Paly Robotics Parents and Boosters Meeting New

Pets and owners are requested to help with PAWS at Paly that will be taking place during the Finals Food for Thought program. There will be a designated area for students to stop by, on their own volition, to say hello to the animals. If you have a certified therapy animal and would like to be a part of PAWS at Paly please contact Beth Martin, Bmartin@pausd.org. Paperwork will need to be submitted to Beth prior to bringing the animal on campus. If you have any questions please contact Beth.

 

Library After Hour program during Finals (Food for Thought): Volunteers Needed New
Dec. 8-11 & Dec .15-18, 4-6:30pm, Library & Student center

Healthy and hearty snacks will be served to students who choose to take advantage of the library after hour study program (4:00pm-8:30pm). Teachers will also be available at the library during this time period! Volunteers needed to help library staff with set up and clean up. Fiery Arts Glass Workshops 

Dec. 20-21, Jan. 4-5, Jan. 24-25, Feb. 21-22, March 21-22, April 25-26, May 23-24, June 6-7, 9am-3pm at Paly's Glass Studio

Open to the public, students and parents. Here's your chance to learn to blow glass at Paly. Yes, we have a glass studio. Workshops do fill up fast, so, do not hesitate, sign up for a date. The 2 day weekend workshop will focus on beginning glass blowing techniques. It's an incredible, fun, hands-on experience. Repeating students progress from their last session. Advanced Sign up required. Class limit is 4. Teens and adults. $375 per person. Proceeds benefit the Palo Alto High School Fiery Arts. Latte Cart Volunteers Needed

The PTSA provides for a Latte Cart vendor to come to Paly each month for faculty and staff. There are five events including Nov. 12, Jan. 14, Mar. 18, and Apr. 15. Parents provide treats for the faculty and staff from 7 - 10:30 am. If you would like to volunteer to bring in snacks ranging from breakfast baked goods, fruit, juice, water, etc., email annlamb67@gmail.com. Seniors: Former Paly parent Doug Shaker has been interviewing candidates for Yale for the last 15 years.  He will describe the interview process and its place in admissions.  He will also talk about what college interviewers are looking for and how to prepare for a college interview.  Q & A encouraged.

Family Holiday Volunteering 
Ongoing Nov-Jan; Various dates & times for all ages
If you're looking for a way to get your family into the holiday spirit by helping others, check out http://familyholidayhelpers.org, a non-profit web site created by a mom of two PAUSD students to help parents find volunteering opportunities during the holiday season with their children in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are a variety of local opportunities for families, such as making colorful handmade cards for seniors, working a shift at the San Francisco Food Bank, or prepping/serving food on Thanksgiving day (for teens). Happy volunteering!

The Shoebox Project for Shelters 

Drop off deadline is Dec. 18

The Shoebox Project for Shelters is a charitable initiative that collects small gifts that are packaged in shoeboxes, and distributes them to women in shelters just before the holidays.These shoeboxes brighten the holiday season and let the women know they are special and not forgotten. Visiting Artists to Engage Community in Creative Process

Palo Alto Art Center Continues its Artist-in-Residence Program with May Wilson and Lauren DiCioccio. Community members have the unique opportunity to view and contribute to the creative process as these artists begin their residency as part of the Palo Alto Art Center's Artist-In-Residence program this month. The two artists, working in tandem, will use a wide range of fabric donated by the public to create a series of imaginative, anthropomorphic sculptures at their workshop in the Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.


VHS Tapes Transformed

Visit Cristina Vel�zquez's shimmering installation, Repurposed Black - Endless, on view in the Glass Gallery through December 23. For Repurposed Black-Endless, Vel�zquez employs VHS tapes as material for large-scale, densely knit sculptures, transforming trash into art. Vel�zquez created the artwork during her residency by knitting together VHS tape from some of the 4,000 videocassettes donated by the community.

Concerto Movement Competition for Bay Area Youth

Concerto Movement Competition open to school-aged music students, both instrumentalists and vocalists. The purpose of the competition is to recognize outstanding talent and provide an invaluable learning and performing experience, and is underwritten by J.W. & H.M. Goodman. Neighbors Abroad (www.neighborsabroad.org), Palo Alto's sister city organization, has sponsored a student exchange with Oaxaca, Mexico, since 1965.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students from Palo Alto to live as a member of a Oaxacan family.  Students significantly improve their Spanish language skills, learn about another culture, build new friendships, and get to experience this beautiful and historic city.  Dates of the exchange:  In Oaxaca for 3-5 weeks, then in Palo Alto for 3-5 weeks.  Cost: Approximately $1,000 plus spending money (includes round-trip airfare and a prorated amount towards chaperone's expenses).  Eligibility:  Applicants should be high school students at least 15 years old by June of 2015, who are studying Spanish at any level.  Get an application at the Family Information Meeting on Monday, November 24, 7:30pm, Cubberley Community Center, Room A-3, or by contacting Marion Mandell at marionb@sonic.net or 650.493.3798 or Lynne Russell at lynnerussell1@gmail.com (her daughter, a Gunn HS junior, participated in the exchange two years ago).
