FALL HARD SCRAMBLE BROWN BAG

CLT members enjoyed a beautiful fall morning hike on the Clemson Hard Scramble Property on Saturday, September 21st!  The tour of the property, led by Land Protection Director, Mary Crockett, provided members with a close-up tour of this historic property that borders the Wateree River in Camden. During the excursion, members were treated to several scenic areas which had once been pasture and farmland with many different types of hardwoods including Ironwood.  Everyone learned how to spot poison ivy vines and identify various types of ferns by looking at their leaves. Hikers also spotted several animal tracks, including deer and raccoon. As we approached our lunch spot along the river, we were greeted by bunches of Yellow Crown-Beard flowers in full bloom Mary saved the best surprise for the last stop of our journey - a look at a bald eagle's nest high atop a towering pine on the property. We saw evidence of the eagle's past meals below the nest on the ground, along with a few feathers, which prompted a discussion of the feathers we had seen throughout the day.
We thank all of our CLT members who were able to share the property tour with us and send a special welcome to our three new members who joined us for the morning!

Packing a Better Brown Bag.....

Over the years, we've had the opportunity to pick up some great tips on packing brown bag lunches from our veteran "Brown Baggers" during our CLT outings.  We thought we'd share a few of our favorite tips with you....

  • Make use of a Mason Jar for any of the following: null
    • Pack a vegan salad in a mason jar with the dressing on the bottom. When you are ready for lunch, simply shake it up and enjoy.
    • Tired of packing a plastic water bottle? Enjoy your brown bag beverage in a lidded mason jar.
    • Make your own yogurt parfait by layering fruit and yogurt in a mason jar.
  • Freeze your water bottle to keep your lunch cool. By then end of the hike, your water will be just the right temperature to enjoy.
  • Cut down on waste and add seasonal color to your brown bag by utilizing cloth napkins as colorful placemats and replacements for paper napkins for your brown bag. null
  • Craving a sliced apple for your brown bag,

but don't want it to turn brown by lunch time? Simply slice your apple and then place the slices back together to form the apple and secure with a rubber band.
  • Make your PB & J the best it can be! Layer peanut butter on both slices of bread before placing jelly in the middle - no more soggy bread!
  • Consider packing a camp stool or collapsible chair for the brown bag, or throw in a plastic-coated table cloth for a dry spot on the ground.
  • Go easy on the environment and use reusable plates, utensils and remember to recycle by taking a few used grocery bags and separating your garbage into recyclable categories using the bags.
