm. After missing our February meeting, we will catch up on some important business of the church and hear reports from various ministries.
What's Happening in the Youth Group?
On April 15, our youth will be gathering for an Easter Event at Gilead House and on May 4th They will be leading us in Worship. Check in with Steve for all the details. And don't forget to get all of your summer ducks (as in dynasty) in a row for the upcoming summer mission trip and Centrifuge Camp.
Later dudes!
Sports Camp 2014
Your children ages 4-11 will not want to miss Sports Camp this summer. Camp will include Bible study, great music, testimonies from the Uncharted Waters coaches, snacks, and of course sports. Your child can choose from soccer, basketball, and cheerleading. The 4-5 year olds will have their own special time of play and activity time. Camp is Mon - Fri, June 23-27, from 9:15 to 12:15 each morning. Please visit the information table in the Gallery on Sunday for more information. Scholarships will be available.
Golden Gate Seminary Announcement
By now, most of you have heard something of the news related to Golden Gate's announcement yesterday. It is reported that both the IJ and Chronicle focused their stories the way they chose and did not report all the facts. If you would like to read the seminary's account click here.
The Culture Corner
Last month we highly recommended that you take a friend to see Son of God and let the discussion begin. This month, we won't be recommending Noah, the new film featuring Russel Crowe. Instead, we hope you will check out this insightful review from Dr. Brian Mattson, the Senior Scholar of Public Theology for the Center for Cultural Leadership. This should clarify why so many things in the film don't make sense.

Word of Encouragement
Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received--that Chirst died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appreared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as though to one born at the wrong time, he appeared to me also. For I am the least of the aspostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been in vain. In fact, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God with me. Whether then it was I or they, this is the way we preach and this is the way you believed.
