PROFILES IN STORYTELLING - Pam Hurd
Pam Hurd Submitted by Judi Sammons

This month's Profile welcomes Pam Hurd as one of our newest Spellbinder Members. Pam completed her training with Steve and Ruthmary and stepped into her first classroom in October 2012. The training and encouragement she received from Steve and Ruthmary built her confidence and enlightened her in regard to the many gifts of storytelling.

Pam tells stories to third graders at Chipeta Elementary. She has developed a close rapport with these children in a very short time and can sense when a story connects with them by how deeply they are absorbed in the tale. Also, when the children express their appreciation for a story Pam knows she has touched some part of their lives and that is a very satisfying feeling.

Pam was born in California and spent the majority of her early years in Apple Valley, Hesperia and Victorville. There were a few in-between years when she experienced living in Texas and Florida for a brief period of time. After graduating from high school in Victorville she made plans to attend college at Lubbock Christian College in Texas but before fulfilling that dream took a detour to make a move to Idaho where she met her husband and college was put on permanent hold.

The next chapter brought about a variety of work settings along with raising four children. Pam has driven school busses, worked for the post office and eventually took a position in the front office working for Moffat County Social Services in Craig, Colorado.

Four years ago and after the children were grown Pam and her husband turned their attention towards their future and that is when they moved to Grand Junction. She enjoys the many opportunities for recreation in and around this area like camping and hiking. These activities have revealed the beauty that Colorado offers to all of us.

In an attempt to prepare for retirement Pam developed a love/hate relationship with golf. It was during one of those outings that she met Janice Koppang and while they were dealing with 'scalping the landscape' Janice introduced the subject of Spellbinders. Pam was intrigued and decided to look into becoming a part of the group, as soon as, she was able to complete the project of getting her book "Switch Witch" published.

Pam has told a variety of different types of stories but is especially drawn to stories with humor and stories that include participation . Her wisdom words...."Just being yourself allows you to find your own storytelling talents." She enjoys the diverse techniques and interesting variety of stories offered within the group of Spellbinders that meet each month. She hopes that everyone who participates in Spellbinders get as much satisfaction out of their experiences as she has in such a brief period of time.

MCS WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
Submitted by Mary Lou Palmer

We heard three very different stories of Love at our Valentine's Day Workshop

Janice Hogue
Janice Koppang
told a  story called "Buttons" (It is a story from her repertoire of problem solving stories.)

"We are Undone!" says Papa  after the buttons on his breeches burst.

His wife enlists the help of of their three   daughters. Each sister vows to obtain new buttons for father in her own unique way.True Love and adventure follow! The most unusual approach to the problem turns out to be the successful one, leaving everyone living happily ever after. Thanks Janice for delightfully telling this sweet and humorous tale so well.

Steve Skoglund
Steve Skoglund
shore enuf in due time  picked a fine time to tell us about a High time when Once upon a time King Sun was a whole lot closer to the earth than he is these days!

A time when Brother Deer felt" a trouble in his min' and didn't know how to git rid of it"... he was in love.! In love with  King Sun's daughter! Deer needed the help of ol' Brer Rabbit and Spring Lizard who had to do some serious  cogitatin' to help remedy the situashun.

As always, the animals find a way to teach us about ourselves by explaining and reflecting human faults and virtues.   Hot diggity! Thanks for the great job sharing this wise and funny Uncle Remus story, Steve! You can find a great book of the complete collection at the link.  You can also get a Kindle version of just this story here.

Mary Ann Janson
Mary Ann Janson
told  the Cherokee tale" Legend of the First Strawberry". A story of First woman and First Man. After a quarrel, they feel anger and sadness. Woman, feeling afraid and hurt, runs away faster and faster.

Great Spirit tries to get her attention by manifesting  a beautiful  orchard before her, but she does not notice, so great is her pain. Man,lonely and sorrowful, chases after her.

Underneath their feet blooms a field of beautiful red fruit, strawberries, shaped like the human heart and tasting as sweet as Love itself. They learn the fullness of life, of forgiveness and Love. Thank you, Mary Ann for beautifully telling and signing this story with so much heart !

The link above will take you to the book by Joseph Bruchac.  You can also find this story in a book we've recommended a few times: Once Upon a Time: Storytelling to Teach Character and Prevent Bullying by Elisa Davy Pearmain.

You can also watch a YouTube Video of someone reading the story and showing the pictures!

Mary Ann used some beautiful ASL signs during her telling which enhanced the telling.  She told us about a great website that has a visual dictionary of ASL signs: Handspeak.  Check it out!

Note: when I was looking for the links for this story, I found a YouTube video of a James Bruchac (wonder if Joseph is his brother?)  It is another Native American tale which is about Gluskabe. There seem to be quite a few videos of Native American tales so check it out! (kjh)
