So now the countdown is on. I will spare you the actual days till the "Big Day" because why state the obvious? Frankly, I think the countdown actually begins at the Summer Solstice when the days begin their slow descent to getting shorter plus the fact that Christmas decorations begin popping up in stores before school starts, but that's me. For some time now we have been bombarded with ads for "stuff". The y're everywhere and sometimes under the guise that acquiring such stuff will bring happiness, peace, even the Christmas Spirit! Maybe such things do bring a semblance of these things, but how long does it last? It is my impression that there is more to sustaining happiness, peace and the Christmas Spirit than through tangible acquisitions. When you walk into the classroom, what is the reaction you get? I will go out on a limb here and guess that all those pairs of eyes light up and gasps of "The Storyteller is here!" greet you when you walk through that door. I will also go so far to say that this is the same reaction when those students receive any kind of gift, no matter what time of the year it is! You have a gift and your willingness to share that gift is more beneficial than any store-bought stuff can offer. Thank you for your willingness to keep the Spirit of Christmas on-going, not only through this season, but throughout the year!
Through the art of oral storytelling, Spellbinders®, an award-winning non-profit organization, enhances literacy, builds inter-generational community and develops character. |
MCS WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS | |
Submitted by Mary Lou Palmer
Judi Sammons gave us an update about her wonderful, Leonberger
dog, Nala, the lovable Friendship Ambassador, who visits the Veterans hospital regularly and also pays a visit to her Spellbinders classes in May. This is a great treat for th e children, and Nala relishes every moment! When Judi tells a story, she wears something that is a clue to the story and asks the children to look for it. Out of an invisible pocket she pulls a key and suggests to the children to lock their mouths, open their ears and listen deeply for what is important, then she rings the Tibetan bowl which tells her through its beautiful tones, just which story she should tell!
In a beautifully embroidered Chinese jacket, Judi told "The Wise Woman and the Sky", the tale of a little old woman who knew exactly how to help when the villagers said that "holes" began appearing in the sky. How is the sky saved, how does the little boy help? How does the story end? "We will have to wait and see"!!
Thank you, Judi for sharing this sweet and wise story with us!
(Editor's note: The story that Judi told is retold by Jane Manners Illustrated by Daniel Powers, published by Rigby. As it has been difficult to find this particular version, the link listed below is to the short story. If you are interested in the version that Judi told, she would have better information on where to find.)
We look forward to great fun and lively positive energy when Ruthmary Alison tells us a story! She invited us to join in with chanting verse, movement imagination and laughter as she told: "Chew Your Rock Candy", about a little girl who skinned her knee and ran out of bandaids so she went to see the wise woman gathering neighbors along the way. They "tiptoed, tiptoed down the road" encountering a monster, working together to meet the challenge and vanquish their fears.
Cheers to all of you Spellbinders who give so generously of yourselves to share the Wonder of Story!
The Season is upon us as we watch time Sail
A Merry Christmas to All, and to All a GOOD TALE!!
