Latte Cart Volunteers Needed

The PTSA provides for a Latte Cart vendor to come to Paly each month for faculty and staff. There are five events in total and this years dates are as follows: Sept. 16, Nov. 18, Jan. 20, Mar. 16, and Apr. 20. At these five events, parents provide treats for the faculty and staff beginning at 7:00 a.m. through 10:30 a.m. If you would like to volunteer to bring in snacks ranging from breakfast baked goods, fruit, juice, water, etc., please email me for more information, Andrea Lamb ( annlamb67@gmail.com). Your help and support for this tradition is greatly appreciated! The position for Latte Cart Coordinator is currently open and I will help transition the new volunteer. Spirit Week Volunteering!

The students begin float construction the weekend of October 17th and 18th with float building/decorating continuing during the week of Oct 19-22nd after school and through dinner. The food delivery sign ups are coming along - thank you! But we still need more parents to volunteer time during the days and evenings in the Auto Shop to help supervise and support the students as they create their floats. Viking Parents - Spirit Week 2015 approaches. Arguably the biggest week of the year for students, Spirit Week is Homecoming taken to another level, with games and competitions held each day at lunch. Students dress up, build floats, created dances and cheer their hearts out for a full week. There are also opportunities for you to join in the fun, or just come and watch the show. Paly Sports Boosters Participation Donations New
Ongoing Congratulations to the Boys' F/S and Varsity water polo teams for being the first & only Paly teams with 100% participation donations! Participation donations and other contributions to Paly Sports Boosters make it possible for Viking athletes to compete on the court, on the field and in the pool. Aside from coaches stipends, it covers all athletic expenses including league fees, uniforms, equipment, transportation and officiating. The suggested donation amount is $200 per athlete per season (though all donation amounts are accepted, appreciated and tax-deductible.) If you've already donated, THANK YOU! Improvements for safe cycling, walking, and driving are planned for Churchill Ave. There will be a community meeting on Thurs. Oct. 22, 2015 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM to update citizens on the progress of phase 1 (from Castilleja Ave to El Camino Real) and plans for phase 2 (Caltrain tracks to Bryant St.). SELPA1 CAC Mental Health Committee Teen Support Group
Intake interviews for this session will continue until October 15th.
The SELPA1 CAC Mental Health committee is forming a new adolescent/teen support group in partnership with CHAC (Community Health Awareness council of Mountain View - http://www.chacmv.org/ ), Mills-Peninsula Hospital of San Mateo, and several other location mental health organizations. Share your Passion & Expertise - Become an Advanced Authentic Research (AAR) Program Mentor to Gunn and/or Paly Student(s) Mentor Matching Oct 1-15 People with passion can change the world for the better, please let our Titans (Gunn) & Vikings (Paly) discover their passion with you... The AAR student application deadline is fast approaching, we are looking for more mentors. Your time commitment can be flexible, as the AAR program will provide students the necessary support to allow this flexible time commitment. The Advanced Authentic Research (AAR) Program is a unique opportunity for PAUSD students in grades 10-12 to do original research in an area of their choosing. These students will bring passion, curiosity, and perseverance to the program. The students will be paired with mentors/advisors who are experts in the field of the student's choosing. It is possible for more than one student to work on a given project. The mentor will support and facilitate the student's work in the mentor's lab, office, or other appropriate environment. The student's research will be supported by the process oriented curriculum developed by the AAR team. The expectation is that students will spend about 60 hours per semester (3-4 hours per week) on their project. The program is offered as a Pass/Fail option and will earn 5 credits per semester. We all prosper when everyone has access to healthcare - Ravenswood prevents thousands of ER visits every year, saving Silicon Valley hospitals and taxpayers millions of dollars. It promises to get you in the Halloween spirit as you join glamorous, young television producer Norma Corwin as she fulfills a childhood vow to spend a night alone in The Inn of the Three Sisters, an eerie and forbidding hotel famous for an unresolved murder, horrifying spirit manifestations and murderous intrigue. What changes will increase participation among your peers? Winners receive round-trip travel to Sacramento to meet with state leaders and share their views. DEADLINE: November 18. Palo Alto Chinese School is Accepting New Students
Palo Alto Chinese School has been serving the community in Chinese language instructions for 53 years, and is still accepting new enrollment. Class meets every Friday 7-9 PM at JLS Middle School. There are two tracks. The Mandarin track is offered from Preschool - Grade 12, for students from heritage families. The Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) track is offered from K - Grade 7, for students with little exposure to Chinese language. Buddies4Math: Help 2nd-5th Graders with Math, Earn Community Svc Hours Most Fridays from 4:05-5:55pm, 1st semester tutoring through Dec. 4 at Castro Elementary, 505 Escuela Ave., Mountain View Buddies4Math is a great opportunity to help elementary school students who struggle with math while earning community service hours and working with friends. The program has had incredible quantifiable (STAR test) results, due in part to the work of Paly student volunteers. Volunteering for all sessions throughout the year is roughly equivalent to half the requirements for the President's Volunteer Service Award. Buddies4Math seeks Paly students interesting in tutoring and also those willing to take on leadership positions in the program under the mentorship of current student leaders. Are you having your child (6m-13yo) vaccinated against the flu this fall?
Stanford University would appreciate your help in furthering seasonal flu research by volunteering your child for a study. Your participation will help scientists better understand the immune system by studying the responses to the flu vaccine. Your child will receive the same current FDA-licensed seasonal flu vaccine otherwise given by their pediatricians at no cost + $30 for every visit completed. A small blood sample or nasal swab may be collected.
Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University Celebrates Artists at Work

The Cantor Arts Center presents a major new exhibition, Artists at Work, which examines how artists become inspired, how artists make objects and how place impacts artists' work. Includes works by Édouard Manet, J. M. W. Turner, Thomas Hart Benton, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and other renowned American and European artists. Also included are loaned works by contemporary artists Trevor Paglen, Garth Weiser, Hope Gangloff and Rachel Owens, among others. The Cantor Arts Center is open six days a week, Wed-Mon, 11 AM -5 PM, Thurs until 8 PM. Admission is free. The Cantor is located on the Stanford campus. Stanford Sleep Study Ongoing We are currently conducting a study to help teens (14-18) go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. The treatment involves use of a light device that is placed by the child's bedside and flashes periodically throughout the night. Teens also meet for four sessions with a licensed psychologist at Stanford University to learn about sleep and strategies to improve sleep.
