Thursday, June 19, 2014, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, headquartered in Baltimore, is celebrating 75 years of walking alongside refugees and migrants. It is the 2nd largest refugee resettlement agency in the United States. Find out more at lirs.org.

In honor of the U.N. World Refugee Day and in conjunction with the LIRS 75th anniversary week activities, LIRS in Baltimore will host 50 former refugees for a three-day advocacy training academy in Washington to provide strategies for interacting with members of Congress and local policy makers in an effort to influence the creation of U.S. policies that support successful refugee resettlement and immigration reform. The training will be conducted by past WRD Academy participants who are themselves former refugees. The group of 50 includes activists, members of the US military, advocates and community organizers from across the United States.

Time for a chuckle:

Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother Joel were sitting together in church. Joel giggled, sang, and talked out loud during the service. Finally, his big sister turned to him and said, "You're not supposed to talk out loud in church."  "Why? Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked indignantly.  Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, "See those two men standing by the door? They're hushers!"
