Please check this document to find out who is coordinating the workshop, bringing snacks, and telling stories!

Also note:  If you have announcements or something you would like to share at the meeting please email or call the individual facilitating the workshop no later than the Tuesday before the meeting.  This will help us keep the meeting on schedule.

Thanks!!

ALERT!!

We discussed at the last workshop that it would be very helpful if everyone remembered to wear their name tag.

This helps us get to know each other better, especially with new people joining us.

To encourage you in this endeavor we will have a bank handy for you to drop in a quarter if you do not wear your name tag!  We will then use this money to offset refreshment costs, etc.

So, bring and wear that name tag or bring a quarter!

Twelve Days of Stories About Gratitude from National Spellbinders
Each day includes a statement by a supporter of Spellbinders.  Here is a link to the story on Day One and Judy Lloyd's comments.

Here is why
Spellbinders Storyteller Judy Lloyd pre-scheduled a gift:

"I love giving my time to be a Spellbinders storyteller but I also give money to support the Spellbinders organization because of the joy it has added to my life.

The training to be a storyteller, the newsletters, story sparks, story archives and the support from the Spellbinders Resource Center have value and meaning for me.  Wont you consider making a donation to Spellbinders."

(Note: you should also be receiving these through email if you are on National's email list.)

PROFILES IN STORYTELLING -Jeannie Smith
Jeannie Smith and her husband Matt
Jeannie with husband Matt
Submitted by Judi Sammons

This month we wish to shine the Profile Spotlight on one of our dedicated board members, Jeannie Smith, who contributes in two very important ways:  1. As the secretary of the board, 2. As the liaison for School District 51.  She creates the Minutes for the monthly meeting and takes care of any miscellaneous correspondence that may arise.  Jeannie is the perfect liaison with her ready smile and openly warm and friendly nature.  We appreciate the time and energy Jeannie offers up so willingly.

Jeannie spent her first 4 years in Wray, Colorado and went to Kindergarten in Oakley, Kansas. She claims that she loved to read so much that she spent most of her childhood with her head in a book. The rest of her life has been spent in Grand Junction. When asked what were her passions she responded: " I'm passionate about my family... I have four children: Madison 25, Austin 23, Carson 14 and Delani 11.  My husband is a commander with GJPD.  We love to go on hikes and camping and we hope to learn to ski this year."

To backtrack a few years in personal history Jeannie spent 20 years working at Albertson's in almost every capacity with her last eight years working as the bookkeeper, as well as, doing payroll and HR.  Jeannie seems to have a natural talent for wearing multiple hats in a variety of settings.

She graduated from Mesa State College in 1998, with a degree in History. Something most of us did not know about her was the work she completed for her senior thesis was published in the Journal of the Western Slope. If you enjoy Grand Junction history, you might enjoy reading "Walter Walker and his fight against Socialism."

Jeannie has been employed by District 51 for the past five years in the Department of Communications and Community Partnerships.  Her main responsibility is coordinating the Volunteer Program, but she also does work in several other departments as needed.

She has traveled to Florida, Washington D.C., Tennessee, and most of the Western states.  As a history buff, Jeannie really liked seeing Washington D.C. and all of the historical places she had only read about as a child. She also enjoys visiting family in California and going to the "happiest place on earth, hee hee Disneyland."

Her favorite hobbies include scrapbooking and crafts.  "My oldest son can never move back home because his room has been turned into a scrapbooking/craft room!"

Jeannie's introduction to Spellbinders came at the same time that she started working for District 51.  Her younger kids were coming home with stories about these wonderful storytellers that came to their classroom at Appleton once a month. One day she visited Appleton and for the first time heard Mary Ann Janson tell a story and was blown away!  She was hooked, and now loves being on the Spellbinder Board to support the efforts of this vibrant organization!

In Jeannie's own words:  "I would like to thank all the devoted Spellbinders for their time and dedication to the students of District 51.  It is a huge commitment to tell each month in multiple classrooms and we are so grateful there are such creative people willing to do it.  Being on the board, I see how much effort and preparation is put into the fun stories you tell and I love to see the passion that each spellbinder has for their craft."  Jeannie we are also grateful for your generous gifts of time and expertise!

MCS WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
Submitted by Mary Lou Palmer

What a nice workshop we had in November!

Karen Hurst kicked off the story sharing part of our workshop with a story she wrote to celebrate Ruthmary Allison's contributions to our chapter.  Here is the text in case you missed the workshop.

Chuck Kornman told us  how he introduces himself to his young Chuck Kornman listeners. He tells them that he has some friends up valley who have a chicken who thinks he is a duck and his name is CHUCK! This always warms the young audience up in anticipation of one of his stories. Chuck also told  a funny story he has been developing. In this story he tells the kids about the bump on his head and  asks the children to choose which possible scenario is the reason for that bump. The children get to participate by giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down to  each explanation. It was fun for us  to play along also! Chuck said that he is thankful for his memory, and we can be thankful for his super imagination and enthusiasm!  He is not currently telling to any classes, but is looking forward to doing so again soon.  Thank you , Chuck, and here's a great big "Thumbs Up"  for you!

Mary Thompson told The Squeaky Door by Margaret Read Mcdonald. Getting to hear great stories each workshop is just the BEST!  Mary treated us to this sweet repetitive tale for bedtime. A little boy spends the night at Grandma's and is proud to be able to sleep alone in the big brass bed. He isn't quite as brave as he means to be and Grandma tries to help by bringing  in several friendly creatures to keep him company ,but the squeaky door persists in worrying him. Thank you Mary, for your fine storytelling and the great  sounding squeeeeaks,  meows, woofs, oinks whinneys and nightey night  smooches!

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS
godly-enter-key.jpg
Newsletter News

Karen requested that everyone be sure to review the information in the November Newsletter regarding Workshop and Newsletter Guidelines as well as guidelines for story selection, particularly during the holidays.

If you have not read this please go back to the November issue and review.

It was also stressed that the Spellbinders roster information is to be used ONLY for Spellbinder business.

Karen also requested that folks make a point to read each issue.  Especially Announcements and Reminders as there will often be valuable information shared.  It would also be a good idea to save the emails in a special folder in your email program so you have ready access to them for reference purposes.

Also remember that there is an archive link in the left column that gives you easy access to every Newsletter ever sent :-)

GV Magazine Poetry Contest for Kids

Janice Shepherd announced that GV Magazine is having a poetry contest for kids.  Since some grades are studying poetry she thought it would be cool to let the kids and teachers know that.

Also, be sure to send those stats to her every month!!

Storytelling Coordination

Janice Koppang requested that if you are telling to additional classes (other than the ones she officially assigned to you) to let her know so that her records are up-to-date.  Thanks!

Odds 'n Ends

*Laurie Kollasch shared an extra copy of the most recent magazine from the National Storytelling Network.  As a reminder you might want to become a member of the Rocky Mountain Storytelling group. If you do join, it will then offer you a 10% discount with the National Storytelling Network.  Check it out!

*We also discussed setting up a system for those telling stories to receive feedback and tips for telling from our seasoned tellers.  Stay tuned as we finalize this system.
