Hey Kids,
I hope you had a chance to come out and plant a lettuce bowl last weekend! It's great to be able to plant something that can survive outdoors in this cool weather!
Over the next few weeks at Canadale Kid's Club we'll continue to run a series of planting activities that focus on how to grow food...in your very own back yard, front yard or porch! If you come to every activity in the series, by the end, you could be growing your very own FULL VEGGIE GARDEN! Some of the food you'll learn about growing are:
*Potatoes (check!)
*Salad bowl vegetables (check!)
*Peas - give peas a chance!
*Beans - green, yellow & purple
*Herbal Tea plants
*Tomatoes
*Flowers - just because every garden needs some
*Vines- pumpkins, squash or watermelon
Watch our newsletters weekly to hear about the activity every weekend.
Give Peas a Chance! This weekend at Kid's Club we're PLANTING PEAS! Peas are an awesome cool crop vegetable that produce lots of sweet snappy veggies! Once you plant your pea seeds you can create a colourful trellis that will support your pea vine until you plant it outside or it gets too big!
Kid's Club runs Saturday & Sunday this weekend from 10am - 4pm.
Important Things to Know About Peas Planting Peas: ~Peas are a cool season crop, meaning they can tolerate cooler outdoor temperatures. They have a fairly limited growing season, but produce a lot of pods during that time! ~You can sow peas outdoors 4 - 6 weeks before the last spring frost (or, like we're doing, start them inside and plant them in the garden once we get a nice little vine coming up!) ~When you sow the seeds (in the garden or in a pot) they should be planted about 1" deep in rich (not dry) soil. Peas should be planted 2" apart. Caring for Peas: ~Peas prefer to grow in full to partial sun. ~They like to be planted in rich, moist soil, but it has to be well-drained. They don't like wet soil. So make sure you don't water them too much! ~ Peas are interesting because when they're planted they fix nitrogen into the soil. Because of this, you don't need to fertilize your peas (Nitrogen is found in fertilizer and makes GREEN things GROW!) ~Peas have delicate roots so make sure not to disturb the roots of your pea plant. Don't rake or hoe anywhere near them! ~The peas we're planting grow on a vine so they will need some sort of pole or trellis to grow up for support. Harvesting Peas - When can I eat them!?!?! ~You'll know your peas are ready to pick when the pod is plump, has a nice sheen, and is bright green. ~ Pick peas in the morning, once the dew has dried because that's when the peas will be crispiest! ~Make sure to use 2 hands when harvesting peas - one to hold the vine and one to pick the pod. ~Harvest often to encourage more pods to grow. ~Peas can be kept frozen, or they last about 5 days in the fridge!
