No Fooling - April 1 is the Early Bird Deadline
|
This year we have streamlined the application process. Simply download the application and complete the contact and general information, read and sign required signature pages, answer the essay questions, and ask someone to complete the recommendation form* for you. Simple, right? We ask for all that information because the staff uses it to help design and prepare the best program for you.
Send in the application and your payment postmarked by April 1 to qualify for the Early Bird Discount and to hold your place. Upon receipt of your application, MLW will send you a letter and medical forms that must be completed and returned by June 1.
*recommendation forms may arrive after the April 1 deadline if the rest of the application is postmarked by April 1.

Staff begin their training in mid-May and spend literally hundreds of hours preparing for the one week program they staff. Program Directors have already been working hard on staffing, curriculum, training plans, and designing the best programs to date.
Each week-long residential program is held on the campus of Washington College and attracts students from around the state of Maryland, the mid-Atlantic and beyond! Read more and find the program that is right for you.

 | Olivia with SESASC delegates |
SESASC
At their annual conference, MLW staff member and Assistant Director of Community Outreach Programs Olivia Keithley facilitated a workshop on Advocacy and Civic Engagement where delegates talked about current issues facing teens in their schools and what they can do about these issues. "What was really cool was delegates got to see that other students from different schools are facing similar problems," said Keithley who also talked about MLW core programs with students, teachers and administrators. Overall it was a good opportunity to spread the word and get more people interested.

MLW and MASC - A Special Bond
Did you know that these two organizations began their histories together? And while MLW is now an independent 501 c 3 non profit organization, we still work with MASC (the Maryland Association of Student Councils) and its members through year-round facilitation, mentoring and support. In the 2012-2013 school year, MLW facilitated the Advance Conference in August, and presented workshops at the Fall Leadership Conference and will be at the Annual Convention being held in Ocean City. MLW also attends executive board meetings and other events throughout the year where staff interact with MASC executive board members to mentor, coach and support these student leaders.

Meet Dr. Lillian Lowery, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools

Our partner organization Leadership Maryland has arranged a series of meet and greet events around the state with Dr. Lowery, the State Superintendent of Schools to hear about the changes and improvements to come to our public school systems.

Ultimately, no matter how good the programs are, they cannot happen without you - the students, advisers, parents, alumni, community leaders and friends of MLW that have made the magic happen for 58 years! As a primarily volunteer-run organization, MLW relies on word of mouth to make sure students from around the state know about this incredible opportunity.
Thank you for your continued support and be sure to tell middle and high school students you know about MLW!
Sincerely, Ilaya Hopkins

You can help make the MLW magic possible for a Maryland Student.
MLW is committed to making our programs available to anyone interested in attending, regardless of ability to pay the tuition. MLW has established a scholarship fund to make this possible.
Please do your part to keep the scholarship fund going to spread the magic! Your contribution of $10 buys a tshirt, $50 provides a guidebook, and $1,200 covers the full costs of the program.
That's right - currently MLW only charges approximately 2/3 the cost of the program thanks to generous donations from grants and individuals.
Watch for an exciting announcement coming up that makes it easy and fun to do your part by contributing to the 2013 Scholarship Fund!
