May 2013
Greetings!

We're ready for a full line up of incredible programs this summer. Core programs are filling up and we'll be on the road for a number of outreaches around the state.  If you haven't done so yet, give a shout out and make a contribution to our 2013 MLW Scholarship Fund which makes this amazing experience available to anyone regardless of ability to pay the full tuition.  Be sure to 'like' the MLW Facebook page to follow the fun all summer long!

And don't miss our newly designed website! The information is streamlined and the site features an online application and shopping cart where you can pay tuition, make a donation, and buy MLWare all in one place!  Check it out and let us know what you think at office@mlw.org.

2013 Core Programs Almost Full - Reserve your spot today

2013 Scholarship Fund

Maintained through donations, the MLW Scholarship Fund is needed now more than ever. You can do your part to make the MLW experience possible for a student by contributing to our Make it Happen campaign.

Last year, MLW awarded over $20,000 in scholarships.  See what recipients wrote in their moving thank you letters, including these great sentiments:

"Thank you for believing in me"

"Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community"

"Thank you very much, very, very, very, very, very, very much"

"This week has been a great experience because I feel different, inspired, touched, and happy. I would not have been able to come to this camp if it were not for your help."

Each 2013 MLW Scholarship Campaign donor receives a great gift certificate as a thank you.

The campaign has LESS THAN TWO WEEKS left so check out the page, watch the touching video, make your contribution of any size today, and share the link with people you know

Thanks for your support!
Giving Back by Olivia Keithly

Earlier this year I found myself reflecting on how I came to know and love Maryland Leadership Workshops. MLW has been an important part of my life for the last five years. When thinking about my first experience as a delegate at Senior High in 2008 (shout out to the Olympians) I realized that my connection to MLW was made possible through wonderful sponsors. I attended both SHW and ALS on full scholarship provided by Baltimore County Student Councils. After attending ALS, I applied to staff and have been doing so ever since. I realized that a large part of my life would be empty had I not been sponsored to attend MLW for two years as a delegate.

I decided that the best way I could continue the cycle of positive energy would be to sponsor two students to attend MLW programs. That way, I can give back what was given to me and watch the MLW Magic change two kids' lives just like it changed mine many summers ago. I worked with my sister, who is a teacher at Northbend Middle School in Baltimore City, to conduct an essay contest and select two finalists to attend MLW programs this summer. I am beyond excited to watch the MLW magic affect them and all of our other wonderful delegates this summer.

Many delegates are given the opportunity to attend MLW on scholarships and I encourage everyone in whatever way they can to help make a student's chance of attending MLW a reality!
Meet Dr. Lillian Lowery, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools

Our partner organization Leadership Maryland has arranged a series of meet and greet events around the state with Dr. Lowery, the State Superintendent of Schools, and Betty Weller, President of MSEA and MLW Board Member, to hear about the changes and improvements happening in our public school systems.

There is limited space available at each venue.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Ilaya at the MLW office.

Community Outreach Programs

Our Community Outreach team has a full summer of programming lined up, including the ever-popular outreaches listed below made possible by our clients who are committed to helping students realize their own potential.

If you are interested in having MLW staff come to your community to provide a customized MLW program, contact the MLW office to find out more.

Upcoming Community Outreach Programs

LEAD - Leadership Southern Maryland

LEAD is a residential Southern Maryland Youth Leadership Program being held on June 23-26th 2013 at St. Mary's College of Maryland. SMECO, The Patuxent Partnership, SOMDCAN, College of Southern Maryland and generous individual donors all make this program possible.  LEAD is focused on strengthening skills in communication, planning, working in groups, and of course, leadership!

This is a four-day summer program for high-school students entering grades 10, 11 and 12 who live in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties.  LAD is focused on strengthening skills in communication, planning, working in groups, and of course, leadership!  Click on the link above for application information.

Journey -  The Womens' Giving Circle of Howard County

At this unique program designed for 8th and 9th grade girls from Howard County, each student identifies her own leadership skills, strengths, and weaknesses in a supportive and fun environment, which fosters increased self-esteem and confidence. The program culminates with a follow on activity in the community in the late summer honoring women leaders. Applications are available on the MLW website.

The SMILE Youth Leadership Academy - The Greater Excellence in Education Foundation (GEEF)

GEEF provides leadership programs to empower Harford County Public School students with the skills to make positive choices, gain self-confidence and learn skills that are critical to their lifelong development. These programs can also help youth understand how effective communication and peer support can enhance individual and group decision-making, the development of trust, and positive risk-taking. An important aspect of the Youth Leadership Academy is each student developing a personal plan that outlines their necessary steps in achieving their post secondary dreams!

2013 Core Programs
Staff Training is underway and the 2013 programs continue to get better as we incorporate feedback and introduce new ideas to keep the curriculum relevant and fresh.  Staff will spend literally hundreds of hours preparing for the one week programs. We guarantee that there will be something useful for everyone who attends!

Program specific information will be sent to 2013 delegates in mid-June with a packing list and directions to Washington College

Shout Outs to Amazing Active and Alumni Staff members
Karen Crawford with plaque
Community Outreach Director Kori Jones
Karen Crawford
A long time friend and supporter of MLW, Karen Crawford was recognized this year by the Board of Directors and Program Committee for her continued advancement of MLW. In her capacity advising students in Montgomery County and through her extensive work with the Maryland Association of Student Councils, Karen is always quick to encourage students to attend MLW programs.  Karen served as an MLW staff member and still teaches an amazing workshop on visuals. She continues to be in touch with and support former delegates and alumni staff.

Thanks for all you do for MLW!
Kori Jones
Congratulations to Community Outreach Director Kori Jones, who was recognized on April 30 with a nomination for the Howard County Department of Citizen Services 14th Annual Celebrating Success Award!  Kori was nominated for his work with the after school program for Howard County Recreation and Parks.  As his nomination stated, "Kori is an Assistant Director at the Fulton E.S. and the TREC Park (high school) after school program.  The diversity of participants in both programs gives testament to Kori's unique abilities to work with all children.  He is an extremely creative, responsible and a professional young man, and his excellent communication skills have established a wonderful rapport with program participants."  These are all things we know about Kori from his amazing work at MLW, but it's great to know that the entire community recognizes Kori's greatness too!  Way to go Kori!

As you can see, there is a lot of excitement as we prepare for the 58th summer of making MLW magic.  As a primarily volunteer-run organization, MLW relies on word of mouth to make sure students from around the state know about this incredible opportunity.

Thank you for your continued support and be sure to tell middle and high school students you know about MLW!

Sincerely,
Ilaya Signature

Make the Magic Happen

You can help make the MLW magic possible for a Maryland Student.

MLW is committed to making our programs available to anyone interested in attending, regardless of ability to pay the tuition.  MLW has established a scholarship fund to make this possible.

Please do your part to keep the scholarship fund going to spread the magic!  Your contribution of $10 buys a tshirt, $50 provides a guidebook, and $1,200 covers the full costs of the program.

That's right - currently MLW only charges approximately 2/3 the cost of the program thanks to generous donations from grants and individuals like you! Thank you for your support!
