Principal's Message
Dear Vikings,

Welcome to the start of the 2015-2016 school year!  On behalf of the entire staff, we are ready and excited to welcome our beloved students back to school tomorrow.  We can't wait!

In keeping with tradition, all students start their first day of school meeting with their Teacher Advisor (TA).  Our Teacher Advisors will check in with each advisee about their class schedule, help problem solve any issues and/or concerns, and most importantly, provide a kind and warm welcoming start to their first day.  At 9:05 am, students will begin their academic day attending all of their classes.  Please note that all PE classes will meet at the Football stadium bleachers on the first day.  The schedule for the day was sent out in your back-to-school mailing and details have been posted online.  Class schedules have been posted in Infinite Campus.  If your student does not have a schedule, please have them report to the Guidance office, which will open at 7:30 am.

Be sure to have your student return their back-to-school packet, if they haven't already done so.  Packets can be dropped off in the main office.

We hope to see you at the PTSA sponsored Welcome Back dinner, which will take place on Thursday, August 20th from 5-7pm in the quad.  The entire Viking community is welcome to join us. Thank you PTSA!

Finally, we encourage all of our students to bike and/or walk to school if possible.  Please know we are working closely with city officials to monitor the parking flow in and out of our parking lots and will have additional staff on-hand all week to assist with parking and student drop-off as we adjust to the challenges created by the construction projects on campus.  We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Again, welcome back!

Parent Networks For Paly Parents & Guardians - Join TODAY!  New
What are Parent Networks? Parent Networks are informal gatherings for parents and guardians from each grade level to get acquainted, share parenting ideas about high schoolers, get information on navigating Paly and the college process. These meetings occur monthly, by grade level. They are often held in parents' homes or, in some cases, at the school. We encourage all parents and guardians of current Paly students to join.
How can I get information about Parent Network meetings? Each class creates a schedule of meetings and publicizes these dates in the Paly eNews -"PalyLink".  Make sure you sign up for this valuable source of information (www.tinyurl.com/palylinksignup).  Also, make sure you sign up for your grade-specific Yahoo group.
Below is the list of Paly Parent Network Coordinators for the 2015-16 school year. Please contact the coordinators for your child's grade directly for information on how to join that grade's Parent Network YahooGroup.

Additional information on the Paly Parent Networks is available on the Paly website at http://palyptsa.paloaltopta.org/what-are-parent-networks/

College & Career Center CCC

Volunteering in the College & Career Center (C&CC)
The College and Career Center is located on the 1st floor of the Tower Building.  It is staffed by more than 40 parent volunteers who serve students and support our college and career advisors by performing administrative tasks and acting as the C&CC receptionist during a weekly 2 hour shift. Opportunities to work as a substitute or on special projects may also be available. Parents who sign up and work as substitutes and/or who work on special projects, will have priority for open "regular" shifts the following school year. To keep things running smoothly and seamlessly from year to year, we rely on returning volunteers for their experience in helping the C&CC run efficiently.

Returning Volunteer Meeting
Thurs, Aug. 20, 10:30am, LCR (Library Conference Room)
All returning parent volunteers are *required* to come to this meeting in order to keep their shift for the coming year.

New Volunteer Training
Fri, Aug. 21, 10am, LCR (Library Conference Room)
Parents of 10th, 11th and 12th graders who would like to become new volunteers (at least 5 spaces are available), substitutes, or work on special projects are welcome to attend this training. Attendance at the training is required in order to be eligible to volunteer in C&CC. Available shifts will be assigned on a lottery basis with priority given to 12thgrade and 11th grade parents.  New shifts begin the week of August 24. ]For more information, contact C&CC Volunteer Coordinators Joy Frick (joy.frick@yahoo.com) or Carlene Kemmerer (twinsbythesea@yahoo.com).

The  C&CC holds an open house after each parent night in the Fall so there are other opportunities to get to know more about C&CC. There is also a wealth of information in Naviance and on www.paly.net/college.

Stanford Sleep Study
New
Ongoing
We are currently conducting a study to help teens (14-18) go to bed earlier and wake up earlier.  The treatment involves use of a light device that is placed by the child's bedside and flashes periodically throughout the night. Teens also meet for four sessions with a licensed psychologist at Stanford University to learn about sleep and strategies to improve sleep. The paid study requires completing a sleep diary daily for five weeks. Please contact the Zeitzer Laboratory at teensleep@stanford.edu or (650) 725-7767

Summing Up Europe - London & Paris during Spring Break, 2016  New
Tour Leader:  Deanna Chute, Paly Math Teacher
This is a unique, mathematically-themed, international travel opportunity for high school students. We will spend three days in London, including daytrips to Bletchley Park and Hampton Court Palace.  Then, after taking the Eurostar across the channel, we sill spend three days in Paris, including an excursion to Chartres and the Loire Valley.
Students will see and appreciate mathematics beyond textbooks. Math is everywhere; it is a human endeavor shared by all cultures. Your child will step outside the classroom and engage with the mathematical world firsthand, appreciating its history, experiencing its beauty and seeing its connection to a variety of fields of study.  In addition, this incredible opportunity will help your child navigate new situations with a broader global perspective, build self-confidence and give them a life changing experience.
