MCS WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS

Submitted by Mary Lou Palmer

Penny Stewart Penny Stewartled our September Workshop solo, and told a remarkable personal story  in recognition of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

In the Spring of 2008, Penny, along with other members  of her church, volunteered to travel to Louisiana and Mississippi to offer their assistance with cleanup efforts in the aftermath of that horrific disaster.

Penny told of staying in dorms with volunteers from all over the United States, helping on crews in the food tents serving 2000 meals per day, of seeing unbelievable destruction. The crew removed wet, moldy drywall, linoleum , paneling and roofing from the homes of people like  Gary and Sunshine, strong, good people who miraculously survived the storm and shared amazing stories of their own, including seeing a Seal bobbing out in the water who had survived and been displaced from an area Aquarium. Everywhere, there were heartbreaking and strange  sights..contents of entire homes awash at sea, pieces of metal and glass scattered all about.

Penny's story of her experience, told with humanity and compassion and sprinkled lightly with her wonderful sense of  humor certainly added greatly to our understanding of the reality of that horrendous event.

Thank you so much Penny for sharing your impactful and important story with us.

                                        Barbara Mack
Barbara Mack told a sweet little story called The Poor Little Tailor which is actually a blending of other little tales.  After years of sewing for others, the little tailor saves just enough money to buy a piece of wool to make himself a fine overcoat.  He wears the coat happily until it is worn out, and thereafter he finds many incarnations for the dwindling usable fabric...a vest, a cap , a bow-tie, a button, until each is "all worn out!" until at last, it becomes a....Story! and, as we all know, " Stories Never wear out!"  Barbara's use of little drawings of the items in her story added to its charm. Thank you for so cheerfully telling us this story Barbara!

  • "Go Bananas for Spellbinders" is right around the corner!  All the fun happens on this Wednesday, October 7, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Bananas Fun Park.  All the tickets have been picked up, so it will be exciting to see the results of sales!  A big "Thank You" to Scott Fairbanks and all the helpers for the time and effort you have put into planning this event!  If you need more tickets or info, contact Scott.  You know you will have fun!
  • Constance Holland introduced our new Spellbinder members.  Welcome to Joan Anderson, Teresa Bou-Matar, Thomas Brown, David Foster, Donna Portice, Charles Thompson and Sandra Whitton.  Constance also read a card from Pat Malone, who we know will be successful in what he chooses to do in his new home.
  • Annette Ferriole announced that October is Conflict Resolution Month.  She suggested that we consider telling one story to our listeners regarding peace-making. The following link features the book, Once Upon A Time... by Elisa Davy Pearmain and has stories about cooperation, friendship, perseverance, respect, responsibility and other character qualities. For more information click on the following link;  Conflict Resolution Month.
  • If you are interested in adding to your list of schools for telling stories, contact Cindy Beckage.  To check the list of openings, click on the following link, List of school openings 2015-16.
  • There was discussion on school libraries as being a venue for telling stories.  Typically, we tell in the classrooms.  Wherever the place, our policy states that the teacher of the class be present during our presentations.
  • Continue to check the sign-up sheets if you are interested in helping facilitate our meetings, bring snacks or tell a story.
  • Mary Lou Palmer does a wonderful job at submitting articles on those that tell stories.  Alas, all good things must come to an end.  She has decided that it is time to "retire" from the position. If you are interested in taking over this spot, please contact Mary Lou and she will be glad to assist you with this transition.  This will be effective starting with our November meeting.  Thank you for all you have done Mary Lou!
  • Exciting news!  Penny Stewart has secured a space for us to broadcast our Spellbinder group at the Senior Fair!  Mark your calendars for Friday, October 23, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Two Rivers Convention Center.  Penny will have more details at the meeting.  If you are not able to attend the meeting, but would like to help, contact Penny.
