We did it!  Our stories that we have worked so hard on and shared have lead our listeners through many journeys and places they may not ever had the opportunity to experience otherwise.  As enjoyable as the experience is for us, we,too, need times of refreshing and that time is now!
You have earned some time to take advantage of some respite for awhile.  That being said, your senses may still be in action.  They will continue taking in all the sights and sounds that you encounter over the next weeks and storing them up for the time you will need to recall them when you take up your storytelling journey again. So, relax and enjoy yourself knowing that when you meet that new set of faces you will have the confidence and assurance that you will be just as effective if not more, in your storytelling abilities!
I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting and hearing all the stories that you have to share!

MCS WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS

Submitted by Mary Lou

As always, whether at the beginning of the "Spellbinders Season" or nearing the end of each school year, it is great fun to listen to the stories that  our fellow Spellbinders share at the workshops!

Mary Lou Palmer

Mary Lou Palmer told  the story of  Strega Nona by Tomie de Paola. Strega Nona (Grandma Witch)  lived in the region of Calabria, Italy. She was a strange little woman who made spells and potions and her life's work was helping the people of her village with all their problems and troubles. Strega Nona was growing older and required a helper. Big Anthony came to work for her and  one day discovered her secret: a Magic Pot that cooked Pasta all by itself!  One day when Strega Nona was away visiting her friend, Big Anthony said the magic words he'd heard her sing and HE got the pot to cook pasta all by itself!! He invited all of the doubting townspeople to come and eat! Too bad that  he didn't know the

"incrediente segreto"

...to blow 3 kisses to stop the pot from cooking.  Mama Mia! The town and its people  would  have  been  swallowed  up  by  mounds  of flowing pasta..had not Strega Nona returned  just in time to save the day!  Mary Lou  tells stories at Clifton Elementary Special Ed classes.

Val ThompsonVal Thompson  believes that it is important to remember and share the songs of our childhood with the newest generation. At her 16-year-old grandson's suggestion, she sang   "The Ugly Duckling" from the 1952 Danny Kaye movie" Hans Christian Andersen". Val also lists "High Hopes" and" Swing on a Star" as some of her favorites for kids. She tells stories to kindergarten classes at Lincoln OM Fruitvale and Dos Rios  Thank you for so pleasantly sharing this song with us Val!

Elizabeth ClarkAnne  Saunders  made  a special request  for Elizabeth Clark to come and  tell  her original  version of The Tortoise and the Hare.  We are so lucky she did!    The Hare  has a nervous lisping voice and is a  ssssstupendously boastful  braggart  who has very little concern for others. " Just Ssssay GO!!"  He comes to race the Tortoise who moves along  slowly " bommm bi-di  bommm,"  with  purposeful  intent  and mindfully  enjoying  the   lovely  world around him:

 ..." Wow.............I..................am.....................going............       faaaast!"

Full of himself and taking things for granted , the Hare takes a nap and  is shocked to find that he has lost the race to  Tortoise! Children love to mimic the voices and sing along as she tells this take on an instructive and entertaining wise old fable.

Thank You for sharing this story Elizabeth, your lively gestures and funny voices make this tale hilarious and so memorable!   Elizabeth tells stories to 3rd and 4th grades at Pomona and Tope.

The Tortoise and the Hare is one of Aesop's Fables and is numbered 226 in the Perry Index. The account of a race between unequal partners has attracted ...

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS
spring-raingear.jpg

  • Penny presented a Treasurer's Report itemizing the necessities that keep our group up and running.  The Sunrise Rotary Club, our "Happy Jar" as well as  individuals and various groups help keep up the majority of our funding.  If anyone has the opportunity to speak to a group about Spellbinders, mentioning the importance of their contribution may bring in additional funds to our organization.
  • Liaisons are needed for coordinating storytellers with schools.  Those in this position are necessary for expediency in handling issues.  At this time two volunteers are needed.  These very important positions help to establish a good rapport  between our organization and the school district.  This keeps our organization strong and thriving while establishing good communication with the schools.  It is important that our organization be visible outside of the classroom and coming into contact with school staff through attending staff meetings, contact the Principal, etc., would be worth considering.  Contact Cindy Beckage if interested.  She will be handing out Liaison Folders at the May meeting.
  • The First Annual Go Bananas for Spellbinders - Goofy Golf, Silly Stories and Tall Tales Mini-Golf Tournament fundraiser will be held on October 7, 2015.  Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. with tournament play running from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  It was  suggested that the Liaisons could possibly attend a school staff meeting before school starts in August to generate interest for this event within the classrooms.
  • MaryAnn announced the dates for the 26th Annual Timpanogos Storytelling Festival which will be Friday, September 4, 2015 through Saturday September 5, 2015 under the shadow of the majestic Timpanogos Mountain located in Orem, Utah. Two days prior, from Wednesday, September 2, 2015 through Thursday, September 3, 2015, the Conference will be conducted.  More information on the Festival and lodging will be forthcoming as details emerge.  For more information go to Timpanogos Festival
  • At our May 14th meeting, we will have a special presentation conducted by Jeremy Franklin.  Jeremy is a former Mesa County Spellbinder and is now a Professor in theater at CMU.

NEWS FROM NATIONAL
Thank you Barb and Diana for bringing back this information!

Upcoming Opportunity!

25-Hours-of-Storytelling will take place from 4:25 pm on Oct 2nd to 5:25 on Oct 3rd at Denver's Union Station in Denver.  We want as many Spellbinders storytellers as possible to participate.  There are no auditions for these slots as this is about publicity and celebration, not about a well crafted, balanced storytelling performance (as that would be impossible over that long of a time period).  We are still working on the definition of storytelling with Guinness, but it will likely be some subset of fairy tales, folk tales, myths and por quoi tales.  Anyone who wants to participate, please click here.  Sandy Magnuson of Larimer Spellbinders will start to put together a timeline and get it out to volunteers.

  • I hope your Chapter plans an event for October.  The earlier the date is set the better.  To be included in the promotional materials, the date, time and location needs to be firm by August 1st.
