Dear Friends,
As we move into the second half of 2014, I want to thank each of you for partnering with me to bring healing organic meals and a community of caring to our clients, and to give teens opportunities to learn about healthy eating, gain leadership and job-readiness skills and give back to their community.
With an added cooking day starting soon in our Sebastopol kitchen, a larger cooking space in Marin, our Sonoma kitchen approaching its first anniversary, a planned 2015 launch for a new location in the East Bay, and demand rising for our training program for new affiliates outside the Bay Area, our circle continues to widen.
In Sonoma and Marin counties in 2014, we'll deliver 16,000 more meals than last year, and that means hundreds more clients and teens will be supported in changing their eating habits and in experiencing the power of community.
Those added meals will cost about $120,000 to prepare and deliver. You can help!
Please support our
summer Fund a Meal campaign by donating online now.
Your financial support will mean the world to one of our clients. And when you donate to Ceres, your money funds not just those healing meals, but also our incredible teen program. Our teen volunteers are trained and mentored in leadership, work-readiness and cooking as they grow and prepare the free and low cost healthy organic meals designed to support the healing of clients facing a health crisis like cancer.
As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a the best program we can for teens, we've just added a second teen seat to our Board of Directors, and given full voting rights to teen members. You can read about this year's teen board members below.
I'd like to thank everyone who has attended one of the many special events we've been a part of this summer, and all who are planning to join us for Harvest of the Heart, Ceres' annual gala event, in a few weeks. You can read more about all of these events in the paragraphs that follow.
Thank you for helping us bring the healing power of food and community to more clients and teens this year. We couldn't do this work without you!
Warmly,
Cathryn Couch
Executive Director

Welcoming Two New Teen Board Members
Mimi (Aimee) Largier
Teen Board Member
Mimi started volunteering at Ceres during her freshman year and her involvement in the organization has increased as the years have passed. Now, as a senior, she is even more dedicated to Ceres and its mission.
Mimi is an avid student (concurrently enrolled in Analy High School and the SRJC) and participates in a diversity of activities. Since her birth in South Africa she has had a love of music and has studied the violin for over eleven years, performing in several recitals, events, and fundraisers annually and is the first chair of the award-winning Analy Orchestra. Mimi is a devoted athlete-playing on two high school sports teams each year as well as pickup games. She tutors math and chemistry and is a WESCO soccer referee. Next year Mimi will attend college where she will pursue her love of math.
Representing her peers on the board is a responsibility that Mimi is honored and committed to fulfilling. The Ceres experience has set the bar for continued community involvement throughout her life.
~~~
Sophie Leveque-Eichhorn
Teen Board Member
Sophie is currently a Junior at Orchard View High School and also attends the Santa Rosa Junior College. Outside of school and Ceres she loves to ballroom dance, cook desserts, sing, and read classics and mysteries (occasionally all at the same time).
Sophie has been volunteering at Ceres for three years, the last two as a teen leader. Because of Ceres she has developed a strong sense of what it means to be part of a community, and has also learned how amazing it is to be able to make a difference in the lives of others. She is very excited to be able to learn more about the inner workings of Ceres through her work on the Board of Directors.
She hopes to be able to translate all that she has learned at Ceres into her adult life, and to have the opportunity to help change the lives of others the way that Ceres has changed hers.
Ceres Teens and Staff Collaborating with San Francisco Giants
A group from Ceres visited the San Francisco Giants recently to continue collaborating with them on the use of their new Garden at AT&T Park.
The organic garden is below the centerfield wall and features 4,320 square feet of vegetable and fruit beds that will be used in the stadium concessions and as a community classroom.
Ceres is working with the Giants to identify ways to partner with additional local youth-serving organizations that will be involved in caring for and learning in the garden.
Nutrition News
Digestion: Health Begins Here (Part 1)
by Thais Harris, NC
Ceres' Nutrition Education Program Manager
You are not just what you eat, you are what you absorb. Our health depends on our ability to digest what we consume, assimilate nutrients, and properly dispose of waste products.
Our digestive tract is a complex ecosystem, and needs to maintain acid/base balance (for proper pH), healthy muscle tone (to ensure foods move in the direction), appropriate acid secretion in the stomach (to protect us from harmful bacteria and to break down foods), sufficient enzymes (from the pancreas, to further break down foods), proper bile secretion (from the liver via gall bladder, for fat absorption), and strong mucosa (to protect us and so we can absorb nutrients). Not to mention keeping the right atmosphere for the friendly bacteria to inhabit it, thus keeping the unfriendly microorganisms out. To meet all of these needs, we need to consume whole, healthy foods that provide enzymes, vitamins, minerals, fiber, proteins, fats and carbohydrates, and we also need to understand how our lifestyle affects this process.
Digestion starts with our brains. When we think of food, look at food, smell food, and touch food, our brains start the process by initiating physiological responses, such as salivation, heart rate changes, digestive enzyme secretion, and many others. This is one of the reasons why eating mindfully helps digestion. When you are ready to eat, present your food beautifully, even if you are just cooking for yourself. Take a deep, and then look at your plate, smell the aromas, and feel gratitude. Then take your time chewing, experiencing all the different textures in the food. Put your fork or spoon down between bites, and visualize how your food is nourishing you.
Note from a Client
~ Dear Ceres Angels~
Once again. Thank you for another week of healthy meals! Everything is always delicious, and I know that it's prepared with love. The flowers were so cheerful!
Also, I loved the painted rock; I put in in my garden.
I am feeling great these days as I heal. I've been in remission, and my body is doing everything
it needs to do to clean up and heal.
I know the healthy meals I've been receiving from Ceres have played a big role in my recovery.
~ Sending you love and blessings ~
Ceres' teens raise nearly $11,000 to fund our work in Sonoma County
On July 1, Ceres' teen chefs and gardeners teamed up with zazu kitchen + farm for what has become a treasured
annual tradition for our teens: working alongside Chefs
Duskie Estes and John Stewart to prepare and serve a stellar local meal and raise funds for Ceres.
The money they raised together--$10,916.75--will nourish 20 of our clients for 3 months.
As Ceres Executive Director put it:
"what I experienced that night was the heart and soul of Ceres coming together with the heart and soul of zazu: Amazing local food prepared with love. Community coming together to make a difference. And youth being given an opportunity to be real leaders and owners."
We are deeply honored to have zazu's continued partnership in the work we are doing at Ceres through this amazing annual event. This event was also supported by twenty local businesses who donated the food and beverages we served, and of course, by our guests!
Thank you to everyone who dined with us, to the zazu staff, to those who donated food and beverages, and most of all to our teens, for whole-heartedly stepping into this opportunity and for showing up as their passionate, caring, competent and responsible selves yet again. They rocked!
Thanks to these donors, 100% of proceeds and gratuities go to support Ceres' work in Sonoma County:
- DeVoto Cider
- EMTU Estate Wines
- Littorai Wines
- Gourmet Mushrooms
- Laguna Farm
- Napa Valley Lamb
- Oliver's Market
- Radio-Coteau
- Redwood Hill Farm & Creamery
Days of Wine and Lavender at Matanzas Creek Winery
Our participation at the June 28th event at Matanzas Creek Winery was a wonderful experience, both for the teens and the attendees of the event. We're grateful to Matanzas Creek for making us their event beneficiary for the second year.
Ceres' Teens prepared and served two salads: Tuscan Kale (as seen in our Nourishing Connections Cookbook and available at local Whole Foods Market delis) and Quinoa Summer Salad. Several event guests came back for seconds, and some even told us that the Quinoa salad was the best thing they tasted that day among all the offerings from local chefs and restaurants. Wow! We share the recipe with you this month.
Thank you, Matanzas Creek Winery and Days of Wine and Lavender guests!
