Something you missed if you are not on Facebook or have not liked our page yet is a great article you can read by clicking here.

I posted it with the following comment:

Happiness-expanding activity alert! As you might know I am an advocate for sharing the power of Story. Sharing personal stories is a big part of that!

I would have a slight disagreement with not writing them down, however. I believe sharing stories of your life experiences with the younger generation & beyond are important...very important. If you don't want to write them down, tell them to someone who might want to.

However, take the time to do some of these things regardless!

Be happy!

Mesa County Spellbinders Workshop Schedule

THIS

Thursday, January 9th
at
Mesa County Library
9:15 to 11:15 a.m.
It will be in the Community Room on the main level.  The doors open at 9:00 a.m.  There is parking behind the library at 6th and Grand Ave as well the front parking lot

Please check this document to find out who is coordinating the workshop, bringing snacks, and telling stories!

(NOTE: For some reason the January date on this list is INCORRECT.  The correct date is above.)

Also note:  If you have announcements or something you would like to share at the meeting please email or call the individual facilitating the workshop no later than the Tuesday before the meeting.  This will help us keep the meeting on schedule.

Thanks!!

ALERT!!

We discussed at the last workshop that it would be very helpful if everyone remembered to wear their name tag.

This helps us get to know each other better, especially with new people joining us.

To encourage you in this endeavor we will have a bank handy for you to drop in a quarter if you do not wear your name tag!  We will then use this money to offset refreshment costs, etc.

So, bring and wear that name tag or bring a quarter!

Check out Announcements and Reminders to find out about "Happy Endings Bucks!"

Transforming memories into stories!

Did your family have New Year's Eve Traditions when you were growing up?

Is there a special meal that was part of New Year's Day tradition at your house?  Did you continue that tradition?

Do you make New Year resolutions?  Did you ever keep any of them?

When you started your own family, did you start new traditions?

**********************

As for me, it's not New Year's Day unless I smell Pork and Sauerkraut cooking in the Crock Pot!

Traditions make us feel loved and secure.  I think that's why we continue them.

Hope your new year is filled with all good things!

PROFILES IN STORYTELLING -Linda Lynch
Submitted by Judi Sammons

The first month of 2014, a brand new year brings us a brand new Spellbinder.

Linda Lynch has just begun to discover the joy of telling stories in classrooms and has already seen that 'look.'  The 'look' when children's eyes glaze over and they slip into their images of the story that they are listening to.  She loves the 'look.'  Linda is telling to first graders at Dos Rios and considers herself a natural storyteller.

A little about Linda may reveal some of our possible surprise connections.  She was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes.  She attended college at the University of California Davis and studied Horticulture and Business. In the early years Linda had a landscape business and eventually, she and John, her husband, became grape farmers in Sonoma County for 25 years.

After raising three children they "retired" in 2010 and migrated to Grand Junction, Colorado.  The parenthesis around "retired" is because they currently run a Property Management company which keeps the two of them as busy as ever.

They have spent many summers vacationing in Baja, California/Mexico.  Travel has included most of the United States and recently a tour of Budapest, Slovakia and Germany.

Linda has a variety of fun very creative hobbies and interests which deepen and enrich her life.  She loves to garden, read, make cards via stamping and watercolor; embroidery, and her newest endeavor is learning Swedish Weaving.  One additional hobby which keeps her hopping has been serving as a 4H Leader in the Poultry division. Every chance she gets Linda likes to show her Silver Spangled Bantam chickens, "chickens with a real personality!"

Linda had been looking for just the right place to spend some of her 'volunteer' energy when she met Janice Koppang and listened to her tell a story for the Sons of Norway lodge meeting.  She visited a Spellbinder Workshop, took the training, and the rest is history.

One of Linda's favorite wisdom quotes from Pooh Bear:  "I was going to change my shirt, but I changed my mind instead."

We are ever so pleased that you "changed your mind" and decided to become part of our Spellbinders group.  We know you will discover many joys along the way as you deepen your skills as a storyteller.  Your interesting history and life experiences will serve you well as you master the art of storytelling and build your confidence.

Welcome...Welcome Linda Lynch!!

Editor's Note:  I apologize for not having a photo of Linda.  I will try to gather pictures of all of our most recently trained tellers and share them next month.

MCS WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
Submitted by Mary Lou Palmer

What lovely Story Presents we received at our December workshop!

Susan Bilbo and LInda Pryor Linda Pryor brought us a lovely Christmas legend   How the Tiger Kitten got its markings. Linda learned the tale from a newspaper clipping she found among her mother's belongings. The  curious little kitten is present at the Nativity and is touched by the glow of the Christ Child. He forever after bears the mark of an M on his forehead to represent the Madonna.  There are other legends you can read about one of them here.

Thank you, Linda for telling this sweet story of the Nativity complete with the  dear lullaby you so beautifully sang for us!

Val Thompson told a really cute and humorous Christmas story of Val Thompson the Bear family, Papa Mama and little Bear as they hope to catch a glimpse of Santa on Christmas Eve. Little bear finds his parents doing the strangest things as he tries to stay awake to see Santa.

Hard as they try, they are not able to catch that jolly old fellow at his work! Val does a super Papa Bear voice! Thank you Val!  You can find the book I've Seen Santa! by David Bedford here.

Judi Sammons
told  Agatha's Feather Bed by Carmen Agra Deedy   Agatha is a wise old weaver with a small shop New York city. She helps a young customer learn that" everything  comes from something" That lesson also comes home to her again in the form of a small flock of rather bare geese appearing outside her apartment window. In Her kindness and and generosity, she creates a solution to their problem.

The story is full of funny little puns and idioms. Judi truly made this story her own, telling it in first person and even wearing a beautiful handwoven scarf 'from Agatha".  Thanks so much, Judi!

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS
piggy_bank_100.jpg Spellbinder business cards are now available to you. Get them at the meetings from Scott Fairbanks.

Remember to wear your name tag to the meeting.  (pay a 25 cent fine for not wearing it) :-)
We also began a new "Happy Endings Bucks" at each Workshop.  Folks who have something to celebrate or something they are grateful for put in a buck or two....or more to note the occasion.  The money collected will go into our operating account to offset costs of running the chapter.

Our Spellbinder library has been disbanded.  If you have books checked out, keep them, share or donate.

Karen will be sending out a survey via Survey Monkey to see if the chapter membership wants the Newsletter to continue to be published.  Please respond as soon as you receive it.  It is only one question so it won't take long.  The Board will decide whether or not to continue this service based on your input.  If the majority wish for it to continue Karen will request participation from other chapter members.  Keep this in mind for the future :-)
