Hey Kids,
Last weekend we had a blast planting Give Peas a Chance pots! That was a great planting craft for cool weather - as is the planting craft we're going to be doing this weekend!
Tomorrow, April 22 is EARTH DAY! Earth Day is a special day when we celebrate this amazing planet we live on and think about ways we can make it a better place to live! We think about ways we can reduce pollution, recycle, save water, save energy, protect plants and animals. There are a lot of great things you can do to celebrate Earth Day! You could play outside instead of inside! You could go for a picnic. You could leave the car at home and go for a walk or bike ride. You could have a Nature Scavenger Hunt - decide what you think you'll see outside, write it down, then see who can find those things first. You could plant a tree! AND you could plant a veggie garden...or part of one!
Radish Heads
This weekend at Kid's Club we're planting Radish Heads! Radishes are great for this craft because they germinate really quickly - that means that the plants start to sprout from the seeds within just a few days! Once your radish sprouts get a bit bigger you can plant them in your veggie garden!
Kid's Club runs Saturday & Sunday this weekend from 10am - 4pm.
Important Things to Know About Radishes
~Radishes are a very hardy, cool-season root vegetable. Although the leaves of the radish are edible, most people grow them to eat the peppery, crispy root that grows under ground.
~They mature quickly and are very easy to grow!
~ When planting seeds, you should sow them 1/2" deep and 1" apart.
~Eventually, you can thin them so that they are about 2" apart (yes, that means you pull out some radishes, but they grow much better if they have a little space!)
~Radishes like full sun, well-drained soil and consistent moisture.
~We are planting EARLY SCARLET GLOBE radishes. They are bright red on the outside, but white on the inside. They have a nice mild taste and are deliciously crispy!
~You'll know your radishes are ready to harvest in about 3-4 weeks after planting. At this time the roots will be about the size of a marble. Don't leave roots in the ground after they have matured.
