2016
Hello to you and a new year filled with promise and new opportunities!  Having just come off from the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it may seem the pace will slow down a bit.  It may also seem difficult to find motivation.  Funny where the inspiration comes from sometimes.  I was recently watching the Disney movie, "Saving Mr. Banks".  I have watched this before, but this time I was struck by the theme of the story.  I became completely taken in by the scene near the end of the movie (I hope I not the spoiler here but I feel it's fitting).  Walt Disney is having a conversation with P. L. Travers, the author of "Mary Poppins".  After revealing a particular episode in his life growing up, he hits on why storytelling was so important to him and why he felt Mrs. Travers had an obligation to share her story with the world.  "Storytellers give hope to the listeners, it's what Storytellers do!",  Mr. Disney emphasized.  It struck me how poignant and relevant that statement is to what we do!  He went on to say, and I paraphrase, "Even if the hero doesn't always win, it is the strength of the hero that it victorious!".  So, if I may add to the conversation, If you're feeling like what you do doesn't matter, take heart.  What you do IS important because "It's what you do!"

Through the art of oral storytelling, Spellbinders®, an award-winning non-profit organization, enhances literacy, builds inter-generational community and develops character.

Announcements

  • Our SPECIAL EVENT is quickly approaching!  New Emerson Elementary, Monday, January 25, 2016 - Wednesday, January 27, 2016.  Contact Ingrid deLeland ASAP if you have any changes to your schedule.
  • Karen Hurst demonstrated the correct way to enter storytelling information on the Statistics sheet screen and explained the importance of our input.  If you have any questions for Karen, please be concise with your request in order for her to respond in kind to your particular request.  Karen will be sending out an email with instructions on how to download and print for those who would like a hard copy for their records.
  • Judi Sammons shared the results of the "Gratitude Practice" she used with her family this year.  If you would like to try this, contact her.  It sounds like fun!
  • Anne Saunders has Volunteer Forms which need to be filled out for each school, special event, shadowing, subbing opportunity that you have.  It is necessary to make these available to each event you tell stories at as it protects you and the event organizers and assists in allowing our organization to be seen as an important asset to our community.
  • Annette Ferriole sent a sheet around to sign for those that participated in telling stories relevant during Conflict Resolution Month.  She will send the results in to be included in statewide stats that are being compiled.
  • As announced a few months ago, I (Pam Hurd) am looking to step down from working on the Newsletter at the end of this school year.  May, 2016, will be the last issue of the Newsletter of this school year.  If there is no one to continue with this, there will be no more Newsletter!  I have really enjoyed working on our Newsletter, but there are other things in life that I would like to pursue.  If you are interested in taking over this project, please see me ASAP.  I am happy to walk you through the process.

Tellers - You Are Valued!

It may come as no surprise to you that the Mesa County Spellbinders board of directors' wish to make your time and experiences as tellers the best it can be.  Yet, we are no mind readers.  So, if you, as a teller, have a concern about how you are doing with your own telling style/way, placement with a school and/or relationship with a particular teacher, please feel free to reach out and discuss your concern with one of your trainers.  Again, your personal success is a priority and we support you.

Your trainer...who is that?  Every person, as a volunteer for Mesa County Spellbinders, participates in a professional training series that is guided and directed by one of our chapter's four professionally trained storytellers.  Once you complete your participation in this series of trainings, you are made official as a Mesa County Spellbinder, a storyteller.  Afterwards you are placed with a mentor who helps you transition into getting a classroom of your own...and these mentoring sessions helps you as a teller to become familiar with our placement and volunteering processes.  Your trainers are there for you as you develop in your storytelling experiences.
