Tiburon Baptist Church

November 2013

The Tiburon Tidings eNewsletter

The Facilities Use, Planning And Remodeling Committee is calling us together as a church by hosting a variety of activities over the next two weeks. We seek God's will regarding decisions about our future as we review our current master plan for our property and facilities. This is a major undertaking of God-size proportions. We must not venture out on our own simply because we think this is a good idea. We must allow Him to lead us if we are to move forward. Here is a glimpse of what lies ahead over the next two weeks.

On Friday, Nov 8, we are being asked to fast and pray for 24 hours. When you wake up on Friday, begin by drinking plenty of liquids, preferably water or fruit juice. Avoid sugar or caffeinated drinks if possible. Stay hydrated throughout the day. During regular meal times, spend that time in prayer asking God for what He would have us do in regard to remodeling and updating our facilities. Ask Him to lead us as we determine how we will be good stewards of our facilities for future generations. When you wake on Saturday morning, break the fast with a hearty breakfast.

On Sunday, Nov 10, we will gather at 5 pm for a time of review of the current master plan that has grown out of our time with the Building God's Way group last spring. We will review drawings and renderings of what might be possible should we be led to move ahead.

On Wednesday, Nov 13, we will gather at 6:30-7:15 pm for a time of corporate prayer.

On Friday, Nov 15, we will once again spend a 24-hour period of prayer and fasting as described above.

Then on Sunday, Nov 17, we will gather at 5 pm for a time of reflection to express what we have heard from the Lord. This time will help us determine if we might embrace this master plan, a portion of it, or none of it. If we decide to move ahead in some way, this will launch us toward what we as a body have determined to be the direction the Lord is leading us.

They said to me, Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire. When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Then I said: Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's family, have committed against you.

You may want to reread and pray these words from Nehemiah as you walk through this experience.
And when you fast . . . .
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls us to the regular observance of acts of righteousness. These spiritual disciplines should become a regular part of balancing our spiritual diet. There are three mentioned in Matthew 6. The first is prayer and the second is giving; very few people even question these disciplines.  In verse16, Jesus says when you fast . . . as if it were to be a regular part of our Christian life. However, it is one of the least practiced and most neglected of the spiritual disciplines.

There was a fasting insert in the bulletin this past week. If you didn't get home with it, click for a digital copy. There are other copies available in the gallery. You will also find a series of articles that have been compiled and placed on the TBC website under the Disciplines heading entitled Guidelines to Fasting. We hope you will join us on these two important days as we seek the Lord's direction for our immediate future.
Youth & Other Miscellaneous Youth Stuff
The youth invite the whole church to come out on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving for the annual Turkey Bowl. This has become a church-wide event of fun and fellowship at Country Club Bowl on 88 Vivian Street in San Rafael. The King & Queen of the Turkey Bowl will be crowned that night. Look for details coming from our youth and make plans to bring the whole family.
Lottie Moon Christmas Offering

November begins our 5-week emphasis on international missions. Last Sunday we heard from Donald & Martha H. as they continue in the appointment process with hopes of being on the field by next summer. We will hear from Stephen James on Nov 10, Tim & Jin C. on Nov 17, and Anne Dent on Dec 1. Our week of prayer is scheduled for Dec 1-7. We ask you to prayerfully determine how you will support our goal of raising $20,000 for this year's offering toward the national goal of $175 million. 100% of this offering goes overseas to support our missionary families.
Special Offering for a Special Friend
A few weeks ago, the Wednesday night prayer meeting hosted a new friend from South Asia. We heard the testimony from the person who inspired the writing of The Camel, the book that describes the bridge for sharing Jesus in a Muslim context using the Qur'an. In the midst of hearing Abdul's dynamic testimony, we learned about one of the first church planting movements in the Islamic world. We heard about Abdul's recent imprisonment on charges that were later learned to be false. During his seven weeks of incarceration, his land was raided and all of his cattle were stolen along with his fish farm. These were the primary support systems for the church planting and ministry training in Abdul's country. We also learned that during his seven weeks in prison, over 150 people came to faith in Christ and several people were healed from their illnesses.

TBC has determined that in addition to our LMCO offering, we will also take an offering to help Abdul replace these ministry support ventures. If you would like to participate in this special offering, you can make your check out to TBC and mark Abdul's Ministry in the memo line.
Thanksgiving Service & Harvest Dinner
One of the favorite events of the year is the annual Thanksgiving service to be followed by our Harvest Dinner. We will gather on Sunday, Nov 24, beginning at 5 pm. Tickets for the dinner are $5 for ages 13 and above. 12 and under are free. Invite a friend for some wonderful food and fellowship as we gather to give thanks to God for all of the blessings of life.

Wisdom

If Jesus could have accomplished all He came to do without fasting, why would He fast? The Son of God fasted because He knew there were supernatural things that could be released only that way. How much more should fasting be a common practice in our lives?
