Vote YES on Measure A* New

Mail in ballots must be posted by April 30

PTA Council has proudly voted to support the parcel tax renewal, now called Measure A, including a $999 donation to the parcel tax campaign. PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in the country. While we are strictly non-partisan, we can and do advocate for ballot measures. This Measure is extremely important to pass to keep the 80 teachers, counselors, librarians and psychologists for which the current parcel tax pays as well as support the increasing student enrollment (+1100 student since 2008/9, projected increase of +700 in the next 5 years). The modest increase in the parcel tax will enable a small expansion of funding to support struggling students, STEAM programs and student wellness. Even with the increase in property taxes we have enjoyed in the last year, our school district funds do not keep up with inflation. We have lost approximately $4 million of income annually from the Cubberley lease as well as having to fund our employee pension plan that the state has pushed onto school districts. Because we are a basic aid district we will not get more money from the state's Local Control Funding Formula.

Election information, including how to register to vote

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
The time has finally come!  Starting today, we are hosting the WASC Visiting Committee, a team of seven dedicated educators who will spend the next three days visiting classrooms and getting to know our school.  The purpose of their visit is to validate our self-study report and make a recommendation regarding Paly's WASC accreditation.  We are excited to share the good work that takes place everyday on our campus.  I'll send out follow-up information later this week following their visit, including next steps for our school.  Stay tuned.

What a busy time of year!  Life as a high school principal is never dull, especially when you are at Paly.  A few highlights of the amazing events that took place on our campus include:

  • In the arts, dress rehearsal for our upcoming spring musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, began.  The show opens on March 6th.  Looking forward to it! "Art in Unusual Places" occurred all around campus bringing joy during brunch/lunch and was a huge success.  Thank you VAPA students! And award winning photojournalist Ed Kashi visited the MAC on Friday for an inspiring day-long program.
  • In athletics, our winter sports teams competed in CCS playoffs, while our spring sports kicked-off their seasons.  Go Vikings!
  • In student activities, many clubs such as DECA, Model UN and Entrepreneurs traveled to local, national and international competitions.  ASB hosted a successful student forum Thursday night.
  • In math, students competed in the next stage of the AMC.
  • In robotics, TEAM 8 finished their build on the 17th and have been busy preparing for their upcoming competition at the Central Valley regionals.  Good luck!
  • Former US Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu kicked off the MAC Speaker Series on Wednesday night hosting a discussion on "Energy, Climate Change and a Path Forward."
  • In advisory, we wrapped up the course selection process for the '15-'16 school year.  Hard to believe we are starting to plan for next year already?!

Looking ahead, Career Month begins this week ,and we want to thank all of the parent volunteers, contributors and featured speakers that continue to make this an impressive opportunity for our students.  Please encourage your students to attend!

With Viking Pride,

Kim Diorio

The Drowsy Chaperone

Mar 6, 7, & 12-14, 7:30pm; Mar 8, 2 pm, Performances are at Palo Alto High School Haymarket Theatre, 50 Embarcadero Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94301
The Drowsy Chaperone, winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Book and Best Original Score, is one of the funniest musicals ever written. It is a hysterical send-up of the Astaire and Rogers films of the 1930's, filled with top hats, gangsters, starlets, Prohibition martinis and... love. As the character, The Man in the Chair says of Drowsy Chaperone, "there's something for everyone... a little Busby Berkeley, a little Jane Goodall," all rolled into one smashingly entertaining evening of musical theater.
Students & Seniors $10.00, Adults $15.00, reserved seats are available at http://palytheatre.seatyourself.biz  or at the door. Box office opens one hour prior to curtain.
