As always, whether at the beginning of the "Spellbinders Season" or nearing the end of each school year, it is great fun to listen to the stories that our fellow Spellbinders share at the workshops!

Mary Lou Palmer told the story of Strega Nona by Tomie de Paola. Strega Nona (Grandma Witch) lived in the region of Calabria, Italy. She was a strange little woman who made spells and potions and her life's work was helping the people of her village with all their problems and troubles. Strega Nona was growing older and required a helper. Big Anthony came to work for her and one day discovered her secret: a Magic Pot that cooked Pasta all by itself! One day when Strega Nona was away visiting her friend, Big Anthony said the magic words he'd heard her sing and HE got the pot to cook pasta all by itself!! He invited all of the doubting townspeople to come and eat! Too bad that he didn't know the

Val Thompson believes that it is important to remember and share the songs of our childhood with the newest generation. At her 16-year-old grandson's suggestion, she sang "The Ugly Duckling" from the 1952 Danny Kaye movie" Hans Christian Andersen". Val also lists "High Hopes" and" Swing on a Star" as some of her favorites for kids. She tells stories to kindergarten classes at Lincoln OM Fruitvale and Dos Rios Thank you for so pleasantly sharing this song with us Val! Anne Saunders made a special request for Elizabeth Clark to come and tell her original version of The Tortoise and the Hare. We are so lucky she did! The Hare has a nervous lisping voice and is a ssssstupendously boastful braggart who has very little concern for others. " Just Ssssay GO!!" He comes to race the Tortoise who moves along slowly " bommm bi-di bommm," with purposeful intent and mindfully enjoying the lovely world around him:
..." Wow.............I..................am.....................going............ faaaast!"
Full of himself and taking things for granted , the Hare takes a nap and is shocked to find that he has lost the race to Tortoise! Children love to mimic the voices and sing along as she tells this take on an instructive and entertaining wise old fable.
Thank You for sharing this story Elizabeth, your lively gestures and funny voices make this tale hilarious and so memorable! Elizabeth tells stories to 3rd and 4th grades at Pomona and Tope. The Tortoise and the Hare is one of Aesop's Fables and is numbered 226 in the Perry Index. The account of a race between unequal partners has attracted ...
