Tiburon Baptist Church

March 2014

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

Last Tuesday, I met with my new doctor at Kaiser and some routine blood work was ordered. I gave blood that day and then returned again today to complete the process. After providing six vials of blood, I recalled a Red Cross billboard from my childhood days that read, BLOOD SAVES LIVES.

As a college student, I learned about the value of being a blood donor and was a regular donor until I began traveling to dangerous places around the world for the IMB and my days as a Red Cross blood donor were over. As I contemplate the blood that I have provided during this past week, I understand more clearly the various ways in which our health is evaluated by the testing of our blood.

In church we talk about blood quite a bit. We mention it each time we share in the Lord's Supper. We read about it in Scripture in numerous passages from Old to New. And as we prepare to move into the season of Holy Week next month, we will talk about it even more.

Blood is important. At the first Lord's Supper the gospel writers record Jesus sharing the cup with his disciples saying that this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sin. The writer of Hebrews says that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Jesus was born to die and as I once again contemplate that billboard, blood truly does save lives. In fact, it is the only way to salvation. Paul wrote to the church in Rome that God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood--to be received by faith; atonement in order for us to be made one with God through Christ.

It is my prayer that we will seriously consider the shedding of blood by Christ on our behalf. That will help us understand how much God loves us; so much that he allowed his only Son to die in our place; a death that we rightly deserved.

Potluck & Family Meeting
With our recent rainout of the February potluck & family meeting, we are rescheduling a different sort of meeting. On Sunday, April 27, we will have a family meeting only, beginning at 5 pm. Our plan is to deal with some important regular family meeting business very quickly and then turn our full attention to the development of our building plan. We will be brought up to date on the latest plans and we will decide that night as a congregation how to move forward. We were going to schedule a separate night, but felt that we can accomplish both and give you back a Sunday night with your family. Mark your calendars and make plans to join us.
Stephen Aoki Vote on Sunday
With the growth of our ministry to children, TBC has acknowledged the leadership of God in the calling of Stephen Aoki as our Minister to Children and join our ministry staff. We heard his testimony on Sunday and will have an opportunity to ask questions tonight during our Wednesday prayer time at 6:30. On Sunday, March 9, we will vote in both morning services to extend this call to Stephen. Please be in prayer for Stephen, Pauline, Melanny, and Cory as they move through this important week in their life in ministry at TBC.
University of Life 2 begins March 16th
University of Life Session 2 begins on March 16th. Two session 1 offerings will continue with one new class for session 2.
  1. Starbucks Evangelism will be led by different leaders each week: Willis & Linda Rice, John Frierson, Samuel Mulli, and Jerry Lewis. The leaders will share how they share the love of Jesus in their normal comings and goings of life. They will talk about how to engage in a conversation and how they turn to the subject of God. Participants will have opportunity to both share and ask questions about sharing their faith in the daily routine of life.
  2. The Daniel Plan led by Glenn & Janet Prescott continues.
  3. Couples Tune-Up led by Martha Saul continues.

Sign up this coming Sunday in the Gallery.

Son of God in Marin
The release of the film Son of God has provided opportunity for viewers to watch a fair portrayal of Jesus' adult life of ministry that climaxes with his death on the cross and subsequent resurrection. While critics will have their say with the inadequacies of the film, it is well worth the effort to invite your friends and neighbors to view it with you and open up the dialogue that will follow. Last Saturday one of our sister churches in San Jose rented two showings of the film and 300 non-believers attended. At the end of the film, the pastor shared about what they had just watched and 27 people prayed to receive Christ. Pray that he Lord will touch the hearts of people as they view this film. It will only be showing in Marin for a short time longer.
What's Happening in the Youth Group?
In March, our youth will have the very popular Girls Night Out & Guys Night Out. Check with Steve on the details since they are on different nights this time. If you have not decided about Centrifuge yet, see Steve and let him know you're going. Also be praying for our youth as they prepare for Youth Sunday coming on May 4th.

Word of Encouragement
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will not be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
