I've heard from so many, that their two favorite seasons are Fall and Spring. It's true, that each season has it's beauty and our reasons for which one we like best are as varied as the colors that we see around town this time of the year. I have to think, though, that it is the transforming qualities of Spring that lead us to think of renewal, rejuvenation and rejoicing! The long winter's blanket of snow has been thrown back and Spring has jumped out of it's warm bed and is showing us the splendor that she has been saving up for us during these last months. Gone are the cobwebs that accumulated during the long, dark nights. Now is the time for putting into action those things that had to wait until this moment. From the time the Earth brought forth it's regeneration, there has been hope. Hope of better things. What better time to plant seeds in the minds of our listeners that instill thoughts of making their world a better place. More importantly, the role they could play in making such a world. If we plant such seeds, who knows where their imaginations will take them? It just might be a world that we would also love.
Through the art of oral storytelling, Spellbinders®, an award-winning non-profit organization, enhances literacy, builds inter-generational community and develops character. |
MCS WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS | |
Submitted by Constance Holland
In March we had two storytellers. Charles Thompson, one of our newest tellers, told the story of Strawberries. This is a Cherokee folktale that gives an idea of how strawberries came into the world. The story involves first man and first woman who after living together compatibly for a long time have a quarrel and first woman leaves. After a short time first man realizes she is not coming back and he is sad. He is visited by a passing spirit who asks if he will fight again if first woman comes back. After he assures the spirit that he would not the spirit endeavors to help first man find first woman who is traveling away from their home at a speed at which, only an angry woman would walk. The key to bringing these two together again turns out to be the creation of strawberries, thereafter known as the fruit of love. This story can be found on the Spellbinders Resource Center story list.
The second story was an animated version of Fin MacCoul vs. Culhullen, an Irish folktale, that was told by Constance Holland. It seems that long ago in Ireland, when giants populated the island, one named Culhullen longed to hold the title of Toughest Giant of all. He intended to gain this title by fighting all the giants in Ireland, but the only one he could not beat was Fin MacCoul, who was never where Culhullen was and thus Culhullen couldn't fight him. Now giants all had a power, located somewhere in their bodies, as well as great strength and Fin and Culhullen both tried to use their powers to their advantage. In the long run, however, Fin was successful in defeating Culhullen because he had the support and help of his intelligent wife, Oona. How they manage to defeat Culhullen, however, always brings about a gasp and then laughter from audiences of any age. This story can be found in many books of Irish folktales.
Thank you to all who tell stories! It's so enjoyable to be able to be the listener for awhile. Also, we appreciate our January tellers, Diana Landis and her sharing on how she tells her story about Dolphins. To Linda Lynch and her "Troll Story". Our thanks to the February tellers, Lorna McIlnay and her audience participation story of "The Queen with the Cold, Cold Heart" and to Linda Bishop for sharing the story of "Rainbow Crow". You all do a great job!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
-
A reminder that Beaconfest is fast approaching! Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Two Rivers Convention Center is the date. Scott Fairbanks has the list of volunteers. Contact him for your time to work the booth.
- A new Treasurer is needed for the Board beginning in August 2016. Penny Stewart will provide training for the person in this position, which includes fundraising training. Contact Penny or any Board member if you are interested. Thank you, Penny for your time you have given! You have done a great job!
- There was discussion on the Happy Jar that is passed around at each meeting. As it is important that we know each other, there are some of us that forget our badges from time to time, making it a challenge to put faces to names! The original intent of the jar was to jog our memories to wear our badges. It has since morphed into a means whereby some contributed to the jar, out of their own free will, and shared some happy news as well. This by no means was intended to be an obligation for anyone to feel they needed to contribute! Feel free to continue to share your stories, though, no contribution needed!
- A committee has been formed that will consider how to spend some of the money in our chapter's assets to benefit the continuing education of our Spellbinders. Thanks to the Horizon Sunrise Rotary club in their donation of funds for this endeavor. The committee members are Mary Ann Janson, Constance Holland, Ruthmary Allison and Charles Thompson.
- Welcome to April Hart who is now the District 51 Liaison for us!
