The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

Today we share a story from a good friend of Pastor Glenn's about an important subject. Whether or not you are a parent, you will understand and be moved.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. Jeremiah 1:5a

When my youngest was still in the womb, he already had a name. His sister kept referring to him as baby Matthew and it was hard to think of him as anyone else. He already had an identity.

Several months before his birth, Matthew started kicking his mother on a frequent basis. I don't know if he was just stretching his legs or if he felt especially energetic, but you can imagine that Rhonda didn't enjoy the experience too much. One time, while he was in the midst of a kicking session, I got close to him and started speaking to him through the womb. Suddenly he stopped kicking. He was listening to my voice as I spoke calmly to him. Matthew . . . Matthew. And this didn't happen just once. Every time after that, when he started kicking, Rhonda would call me and say Come talk to your son.

Even though Matt was only a few months old, he already had a name and were able to connect verbally with him. At a basic level, he was making the decision to stop being active so he could listen to his Dad's soothing voice.

An identity, a relationship, a working mind, and the ability to choose. That's a person. And God said the same thing about young Jeremiah. The Lord informed him that prior to his birth, He already had set him apart for his role as prophet. And God knew Jeremiah as a person, long before his birth.

Although a mother and her child are connected by an umbilical cord, that does not mean they are the same. A baby is its own unique person. Therefore, don't let anyone confuse you on this matter. Once a child has been conceived, he or she is a precious individual, worthy of love and protection. Since the unborn has no voice, it's up to us to protect their right to life.

Word of Encouragement
Love must be sincere, hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above ourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
