Vining Veggies!
Hi Kids,
Now that the weather has warmed up, it's a great time to plant your whole veggie garden! We can now concentrate on vegetable plants that prefer warmer weather. Like this week, we're focusing on vining vegetables - Watermelon, Pumpkins and Squash. These yummy veggies grow on vines so you need a bit of space to grow them - or a trellis so you can train them vertically! We hope you can join us!
This Week's Activity

This weekend at Kid's Club we are planting vining veggies! Choose between watermelon, pumpkin or butternut squash. Once your seeds germinate, you can plant your vining veggie can be planted outside in its biodegradable pot. We will also be making balloon markers so we remember what we've planted.

Kid's Club runs this Saturday & Sunday from
10am - 4pm and is FREE for kids of all ages!

Growing Vining Veggies

Growing vining vegetables takes a lot of space. If you don't have space you can use a trellis and grow them vertically! Vining veggies are heat lovers, so make sure to plant them in full sun. They also need rich, well-drained soil. Water consistently at the base of the plant (not on top of the leaves as that can lead to disease). When planting vining veggies, you need
to plant them about 1" deep in little hills. Plant 4-6 seeds per hill and then as the seeds come up, thin to 3 plants per hill. If you're planting more than one hill, make sure to space them about 6-8' apart.
Here's some info about the 3 choices of plants you have this week:
Jack o Lantern Pumpkin: orange, smooth & firm; takes 7-10 days for the plants to emerge from seed; 75 days to harvest.
Sugar Baby Watermelon: small, round & sweet (8" diameter); takes 5-10 days for seeds to germinate (plants to emerge); 75 days to harvest.
Waltham Butternut Squash: yellow flesh, small seed cavity, sweet flavour; takes 7-10 days to germinate; 85 days to harvest.
