January 2014

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

Happy New Year from TBC! We pray that 2014 is off to a good start for you and your family. It is that time to make new years resolutions. We have one to suggest that should be a benefit to us all. Read all the way to the bottom for a resolution we hope you will enjoy.

You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased. Rev. 4:11 (NLT)

Our body is composed of trillions of cells, most of them grouping together to form organs. Why? We don't really know. Approximately seven liters of blood course through our sixty-thousand miles of blood vessels. Amazing! The brain has a storage capacity equivalent to the information contained in twenty-five million books. Like a computer that is beyond anything man has invented, the brain is functioning at a rate of a thousand trillion computations per second. Can you imagine Someone inventing all that and packaging it together into a human being? Genius!

We live in a world created by a God who loves variety and who has a sense of humor. There are 9000 species of birds on our planet, ranging from the gangly ostrich to the petite hummingbird. The animal kingdom includes such oddities as the three-toed sloth, the poisonous Gila monster, flying squirrels, and the Bombardier Beetle. What a great mind it took to think of such interesting creatures! Then consider the limitless array of flowers and the vast spectrum of colors they display. One strange plant, found only in Brazil, actually wounds itself in order to produce a sweet jelly. This attracts specific birds who will then pollinate the flower. And what about the famous Venus Flytrap, that carnivorous plant that entices and feeds off of flying insects? This enormous variety of plant and animal life tells us that we have a highly sophisticated, wildly humorous Inventor who enjoyed making of nature an outrageous spectacle of creativity.

As we look beyond our atmosphere and consider other worlds, we are staggered by the intricacy of all that surrounds us. Our globe is orbited by the moon, which keeps us rotating at the right speed and stops us from teetering toward Jupiter. We are situated at a perfect distance from the sun so that its million-degree temperature doesn't scorch us. Further in space, the intertwined ice-rings of Saturn defy human logic. The laws of physics cant explain why they would be twisted around each other, like hair thats been braided. In the midst of this grandeur of design, we remember that our solar system is only one of at least 200 billion in the Milky Way. And our galaxy is only one in a hundred billion in the universe.

Are you ever tempted to think that God is a bore, or that He's an arthritic grandfatherly figure, leaning on a huge walking stick? Think again! He's a fun-loving, unconventional and jubilant mastermind. Praise Him!

The new years resolution that we hope you will make this year is to spend a few minutes each day reflecting on the Lord. You may already have a favorite devotional book or something else from the web, but if you are looking for something new, check out Five Master Patterns like the one above. It is written by a current IMB staff member and former colleague of Pastor Glenn. Click here to subscribe
Special Offering for a Special Friend
Before Thanksgiving, the Wednesday night prayer meeting hosted a new friend from South Asia. We heard the testimony from the person who inspired the writing of The Camel, the book that describes the bridge for sharing Jesus in a Muslim context using the Qur'an. In the midst of hearing Abdul's dynamic testimony, we learned about one of the first church planting movements in the Islamic world. We heard about Abdul's recent imprisonment on charges that were later learned to be false. During his seven weeks of incarceration, his land was raided and all of his cattle were stolen along with his fish farm. These were the primary support systems for the church planting and ministry training in Abdul's country. We also learned that during his seven weeks in prison, over 150 people came to faith in Christ and several people were healed from their illnesses.

TBC decided to take an offering to help Abdul replace these ministry support ventures. Now that the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering season comes to a close, we want to encourage you to give toward Abdul's ministry support need through the end of February. When you participate in this special offering, you can make your check out to TBC and mark Abdul's Ministry in the memo line.
Lottie Moon Christmas Offering
lottie
We have raised $16,195 of our $20,000 goal for this year's offering toward the national goal of $175 million. 100% of this offering goes overseas to support our missionary families. We hope you will continue to support our missions family in prayer each day. If you have not participated financially so far, it is not too late. We will receive LMCO through January.
What's Happening in the Youth Group?
kids
The youth are preparing for their winter retreat Jan 17-19 with David Busch, the worship leader from First Baptist Church of SF. David is an incredible musician, man of God, husband, and father of three little girls. This will be an incredible weekend experience for our youth. Parents, do your best to encourage your youth to be a part of this. Pastor Steve will be sending all the important details.
Dinners for Seven
meat-sandwich.jpg
Dinners for Seven return on Sunday, Jan 19th. We encourage you to sign-up as a host or participant in the Gallery this Sunday. Since we will have no evening service on that day, groups can gather for lunch after church or wait and meet for dinner. Group hosts are being enlisted. Each group will be able to decide their time and place. Hosts may invite those in the church they have not yet become acquainted with to join their group.
7th All Nations Union Prayer Conference
The world is coming to TBC as we host the 7th All Nations Union Prayer Conference on Sunday, Jan 26th, from 6-8 pm. Ministry leaders and music groups from a wide variety of nations will be featured including the 30 nations team from Taiwan, China, Japan, Israel, Romania, Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia, Iran, India, Pakistan, Filipino, Pacific Islands, Africa, Latin America, and other backgrounds, as well as the United States. Presentations will include prayer requests from each nation and intercessory prayer for revival among the nations and for the Good News that brings hope!

Master Violinist Maurice Sklar has been invited for a special performance along with the Korean Churches Union Choir. You are invited to attend this colorful and unifying event for Christians from all backgrounds and all others who are eager to experience God's love and to join in friendship, conversation, and prayer for a world in great need.
Super Sunday XLVIII
The Super Bowl is fast approaching and it is time to make plans for your big party on Sunday, Feb 2nd. We want to encourage you to get together with one or two TBC friends and then invite some non-church friends to join you. Sharing in this time of fellowship with introductions to other TBC folks might be the inspiration someone needs to join us for future activities at church, especially Easter events coming in April. Who knows, maybe the 49'ers will be back to play in the big game!
Potluck & Family Meeting
Make your favorite dish and join us for fellowship on Sunday, Feb 9th, at 5:30 pm. Our meal will be followed by our quarterly business session where we will discuss a variety of items including an update on our building plans.
University of Life begins February 16th
Our next installment of University of Life begins on Feb 16th. Two of the class offerings are set. Susan Butler will be leading a Raising Deep Roots workshop on how parents and grandparents can lead their children in home devotions. Glenn & Janet Prescott will lead The Daniel Plan: 40 days to leading a healthier life, Rick Warren's newest book. More details about the other two classes will be announced soon. University of Life session one will go for 4 weeks and then session two will begin on March 16 and offer 3 new classes. The Daniel Plan will span both sessions for 8 weeks.
