Lab Work Opportunity

VAS members will once again have an opportunity to help process and analyze artifacts from the Homer Stone Quartzite Quarry this winter.   Guidance will be provided by the UVM-Consulting Archaeology Program's Geoff Mandel.  We will be gathering on Tuesdays at CAP's lab in Delahanty Hall (the old Trinity Campus), 180 Colchester Ave, Burlington.  CAP's administrative offices are located on the first floor (rear), and the lab is on the second floor.  The hours of our "day" are flexible, but a VAS person is usually at the lab by 9:00 am, and most of us are back on the road again by 3:00 pm or so. For more information please contact Dave Lacy (802-747-6719, or dlacy@fs.fed.us) or Geoff Mandel (802-656-8669, or gmandel@uvm.edu).

Connecticut Historic Preservation Project

The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation is investing in a new project called "Making Places, Historic Mills of Connecticut."

Staff of the trust are researching and preparing a database of at least 200 Historic Resource Inventories on industrial sites. The trust was awarded a grant of $250,000 from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority as the first major investment. The first step will be a survey of historic industrial complexes, mill villages, and industrial neighborhoods to update the 1981 SIA survey (which focused on sites between 1840 and 1910).

The new survey will extend the time frame to 1965. Future phases will include redevelopment plans and small grants to help utilize old mills.
