Alberta Community and Cooperative Association (ACCA)

For more than 150 years, co-operatives have been a tool for individuals and communities to organize for their common benefit. There are multi-million dollar corporations and there are small buying clubs run out of someone's basement. From farmers and nurses to teachers and students. Co-operatives help millions afford a better quality of life and improve the communities in which they live.

ACCA is hosting a series of sessions to explore the potential of creating a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs interested in starting co-operatives. The co-op starter is being called the Alberta Co-op Enterprise Hub, and stems from discussions at ACCA's first Gathering of Alberta Co-operatives earlier this year.

A final working session will be held in Red Deer, March 15 with Peter Couchman, chief executive of the Plunkett Foundation, and an expert on co-operative and social enterprise development.

Message from the Chair: Harvey Walsh

Harvey Walsh 2013
2013 CAEP Chair
Harvey Walsh

As your newly elected Chair, I am pleased to represent Central Alberta Economic Partnership (CAEP). Alberta's first and largest Regional Economic Development Alliance. CAEP is unique among the Province's REDAs and is able to provide leadership in economic development not only for the Central Region but contribute to economic development policy in Alberta. I am looking forward to working with CAEP members in the coming years as we grow our region and its 42 vibrant communities.I look forward to seeing you at our next event. Watch your inbox for news and announcements.

In January, the board met for a Strategic Planning Session where we made great strides in setting a positive direction for CAEP. We confirmed our vision that central Alberta is to be recognized as the most innovative and prosperous region in Canada, and we are proud to take on the tasks necessary to ensure that this vision is realized. Dedication to our Five Areas of Focus means that CAEP members will benefit from a broad perspective of experience and hard work from our CAEP committees who will provide; training, speaker events, and a conduit to regional and global opportunities.

I look forward to seeing you at our next event.  Watch your inbox for news and announcements.

CAEP says Thank You to Directors
CAEP members expressed their thanks to Al Kemmere (above), who served as CAEP's chair for the past 3 years and over saw some significant changes in the organization which laid the foundation for CAEP's Five Areas of Focus as approved in January 2013. He will continue on as a Director.

We also said farewell to other board members, including Paul Harris and Joe Gendre who have been active on CAEP member committees.  Their contributions have been much appreciated over the years!

Just as we say good-bye to some, though, CAEP welcomed new directors to the Board following the voting and appointment process. Directors beginning or renewing their terms in 2013 include Jim Wood (Red Deer County Mayor), Will Taylor (Town of Blackfalds Councillor) , Rod McDermand ( Lacombe County Councillor), Buck Buchanan (City of Red Deer Councillor appointee)  and Harvey Walsh who was also elected as CAEP Chair.

Todd Hirsch Senior Economist with ATB Financial and one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People (as named by Alberta Venture magazine) was gracious in autographing his books for members following his keynote address at the Fall GM.

CAEP members also enjoyed hearing from Leduc Alderman Dominic Mishio on the Genuine Wealth model as a tool for helping communities develop resilient  economies.

CAEP also thanks its sponsors of the event and iMedia TV for their production of seasonal video messages.

 Message from the Executive Director

CAEP Executive Director  Dale Barr

The CAEP budget (2012-2013) is on track and should finish the year close to budget. We are currently evaluating some exciting new projects for our 2013-2014 budget year and your CAEP board will be reviewing these items at the March 27th Board and Budget meeting in Penhold. I would like to thank all the CAEP Board and the Committee members for your input and suggestions throughout this process.

Hold the Date "June 13th", and join us for our Annual General Meeting breakfast and get a full update on last year's accomplishments and the upcoming projects.

Spring is on the way and CAEP has been finalizing last years projects and getting ready for our year end. We are still completing a few projects like our Community Profiles and updating the CAEP website with a direct link. This will connect all communities with current statistical information from Statistic Canada and the Alberta Government. Thank you to all the communities that assisted us through this process.

Sincerely,

Dale Barr
