September 13

Ancient Pottery Making Workshop  
Kellogg-Hubbard Library, Montpelier 
A hands-on workshop led by Archaeologist Charlie Paquin. Learn the techniques used to make pottery vessels and surface decorations like Native Americans living in Vermont did many years ago. Clay will be provided. The pots will not be fired in this workshop but can be finished at home using low-temperature firing. For adults and children, ages 10 and older (who are accompanied by adults). Pre-registration is required.

The Second Annual James B. Petersen Lecture Drones and Bones: Digital Approaches to Archaeology in Northern Peru Thursday,
Fleming Museum of Art, Burlington
The Vermont Archaeology Heritage Center, Fleming Museum of Art, UVM Department of Anthropology and the Center for Research on Vermont are proud to present the Second Annual James B. Petersen Lecture. Hear University of Vermont archaeologist Dr. Parker VanValkenburgh share stories of how he has used digital technologies to solve archaeological problems in Peru.

19th Annual Northeastern Open Atlatl Championship
Chimney Point State Historic Site, Addison
Participate in or watch this annual championship. The sport of atlatl throwing is based on the ancient hunting technique of using the atlatl, or spear throweratlatl action, to improve the thrust and accuracy of a hunting spear. Used across the world for about 20,000 years, atlatls were a key part of Vermont's Native people's hunting tool kit throughout pre-Contact history. Demonstrations and workshops on flint knapping, Woodland pottery and other crafts and skills.

Ask an Archaeologist 
Eureka Schoolhouse, Springfield 
Come meet with local historians and archaeologists for an evening at the 1790s Eureka Schoolhouse State Historic Site. Located in the town of Springfield, the Eureka Schoolhouse is the oldest one-room schoolhouse in Vermont and one of the few surviving eighteenth-century public buildings in the state. Ask questions, hear and share stories, see archaeological collections, or bring artifacts and findings to inquire with the experts within an authentic historic building!

War of 1812 in the Champlain Valley:
On the Land, On the Water and Under the Water Conference
 
Burlington City Hall, Burlington  
An exciting, day-long conference on the War of 1812 in the Champlain Valley. Historians and archaeologists share their knowledge and discoveries from the land, the water, and underneath the waves of Lake Champlain. Their research and presentations will reveal little-known stories about this chapter of Vermont and regional history. This conference will appeal to everyone interested in the history and archaeology of the Champlain Valley and the war that shaped our new nation.
