ELCA members describe life-changing Youth Gathering
Life-changing, amazing, unimaginable, and impactful are some of the words members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) used to describe their experience during the ELCA Youth Gathering meeting here July 15-19.

About 30,000 youth, adult leaders, volunteers and other Lutherans from around the world are gathered here under the theme "Rise Up Together." The event provides leadership development, faith formation, service opportunities and more. ELCA Youth Gatherings are held every three years.

The gathering's Walk for Water effort is hosted by ELCA's World Hunger at the Cobo Center. The walk simulates the experience of women in Sub-Saharan Africa who walk an average of three miles each day to fetch water for their families. Other activities at the center included painting plywood boards that will be used to board up abandoned homes in Detroit.

Brunch and Browse
Brunch and Browse is an annual event held at Mount Tabor, West Columbia. This year's event is Saturday, August 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and is free to the public. Donations will be accepted for Sistercare. Paper products are being collected on their behalf. The event has 3 components: Brunch - Tasty morsels are provided for our guests. Browse - Our assembly room is turned into a market for local vendors to sell their wares. Faith - Time is set aside during the event, for our guests to gather together, and to listen to an inspirational guest speaker. This year's speaker is Stefanie Fuller, Minister of Worship Arts at Central Church of the Nazarene in West Columbia. For more information call 803-796-5948

No secrets here.
In her August column for The Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton says rumors and politics on three issues before the ELCA are at odds with true discernment. There are no schemes, she says, just time and space for a process of talking together, praying together and listening together as a church-time for discernment.

Aiken Confronts Racism
The murders in Charleston and subsequent burning of churches across the south serve as a reminder that though more covert in recent years the reality of racism are still prevalent in our society at least as we experience it in South Carolina.
The Glover Grove Phoenix Project is a response in our community to racism. Community leaders of Aiken have come together to assist and support the rebuilding of the Glover Grove Missionary Baptist Church in its time of need through a variety of community-based strategies. They have come together as community leaders and diverse congregations of faith to make a positive and lasting statement about the values of Aiken and its citizens.
The first opportunity that this group is offering to the community is a public worship and witness at 1st Baptist Church on August 9 at 4:00 pm. A program/prayer service will include speakers and a mass choir to give witness that Aiken intends to be a community together in the midst of our racial diversity.
